Chapter 5 - The Velvet Cage

Within forty-eight hours, the news of Dante Moretti’s sudden, unexpected engagement swept through the Chicago underworld like a tidal wave.

The high-society crime families were stunned into utter disbelief. Rumors flew through executive clubs and private waterfront lounges that the King of the Moretti Syndicate was marrying a nameless, penniless girl who had been pulled straight out of a burned-out tenement house.

Inside the estate, however, Clara’s life transformed at a dizzying, terrifying speed.

A team of high-end French tailors, jewelers, and stylists arrived at the mansion, transforming the second-floor master suite into a showroom of silk dresses, tailored wool coats, velvet gowns, and diamond jewelry.

Lily was enrolled in a prestigious private academy in Lake Forest, provided with a personal security escort, brand-new clothes, and a private tutor. Leo and Toby were assigned a dedicated team of pediatric nurses who monitored their health around the clock.

Yet, despite the sudden luxury, Clara felt like a bird trapped inside a gold-plated cage.

It was a Friday evening, four days before the wedding.

Clara stood in the grand fitting room, wearing an exquisite ivory silk wedding dress with a long, flowing lace train that cascaded across the Persian rug. Two seamstresses were kneeling at her feet, pinning the hemline.

The door opened, and Dante stepped into the room.

He stood near the doorway, holding a glass of scotch, his eyes slowly sweeping over her form. The rich ivory silk contrasted stunningly against her fair skin, framing her slender waist and elegant collarbones.

"Leave us," Dante commanded the seamstresses softly.

The women quickly gathered their pins and measuring tapes, bowing their heads as they hurried out of the room, closing the heavy doors behind them.

Clara looked at Dante in the full-length mirror. "It's considered bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her dress before the wedding."

"I don't believe in luck, Clara," Dante replied smoothly, stepping closer to her until his chest was just inches from her back. "I believe in results."

Clara turned around slowly, her silk dress rustling against the carpet. "Is everything ready for the ceremony?"

"The guest list includes two hundred capos, politicians, and syndicate bosses from four states," Dante said. "It will be the most heavily guarded event in this city's history."

Clara looked down at her small, pale hands, her knuckles tight. "They're going to look at me like I'm an imposter. A charity case."

Dante reached out, his broad hand coming up to gently cup her jaw, forcing her to look up into his fierce, unyielding gaze.

"They will look at you as my wife," Dante said, his deep voice vibrating through her chest. "And if anyone in that room dares to look at you with anything less than absolute reverence, I will make them answer to me."

Clara felt a strange, intoxicating heat rush through her veins. In the four days she had lived under his roof, Dante had treated her with absolute respect, never forcing himself upon her, never demanding anything more than her presence at his table. Yet, his fierce protection was beginning to stir something deep, unfamiliar, and powerful inside her heart.

"Why do you care so much about what they think of me?" Clara whispered, her breath brushing against his lips.

Dante’s thumb brushed softly across her bottom lip.

"Because you didn't break, Clara," Dante murmured softly. "I have watched hundred-pound mob bosses cry for mercy in my basement. But you stood in a freezing alley with bruises on your face and tried to fight three armed men to protect your sister."

He leaned in closer, his dark eyes burning with an intense, possessive flame.

"You are not a charity case, my sweet Clara," Dante whispered against her skin. "You are the strongest thing in this entire city."

Before Clara could answer, a frantic knock sounded at the door.

Marco stepped into the room, his face pale, holding a secure satellite telephone.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice tight with panic. "We have a massive situation. Mario Vanzini just seized the western harbor shipping docks... and he has issued a public challenge to your authority."
