Chapter 9 - The Ledger of the Heart

By midnight, the grand wedding reception at the Lake Forest estate was drawing to a peaceful close.

The last of the executive cars were driving down the long, tree-lined driveway, leaving the estate wrapped in a quiet, golden serenity under the clear, starry night sky.

Upstairs in the second-floor nursery, Lily, Leo, and Toby were fast asleep in their soft, custom wood cribs, guarded by two discrete officers stationed in the hallway.

In the master suite, a fire crackled brightly in the stone fireplace, casting an orange glow across the velvet furniture and the grand four-poster bed.

Clara stood near the balcony glass doors, wearing a soft silk dressing gown, looking out at the dark waters of Lake Michigan.

The heavy door opened, and Dante walked into the room.

He had removed his tuxedo jacket and tie, unbuttoning his top two collar buttons, his sleeves rolled up his forearms as he carried two glasses of sparkling vintage wine.

He walked over and handed one glass to Clara, stepping up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist, resting his chin gently against her shoulder.

"Are the children asleep?" Clara asked softly, leaning back against his broad, warm chest.

"All three of them," Dante replied, his voice a dark, velvet murmur against her skin. "Lily insisted on sleeping with her new leather boots beside her pillow."

Clara let out a quiet, beautiful laugh, turning around in his arms to look up into his face. "She still thinks she has to be ready to run."

"She will never have to run again, Clara," Dante said firmly, his eyes locking onto hers. "Neither will you."

Clara reached up, her fingers gently tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "When you caught that baby in the supermarket six days ago... did you know you were going to change our lives like this?"

Dante smiled—a slow, genuine, breathtaking curve of his lips.

"I caught that baby because your sister looked like she was carrying the weight of the entire world on her eight-year-old shoulders," Dante confessed softly. "And when she told me she would pay me back when she grew up... I realized I had found the only real family I had ever wanted."

He pulled a small velvet box from his trousers pocket and set it in her palm.

Clara opened the box.

Inside, rested on a bed of dark blue silk, lay the dirty, tarnished quarter that Lily had handed Dante in the supermarket six days ago. But now, it was mounted on a delicate, hand-crafted platinum necklace frame.

"A gift for our anniversary every year," Dante whispered, taking the necklace out and gently fastening it around Clara’s neck. "To remind us of where we started."

Clara touched the cool metal resting against her collarbone, tears of pure, overwhelming happiness glistening in her dark blue eyes.

May you like

"I love you, Dante Moretti," Clara whispered, stepping close to kiss him.

"And I love you, my Queen," Dante replied, gathering her up into his arms as the firelight danced across the walls.
