PART 4: THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS

PART 4: THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS

Daniel stared at the signature.

Again.

And again.

His hands became cold.

The name on the paper felt impossible.

“Brother?”

His voice was barely audible.

He looked at Eleanor.

“Mom.”

The old woman closed her eyes.

She knew.

She had known this moment would come.

“What is this?”

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Daniel lifted the paper.

“What is this?”

His voice became louder.

“Who is he?”

Richard stood silently.

But Eleanor’s silence was louder than anything.

Finally, she whispered:

“His name is Lucas.”

Daniel froze.

“Lucas?”

Eleanor nodded.

“You had a brother.”

The world stopped.

Daniel looked at Richard.

Then back at his mother.

“No.”

“There is no way.”

“You told me I was an only child.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“How long have you lied to me?”

She couldn’t answer.

“Mom!”

Her shoulders shook.

“Your entire life.”

Daniel stepped back.

He felt dizzy.

Another secret.

Another person erased.

First his father.

Now a brother.

How many pieces of his own life had been hidden from him?

“Why?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Because your father made a mistake.”

Richard’s expression darkened.

“Don’t put this all on me.”

Eleanor turned toward him.

“You left.”

“You disappeared.”

“You abandoned your family.”

Richard looked away.

The anger in his eyes softened.

Then he said quietly:

“I thought I was protecting them.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

He looked at both of them.

“Protecting.”

“Saving.”

“Helping.”

“But somehow everyone destroys me.”

The pain in his voice silenced them.

Then Daniel looked at the papers again.

“Lucas.”

He pointed at the signature.

“My brother tried to kill Mom?”

Richard shook his head.

“Not directly.”

“Then what?”

“He wanted the inheritance.”

Daniel frowned.

“What inheritance?”

Eleanor looked nervous.

Richard continued.

“Your grandfather created a trust.”

“A massive one.”

“Passed down through bloodline.”

Daniel stared.

“Money.”

“All of this…”

He looked toward the cliff.

“Victoria.”

“The fake accident.”

“The lies.”

“All because of money?”

Richard nodded.

“Lucas believed you were the only thing standing between him and everything.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I never even knew he existed.”

Richard’s face became serious.

“That’s why.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What?”

“He spent his entire life believing you stole his place.”

The words hit.

Daniel remembered Victoria.

Her anger.

Her jealousy.

Her need for power.

The same pattern.

People who felt forgotten.

People who believed they deserved more.

But nothing justified murder.

Suddenly, one of the police officers interrupted.

“Mr. Whitmore.”

Everyone turned.

“We found something in Mrs. Whitmore’s car.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What?”

The officer handed him a small envelope.

“No name.”

“Just this.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A young boy.

About eight years old.

Standing beside Eleanor.

On the back was one sentence.

YOU TOOK HIM FROM ME.

Daniel stared.

“Lucas.”

Richard nodded.

“He kept this all these years.”

Eleanor touched the photo.

Her hands shook.

“I never wanted him to hate you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why?”

She cried.

“Because Lucas was sick.”

Daniel frowned.

“Sick?”

“Not physically.”

Eleanor swallowed.

“He became obsessed.”

“With revenge.”

“With proving he was the real heir.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

“And you just left him?”

Richard’s face changed.

Regret.

“Yes.”

The answer surprised everyone.

“I thought distance would make him forget.”

Daniel shook his head.

“And it didn’t.”

“No.”

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from the abandoned car near the cliff.

An old phone inside.

Daniel walked toward it.

“Don’t.”

Eleanor warned.

But he picked it up.

A voice came through.

A man.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

“Lucas?”

A small laugh.

“So you finally know my name.”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“Somewhere you should have been years ago.”

Daniel tightened his grip.

“What do you want?”

The voice answered:

“What I always wanted.”

A pause.

“To be seen.”

Daniel frowned.

“This isn’t the way.”

Lucas laughed.

“Easy for you to say.”

“You had everything.”

“I had nothing.”

Daniel looked around.

“Where is Victoria?”

Another pause.

Then Lucas said:

“She failed.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Did you hurt her?”

“No.”

A colder tone.

“She was never important.”

The words made Daniel understand.

Victoria was just a tool.

Like Richard said.

Like everyone was.

“What about my mother?”

Lucas answered:

“She’s next.”

Daniel’s body went still.

The phone almost slipped from his hand.

“Don’t touch her.”

For the first time, his voice showed fear.

Lucas noticed.

And smiled.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The thing I never had.”

Daniel said nothing.

Lucas continued:

“You care about them.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Where are you?”

A long silence.

Then Lucas whispered:

“Come to the old Whitmore mansion.”

Daniel froze.

The family home.

The house where everything began.

“Why?”

Lucas answered:

“Because that’s where the truth died.”

The call ended.

Daniel immediately turned.

“We’re going.”

The police officer stopped him.

“It could be a trap.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I know.”

Richard stepped forward.

“I’m coming too.”

Daniel looked at him.

After everything…

He still didn’t trust him.

But he saw something in his father’s eyes.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For his family.

“Fine.”

Eleanor looked at her son.

“Daniel, please.”

He took her hand.

“I’m ending this.”

Then he looked toward the dark road.

The same road where Victoria almost killed his mother.

The same road where his family’s secrets started.

“Tonight.”

“No more lies.”

The old Whitmore mansion waited in the distance.

May you like

And inside it…

Lucas was waiting.
