Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Lake Forest

The Moretti estate in Lake Forest sat like an iron fortress on forty acres of pine forest along the edge of Lake Michigan.

Heavy wrought-iron gates, manned by twenty armed guards, swung open silently as the convoy of black SUVs swept up the long, winding brick driveway, pulling up before the grand limestone steps of the forty-room mansion.

Inside, the grand entrance hall was warm, lit by massive crystal chandeliers that cast a golden light over polished white marble floors.

Lily, still wrapped in Dante’s oversized charcoal overcoat, walked into the hall holding Clara’s hand tightly. Behind them, two private house nurses—hired by Marco via a emergency phone call twenty minutes earlier—gently took Leo and Toby, carrying the infants toward a fully equipped medical nursery on the second floor for warm baths and health evaluations.

"Where are they taking my brothers?" Clara demanded instantly, her hand instinctively reaching out toward the nurses as she stepped in front of Lily.

"To be examined by a board-certified pediatrician, Miss Vance," Dante said calmly, stepping out of his coat and handing it to his house manager. "They are hypothermic, malnourished, and require proper medical care. No one is going to harm them."

Clara turned her gaze back to Dante. Up close, in the warm light of the foyer, he was overwhelming. His features were dark, sharp, and regal, carrying the terrifying authority of a king who ruled an empire built on violence. Yet, his eyes held a strange, intense focus whenever he looked at her.

"Why are you doing this?" Clara asked, her voice quiet but steady. "Men like you don't save homeless families out of the goodness of their hearts. What did my father do?"

"Your father was Julian Vance," Dante said, gesturing toward the warm fireplace in the adjacent drawing room. "He was an honest architect who refused to launder money for Mario Vanzini. Vanzini burned your home to silence him."

Clara went pale, her fists clenching at her sides. "He murdered my parents..."

"Yes," Dante replied flatly. "And tonight, he sent his men to take you and your sister to settle a debt that never existed."

Lily tugged softly on Clara’s denim jacket. "Clara... the mister bought six cans of the blue formula. And he gave us coats."

Clara looked down at her little sister, then back at Dante. "How much do we owe you for the medicine and the coats? I... I don't have money right now, but I have a high school diploma. I can work. I'll clean this entire house every day until the debt is paid."

Dante walked over to a small mahogany side table, picked up a small crystal glass of dark scotch, and took a slow sip.

"Your sister already settled the initial payment," Dante said smoothly, looking at Lily with a faint glint of dark humor in his eyes.

Clara blinked, confused. "What?"

"She paid me a quarter," Dante said. "And she promised me that you would pay the rest when she grows up."

Clara turned her head to stare at Lily. Lily looked up at her sister proudly, nodding her small head in absolute agreement.

"I made a deal with him, Clara," Lily said solemnly. "He's our business partner now."

Clara let out a breath that was half-laugh, half-sob, covering her face with her trembling hands.

Dante stepped closer to Clara, his long shadow covering her fragile frame.

"You are safe here, Clara Vance," Dante said softly, his voice leaving no room for doubt. "Your brothers will be fed. Your sister will have a warm bed. And Vanzini will never touch a hair on your head again."

Clara lifted her face, meeting his dark obsidian gaze. "And what do you want in return, Don Moretti?"

May you like

Dante looked at her dark blue eyes, seeing the quiet, unbreakable strength hidden beneath her bruises.

"We will discuss my price in the morning," Dante replied quietly. "For tonight... rest."
