Chapter 2 - The Three Shadows

The heavy oak front door didn't knock. It shuddered as it was thrown wide open, slamming against the interior drywall with a sound like a gunshot.
Ethan spun around, drawing Lauren behind him out of instinct. "What the hell—"
Three men stepped into the foyer. They walked with the deliberate, heavy grace of predators who owned every room they ever entered. All three were over six feet tall, dressed in tailored dark suits, their faces carved from stone and cold rage.
The eldest walked in front. Marcus Vance. Forty-two years old, built like a linebacker, with steel-gray eyes that had made Fortune 500 CEOs break down in tears during hostile takeovers. To his right was Julian Vance, thirty-eight, a former marine intelligence officer turned chief security director for global logistics empires, whose knuckles were scarred and whose gaze calculated every exit in the room in two seconds flat. To his left was Gabriel Vance, thirty-four, the brilliant, ruthless legal architect whose courtroom maneuvers had dismantled billion-dollar cartels.
Ethan froze. His blood ran instantly cold.
He knew these names. Anyone who operated in high-end real estate, global shipping, or state politics in the Southeast knew the Vance family. They were old money, old power, and utterly untouchable.
"Who the hell are you people?" Lauren demanded, trying to sound authoritative despite the tremor in her voice. "This is private property! I'm calling the police!"
Julian didn't even look at her. He reached into his coat, pulled out a small black device, and pressed a button. A low frequency hum vibrated through the room as all cell signals inside the house instantly dropped to zero.
Marcus stepped into the dining room. His boots made no sound against the Persian rug. His eyes swept over the candlelit table, the untouched tenderloin, the red mark on Grace's cheek, and finally settled on Ethan.
"Grace," Marcus said, his voice a low, thunderous rumble that vibrated in the floorboards. "Which one touch you?"
Ethan blinked, looking between the giant standing before him and his quiet, unassuming wife. "Wait... Grace? What is this? Grace, who are these men?"
Grace slowly lowered her hand from her face. She looked at her eldest brother. "The one in the linen shirt, Marcus."
Julian moved so fast Ethan didn't even see him cross the floor.
Before Ethan could raise his arm, Julian's hand clamped around Ethan's throat like an iron vise, lifting his two-hundred-pound frame off his feet and slamming him violently against the brick fireplace mantel. Decorative crystal shattered onto the hearth.
"Ethan!" Lauren screamed, retreating toward the kitchen island, her face drained of color.
Ethan clawed desperately at Julian's fingers, his legs kicking uselessly in the air as his airway closed. "Can't... breathe..." he choked out, his eyes bulging with terror.
"Julian," Marcus said softly.
Julian released him. Ethan crumpled onto the floor in a heap, coughing violently, gasping for air as he clutched his bruised throat.
Gabriel stepped past Ethan without giving him a second glance, walking straight to Grace. His hard, razor-sharp face softened instantly. He reached out with terrifying gentleness, his thumb brushing just beside the red bruise on her cheek.
"Are you hurt anywhere else, Gracie?" Gabriel asked, his voice dripping with protective warmth.
"No, Gabe," Grace whispered. "Just my cheek."
Gabriel's eyes flicked down to her hand, which was still resting protectively over her stomach. His sharp blue eyes narrowed slightly. "Are you sure?"
"I'm sure," she said, her voice steadying. "The baby is fine."
At the word baby, the air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.
Ethan, still gasping on the floor, looked up in shock. "Baby? What... what are you talking about? Grace, you're not pregnant..."
Gabriel turned around slowly, looking down at Ethan as if he were a insect beneath his Italian leather shoes. "She is seventeen weeks pregnant, you pathetic piece of trash."
"I... I didn't know!" Ethan stammered, terror flooding his chest as he looked at the three massive men surrounding him. "I swear to God, I didn't know!"
"You didn't know because you were too busy taking your mistress to business dinners on my sister's dime," Marcus said, stepping forward. He reached into his jacket, pulled out a crisp linen handkerchief, and handed it to Grace. "Dry your cheek, sweetheart."
Lauren, standing wide-eyed near the kitchen island, tried to regain her footing. "Do you have any idea who I am? I'm Lauren Pierce! My father is—"
Marcus didn't even turn his head. "Your father is Richard Pierce. He owns twenty-two percent of Pierce Commercial Development, which currently owes forty-five million dollars to Vance Capital on a high-yield loan due in ninety days." Marcus finally looked at her, his steel-gray eyes utterly devoid of emotion. "If you open your mouth again in my sister's presence, I will call my asset recovery team and bankrupt your father before breakfast tomorrow."
Lauren's mouth snapped shut. She backed up until her hips hit the marble counter, trembling uncontrollably.
"Now," Marcus said, turning back to Ethan, who was cowering against the hearth. "Ethan Walker. Five years ago, you stood in a church in Charleston and swore to my father that you would cherish, honor, and protect our sister. Do you remember what I told you in the back room before you walked out to the altar?"
May you like
Ethan swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "You... you said..."
"I told you that Grace was the light of our family," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "I told you that she chose you over men who could have given her empires, because she believed you had a good heart. And I told you that if you ever laid a hand on her, there is no corner of this earth far enough for you to hide."
