Chapter 4 - The Terms of the Empire

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the blizzard had cleared, leaving the estate wrapped in a blanket of sparkling white snow.
Clara stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate library on the second floor. She wore a soft, comfortable cream wool sweater and trousers provided by the house staff, her wet hair washed and dried, her bruises treated with soothing medical creams.
In the adjacent sunroom, Lily was sitting at a low wooden table eating a hot breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, and fresh fruit, while a nurse fed Leo and Toby warm formula bottles nearby. For the first time in six months, the infants were completely quiet, resting peacefully in soft cashmere swaddles.
The heavy mahogany doors of the library opened.
Dante stepped into the room, wearing a custom charcoal three-piece suit without a tie, carrying a thin leather-bound portfolio.
He walked over to his desk, sitting down in his high-backed leather chair, gesturing for Clara to take the seat across from him.
Clara didn't sit. She walked over to the desk, placing her hands flat on the polished mahogany surface.
"I checked the legal news on the computer in the guest room this morning," Clara said, her voice crisp and clear. "Mario Vanzini is the leader of the largest criminal organization on the West Side. He has fifty armed men and corrupt police captains on his payroll. Protecting my family puts you in direct conflict with his entire network."
Dante leaned back in his chair, folding his long fingers together. "Vanzini is a rat who built his empire on extortion and arson. I have been looking for a reason to crush his network for three years."
"That still doesn't explain why you brought us into your personal home," Clara pressed. "A man like you doesn't offer sanctuary to three orphans and a nineteen-year-old girl without a calculated reason."
Dante looked at her for three long seconds. A thin, approving curve touched his lips.
"You are quick, Clara," Dante said smoothly. "Very well. Here are the facts."
He opened the leather portfolio on his desk, sliding a single white legal document toward her.
"My father established the Moretti Syndicate forty years ago," Dante explained, his voice flat and analytical. "According to the terms of the family charter, the reigning Don must be married by his fortieth birthday in order to maintain absolute control of the syndicate's assets and board votes. My fortieth birthday is in three weeks."
Clara stared at the document. "You need a wife."
"I need a wife who cannot be bought by my rivals," Dante corrected her coldly. "I need a woman with an unbreakable spirit, a woman who understands loyalty, and a woman who has no ties to the traitorous high-society mob families in this city who wish to see me fall."
Clara felt her breath catch in her throat. "You want to marry me."
"I am proposing a legal arrangement," Dante stated, leaning forward over the desk. "You will become my wife. You will carry the title of Mistress of the Moretti Syndicate. In return, I will legally adopt your sister and your twin brothers, granting them full protection, infinite financial security, access to the finest private schools in the country, and a permanent home on this estate."
Clara’s heart hammered furiously against her ribs. "And if I say no?"
"If you say no," Dante said softly, "I will give you ten thousand dollars in cash, a secure apartment in Denver, and wish you good luck. But Vanzini's men will find you within a month, and social services will take those infants the moment you enter a public shelter."
Clara looked out the glass doors toward the sunroom.
She saw Lily laughing as she showed a drawing to the house nurse. She saw her baby brothers resting peacefully under warm blankets, their small cheeks pink and full.
She remembered the freezing alleyway, the smell of smoke, the sound of gunshots, and the terrifying realization that she was completely alone in a cruel world.
Clara turned her head back to Dante Moretti.
"What are the rules of this marriage?" Clara asked, her voice steady despite the trembling in her hands.
Dante stood up from his desk, walking around the wood until he stood directly in front of her. He reached out, his long fingers gently picking up a strand of her golden hair, tucking it behind her ear.
"You will live in this house as my queen," Dante whispered, his obsidian eyes burning into hers. "You will be respected by every man who wears my crest. In public, you will be my devoted wife. In private, your quarters will be entirely your own until you decide otherwise."
"And the debt?" Clara asked softly. "The quarter Lily gave you?"
Dante pulled the tarnished, dirty coin from his pocket, holding it between his thumb and forefinger.
"This quarter stays in my desk drawer," Dante said, a dark, velvet warmth filling his voice. "Consider it the down payment on an empire."
May you like
Clara looked at the coin, then up into the eyes of the most dangerous man in Chicago.
"I accept your terms, Don Moretti," Clara said. "Save my family."
