PART 2: THE MAN WHO CAME BACK

PART 2: THE MAN WHO CAME BACK
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The waves crashed below the cliff.
The wind screamed through the empty road.
But all Eleanor could hear was one thing.
Her son's voice.
Daniel.
Alive.
Standing in front of her.
The same son she buried six months ago.
The same son whose funeral she attended while holding his photograph and crying until she could no longer speak.
Her lips trembled.
“Daniel…”
The man looked at her.
His eyes softened.
“Mom.”
That one word destroyed her.
Tears rolled down Eleanor’s face.
She reached toward him.
But she was too weak.
Daniel immediately walked forward and knelt beside her wheelchair.
He held her hands.
“I’m sorry.”
Eleanor stared at him.
“You’re alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
A painful silence followed.
Because the answer was not simple.
Victoria stood several steps away.
Frozen.
Her mind was racing.
This was impossible.
She had seen the accident reports.
She had seen the destroyed car.
She had seen the hospital documents.
Daniel was supposed to be dead.
“You…”
Her voice shook.
“You were dead.”
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“No.”
Victoria stepped back.
“Everyone said you died.”
Daniel’s expression became cold.
“Everyone believed what you wanted them to believe.”
Victoria’s face changed.
“What are you saying?”
Daniel stood.
“You really thought you could hide everything?”
The woman who had been so confident minutes earlier suddenly looked smaller.
Afraid.
Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out his phone.
“I recorded everything.”
Victoria’s breathing stopped.
“What?”
He pressed a button.
A recording began playing.
Victoria’s own voice.
Clear.
Cold.
“Because from today…the house will finally belong only to me.”
The sound echoed across the cliff.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
She had hoped she misunderstood.
She had hoped there was still a piece of the woman she loved.
But there was none.
Victoria looked at Daniel.
“You planned this.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“From the beginning.”
Her anger returned.
“You followed me?”
“I investigated.”
“After the accident?”
Daniel looked at her.
“There was no accident.”
Silence.
Eleanor looked confused.
“No accident?”
Daniel turned to her.
“Mom, the crash was staged.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
Victoria’s face went pale.
Daniel continued:
“Six months ago, I discovered money was missing from the company accounts.”
Victoria said nothing.
“I thought it was an employee.”
“Then I found hidden transfers.”
“To offshore accounts.”
His eyes moved toward his wife.
“All connected to Victoria.”
Eleanor stared at her daughter-in-law.
“No…”
Victoria looked away.
Daniel continued.
“When I confronted her, she admitted it.”
Victoria suddenly shouted:
“You left me no choice!”
Everyone froze.
Daniel stared.
“What?”
Her face twisted with anger.
“You think I wanted this?”
“You think I enjoyed begging for money while your mother controlled everything?”
Eleanor looked hurt.
“Victoria…”
“No!”
The younger woman screamed.
“You always looked at me like I wasn’t good enough.”
“I was never a Whitmore.”
“I was always the outsider.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn’t justify stealing.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“Stealing?”
She pointed toward Eleanor.
“What about her?”
“She had everything.”
“The house.”
“The money.”
“The respect.”
“And she never even had to fight for it.”
Eleanor whispered:
“I would have helped you.”
Victoria looked at her.
“You still don’t understand.”
Her voice became quiet.
“I didn’t want help.”
“I wanted power.”
The honesty was terrifying.
Daniel took a step forward.
“You pushed my mother toward a cliff.”
Victoria looked at him.
“I didn’t do it.”
The words came quickly.
Too quickly.
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
Victoria realized her mistake.
She tried to recover.
“I mean…”
“You don’t have proof.”
Daniel smiled.
A sad smile.
“I have everything.”
He showed his phone.
“The confession.”
“The location tracking.”
“The messages between you and the lawyer.”
Victoria stared.
Her face changed.
“You recorded me?”
Daniel nodded.
“I knew you would try something.”
Victoria’s anger turned into fear.
“What happens now?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Now you answer for what you did.”
A police siren suddenly appeared in the distance.
Victoria looked toward the road.
“You called them?”
“Yes.”
The police cars approached.
Victoria’s eyes moved toward the cliff.
Then toward the road.
She realized.
There was nowhere to run.
As officers stepped out, Eleanor looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
The question was soft.
Painful.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I wanted to.”
“Then why?”
“Because if Victoria knew I survived…”
He looked at his mother.
“She would hurt you sooner.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“You let me think I lost my son.”
Daniel looked away.
“I’m sorry.”
She touched his face.
“You should have trusted me.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
For a moment, mother and son said nothing.
Because even though Daniel had saved her…
A wound remained.
A wound caused by fear.
The police arrested Victoria.
As she was taken away, she looked back at Eleanor.
Not with regret.
With anger.
“You think you won.”
Eleanor stared at her.
Victoria smiled coldly.
“But you don’t know the truth.”
Daniel frowned.
“What truth?”
Victoria laughed.
“The person who helped me…”
She looked directly at Daniel.
“Was someone you trust.”
The smile disappeared from Daniel’s face.
“What?”
But Victoria only said:
“Ask your mother.”
Then she was taken away.
The road became silent again.
Daniel turned slowly toward Eleanor.
His expression changed.
“Mom.”
Eleanor looked nervous.
“Daniel…”
“What did she mean?”
The old woman looked down.
The wind moved through her hair.
And for the first time that night…
Daniel saw fear in his mother’s eyes.
Not fear of the cliff.
Fear of a secret.
“Mom.”
He stepped closer.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Eleanor’s hands trembled.
Because the truth she buried for years…
Was finally coming back.
And it was more dangerous than Victoria.
She whispered:
“Your father.”
Daniel froze.
“My father?”
Eleanor nodded.
“He didn’t die the way I told you.”
The world seemed to stop.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
Eleanor looked toward the dark ocean.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your father is alive.”
