Chapter 6 - The Shadow on the Docks

The atmosphere inside the estate study instantly turned into a war room.
Dante stood behind his desk, wearing a black tactical shirt, surrounded by six of his senior captains. Tactical maps of the Chicago waterfront were spread across the mahogany wood, highlighted with glowing red tactical markers.
"Vanzini brought in eighty mercenaries from Detroit," Marco reported, pointing at the terminal map. "They took over Warehouse 14 on the Navy Pier. They've hijacked three of our primary shipping containers filled with thirty million dollars in pharmaceutical imports."
"What does Vanzini want?" Capo Santino asked, slamming his fist onto the table. "He knows a direct attack on Moretti territory means total war!"
"He wants the girl," Marco said softly, looking toward the door.
Dante’s head snapped up, his eyes narrowing into cold, lethal slits. "Speak."
"Vanzini sent a radio message through the port authority," Marco explained nervously. "He claims Julian Vance stole five million dollars from his private account before his death. He says he will burn Warehouse 14 and release the pharmaceutical imports to the federal authorities unless Don Moretti hands over Clara Vance by midnight tonight."
A collective murmur of outrage swept through the captains.
"The bastard is trying to humiliate you before the wedding, Boss!" Santino growled. "If you hand her over, you look weak to the council. If you refuse, you lose thirty million dollars in stock!"
Dante didn't answer. He stood motionless, staring at the satellite map of Warehouse 14.
The library door pushed open quietly.
Clara stepped into the room, wearing a dark wool sweater and trousers, her face pale but her eyes entirely clear and resolute. She had heard every word from the hallway.
The captains immediately fell silent, bowing their heads respectfully as she walked into the center of the room.
"Dante," Clara said, her voice cutting through the tense air like a crystal blade.
Dante looked at her, his expression instantly softening into a protective mask. "Clara, go back to your quarters. This is business."
"My father didn't steal five million dollars," Clara declared, walking straight up to the desk. "My father was an architect who designed the structural renovations for Warehouse 14 three years ago!"
Dante’s brows pulled together in sharp interest. "What did you say?"
"My father kept duplicate blue prints of every commercial project he ever built in a fireproof safe in our basement," Clara explained rapidly. "Before the fire destroyed our house, I saw those blue prints. Warehouse 14 doesn't just have standard storage floors. It has an underground drainage tunnel that connects directly to the old water filtration facility under 6th Street!"
The captains exchanged wide, incredulous glances.
Marco quickly brought up the structural archives on his tablet, zooming in on the historical drainage maps of Navy Pier. "She's right, Boss! There's an unmapped sub-basement access corridor beneath the south floor!"
Dante looked at Clara, a slow, dark, magnificent smile spreading across his face.
"Vanzini thinks he has trapped me in a political dilemma," Dante said smoothly, his voice laced with absolute, terrifying confidence. "He thinks I am going to negotiate for my bride."

He walked around the desk, reaching out to take Clara’s hand, bringing her knuckles to his lips for a slow, lingering kiss.
"Marco," Dante commanded, his eyes never leaving Clara’s face. "Assemble the strike team. We are going to show Mario Vanzini what happens when you touch something that belongs to the King."
