Chapter 7 - AN UNEXPECTED STORM

Three weeks later, as winter set in over Philadelphia, Grace reached her eighth month of pregnancy.

Her belly was round, her daughter was active, and her health was better than it had ever been. She spent her days designing the grand nursery on the ground floor of the estate, picking out cribs, plush blankets, and hand-painted wall murals with Mrs. Gable.

Vincent’s presence in her life had become an anchor. He brought her fresh flowers every evening, checked her medical charts, and talked to her unborn baby through her belly every night before bed, a quiet routine that filled Grace’s heart with an emotion she was almost afraid to name.

Then, on a stormy Friday afternoon, the past came knocking.

Grace was resting in the estate glass conservatory, watching the snow fall over the gardens, when Marco entered the room, looking unusually tense.

"Grace," Marco said cautiously. "There is someone at the front gate claiming he needs to see you immediately. He says he’s the father of your baby."

Grace’s tea cup froze halfway to her mouth. The blood drained from her face. "Derek?"

"His name is Derek Harris," Marco confirmed, his voice hard. "Our gate security held him at the outer perimeter. Do you want me to turn him away?"

Grace sat in stunned silence. Derek had abandoned her eleven days after she told him she was pregnant, leaving her with an unpaid lease and zero financial support. She hadn't heard a single word from him in seven months.

"Why is he here?" Grace whispered.

"He claims he wants to talk," Marco said. "Vincent is currently in a meeting downtown, but I can handle this—"

"No," Grace said, standing up slowly, her hands resting on her stomach. "I want to see him. At the gatehouse. I want to know why he’s here."

Five minutes later, Grace stood inside the heated glass gatehouse at the estate entrance, guarded by Marco and two armed security officers.

Derek Harris stood on the other side of the glass partition. He looked disheveled, wearing a worn leather jacket, his eyes wide as he took in the grand estate, the security guards, and Grace’s glowing, healthy appearance in her expensive winter coat.

"Grace!" Derek gasped, stepping forward, but Marco immediately stepped in front of him. "Grace, oh my God... look at you. Look at this place!"

"Why are you here, Derek?" Grace asked, her voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of the fear she used to feel around him.

Derek swallowed hard, putting on a weak, pleading smile. "Grace, I made a terrible mistake. I panicked back then... I was scared of being a father. But I've been searching for you for months! When I heard rumors that you were living in Chestnut Hill with some rich guy, I couldn't believe it—"

"You didn't search for me," Grace cut him off plainly. "You didn't care if I was starving, or if my baby was healthy. You ran away."

Derek’s expression shifted, a flicker of greed flashing in his eyes as he looked at her diamond pendant and expensive clothes. "Grace, we can be a family again! That baby is mine. You can't just stay here with some old mob boss! Come back with me. We can ask him for a settlement—a financial package for raising my kid—"

Grace stared at him in utter disgust. She finally understood. He hadn't come back out of remorse or love; he had heard rumors of her connection to Vincent Caruso and had come to extort money.

"Get out," Grace said quietly.

"Grace, listen to me—"

"Get out!" Grace said louder, her eyes flashing with fierce authority. "You are not a father. You are a coward. You abandoned us when we had nothing, and you don't get to claim us now that we are safe. Don't you ever come near me or my daughter again."

Before Derek could argue, the smooth sound of an engine echoed behind them. Vincent’s black sedan pulled through the gate, stopping abruptly.

Vincent stepped out of the vehicle, taking in the scene instantly. He walked over to Grace, placing a protective arm around her waist, his grey eyes turning to ice as he looked at Derek.

"Is this the man?" Vincent asked Marco softly.

"Yes, boss," Marco replied. "Derek Harris."

Vincent looked at Derek as if he were a bug beneath his shoe. "Mr. Harris. You have ten seconds to get off my property before my security team arrests you for trespassing and extortion."

Derek looked at Vincent’s terrifying frame, then at the four armed guards surrounding him. The arrogance instantly drained from his face. He backed away rapidly, tripped over his own feet in the snow, got into his old beat-up car, and sped away down the avenue.

Grace leaned against Vincent, shaking slightly with lingering adrenaline.

Vincent turned to her, pulling her close into his chest, holding her tight against the cold wind. "Are you okay?"

Grace looked up into his handsome, protective face, feeling a deep, absolute sense of peace. "I'm more than okay, Vincent. I'm finally free."
