PART 3: THE SECRET OF THE DEAD MAN

PART 3: THE SECRET OF THE DEAD MAN
Daniel stared at his mother.
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
“My father is alive?”
Eleanor looked away.
The silence was her answer.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.”
His voice became quieter.
“No, Mom.”
“You told me he died.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“You took me to his funeral.”
“I know.”
“You watched me bury him.”
“I know.”
Every answer made it worse.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Then explain.”
Eleanor looked at her son.
The child she protected.
The man she almost lost.
And she knew she could no longer hide.
“Your father was not a good man.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“What does that mean?”
“It means…”
She struggled to speak.
“It means I lied to protect you.”
Daniel looked toward the empty road.
All his life, he believed his father was gone.
A man who abandoned them.
A man whose death left Eleanor broken.
But now…
Everything was changing.
“Where is he?”
Eleanor hesitated.
Daniel noticed.
“Where is he, Mom?”
She whispered:
“He disappeared.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“He ran.”
“From what?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“From the police.”
The air became colder.
Daniel stared.
“My father was a criminal?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want you to know.”
“So you lied?”
“I wanted you to have a normal life.”
Daniel laughed.
A painful laugh.
“Normal?”
He pointed toward the cliff.
“Tonight my wife tried to kill you.”
“And now I find out my dead father is alive.”
“Nothing about my life is normal.”
Eleanor lowered her head.
“You’re right.”
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time, he saw not just his mother.
He saw a woman who had spent years carrying a secret.
“What did he do?”
Eleanor stayed silent.
“Mom.”
Her voice broke.
“He hurt people.”
Daniel froze.
“How many?”
She couldn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel looked away.
Then he remembered something.
Victoria’s final words.
The person who helped me was someone you trust.
His expression changed.
“Was Victoria talking about him?”
Eleanor looked up.
“What?”
“My father.”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Daniel noticed.
“You’re lying.”
Eleanor looked afraid.
“Daniel…”
“You’re still protecting someone.”
The old woman’s eyes filled.
“I’m protecting you.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You’re protecting the past.”
Before Eleanor could respond, headlights appeared behind them.
Another car.
Both turned.
A black vehicle stopped near the police cars.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Tall.
Wearing a dark coat.
Daniel froze.
Because even after twenty years…
He recognized him.
The face from old photographs.
The face he thought he would never see.
His father.
Richard Whitmore.
Alive.
Daniel’s breathing stopped.
Eleanor whispered:
“Richard…”
The man looked at them.
And smiled.
“Hello, Eleanor.”
The police immediately reached for their weapons.
But Richard raised his hands.
“I’m not here to fight.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You.”
Richard looked at him.
His expression softened.
“Daniel.”
Hearing his name from his father’s mouth made something inside him break.
“Don’t.”
Richard stopped.
“You’re dead.”
Richard nodded slowly.
“I know.”
Daniel’s voice shook.
“Everyone thought you were dead.”
“I needed them to.”
“Why?”
Richard looked at Eleanor.
“Because your mother made sure I disappeared.”
Daniel turned toward Eleanor.
His mother looked devastated.
“Mom?”
Richard continued:
“She told you I died.”
“Because she wanted you to hate me.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
“That’s not true.”
Richard looked at her.
“Isn’t it?”
Daniel looked between them.
“What happened?”
Neither spoke.
Then Richard said:
“Your mother betrayed me.”
Eleanor immediately replied:
“You betrayed all of us first.”
The words hit.
Daniel looked at his father.
“What did you do?”
Richard was silent.
A long silence.
Then:
“I made mistakes.”
Daniel laughed.
“Everyone says that.”
Richard looked at him.
“I lost everything.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“You chose greed.”
Richard’s expression became cold.
“You chose to take my son away.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Eleanor looked at him.
Her face filled with guilt.
Richard continued:
“She hid you from me.”
“She told you I abandoned you.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
“Is that true?”
Eleanor couldn’t speak.
And again…
Silence became the answer.
Daniel felt betrayed.
Not by one person.
By everyone.
“My whole life…”
His voice cracked.
“My whole life was built on lies.”
Eleanor cried.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From who?”
Daniel looked at her.
“From him?”
He pointed at Richard.
“Or from the truth?”
Nobody answered.
Then Richard stepped forward.
“I came back because I found something.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Richard reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folder.
A file.
“I found out Victoria was planning to take the inheritance.”
Daniel frowned.
“How?”
Richard looked at him.
“Because someone hired her.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?”
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were bank records.
Messages.
Photographs.
Daniel took the papers.
The name appeared.
The person behind everything.
Daniel’s hands shook.
“No.”
Eleanor looked.
And her face turned white.
Because she recognized the name too.
Richard whispered:
“This entire thing wasn’t Victoria’s plan.”
“She was only a piece.”
Daniel stared at the documents.
The real person who planned the murder.
The real person who wanted the Whitmore fortune.
Was someone much closer.
Someone nobody suspected.
The final page revealed a signature.
Daniel read it.
Then froze.
Because the person who approved everything…
May you like
Was his own brother.
A brother he never knew existed.
