Chapter 6 - THE REDEMPTION BALL

On Thursday evening, the Caruso estate was illuminated by hundreds of golden lights shining through the gardens and grand hall.
Dozens of high-society figures, corporate executives, politicians, and prominent city figures arrived in luxury vehicles. The grand ballroom echoed with light classical music, glittering champagne glasses, and quiet, high-stakes conversations.
Grace stood before the long mirror in her suite, staring at her reflection in awe.
She wore a custom-made, emerald-green silk maternity gown that flowed gracefully over her curves to the floor. Her dark hair was styled in an elegant updo with soft tendrils framing her face, and a modest, glittering diamond pendant—a gift from Vincent’s private collection—rested against her collarbone.
A knock sounded on the door. Vincent stepped inside, dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo.
He stopped, taking in her appearance, a look of genuine admiration crossing his face. "Grace. You look extraordinary."
Grace felt her cheeks warm. "I feel like a princess in a fairytale. I keep waiting to wake up in my old apartment."
Vincent walked over, offering his arm to her. "This is not a fairytale, Grace. This is your life now. Ready?"
Grace took his arm, taking a deep breath. "Ready."
When Vincent and Grace walked down the grand marble staircase together into the ballroom, the room went completely silent.
Conversations died mid-sentence. Dozens of eyes turned to stare at the pregnant woman walking arm-in-arm with the most powerful man in Philadelphia. Rumors had been circulating for weeks about a young woman staying at the Caruso estate, but seeing her elevated to a place of honor beside Vincent was a statement no one could misunderstand.
Among the guests stood Julian Vance—a thickset man in his late fifties with cold, arrogant eyes—and beside him stood his brother, Senator Vance.
As Vincent and Grace stepped onto the main floor, Julian stepped forward, a patronizing smirk on his face.
"Vincent," Julian sneered quietly, holding a glass of scotch. "A lovely evening. Though I must admit, the rumors surprised me. We all wondered who the mystery woman was hiding in your estate. I didn't realize you were housing a former night-shift janitor from North Philly."
Subtle gasps echoed among the nearby guests. Several socialites covered their mouths.
Grace felt a sudden knot in her stomach, but she held her head high, refusing to show fear.
Vincent didn't flinch. He slowly turned his body toward Julian Vance, his grey eyes locking onto the man with lethal intensity.
"Julian," Vincent spoke, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet room. "You speak as though honest work is a flaw. Ms. Miller cleaned office buildings to support her unborn child with honor and dignity—virtues you haven't possessed a single day of your life."
Julian’s smirk vanished, replaced by a flush of red anger. "Caruso, you think you can disrespect me in front of—"
"I think you are standing in my home, insulting my guest," Vincent interrupted, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that chilled everyone listening. "Ms. Miller is Sarah Miller’s daughter. Her family holds my lifetime protection. If anyone in this room—or in this city— disrespects her again, they will answer directly to me, my legal team, and my associates."
Julian looked at the surrounding crowd, realizing that every powerful figure in the room was staring at him with contempt. Senator Vance quickly grabbed his brother’s arm, whispering fiercely in his ear to shut him up.
Vincent turned to Grace, his expression immediately softening into warmth. "May I have this dance, Grace?"
May you like
Grace smiled brightly, her heart swelling with gratitude. "I would love to, Vincent."
As the orchestra played a slow, beautiful waltz, Vincent guided Grace across the dance floor with gentle care, protecting her from the crowd, holding her close as everyone watched in silent awe. For the first time in her life, Grace felt completely cherished, valued, and safe.
