Chapter 9 - A Chance Encounter

Two years later.

In downtown Charlotte, the annual Vance Foundation Gala was taking place at the Mint Museum. The grand marble hall was filled with hundreds of the city's most prominent leaders, philanthropists, and business executives.

Grace stepped out onto the front steps of the museum, looking stunning in a floor-length emerald green silk gown. Her hair was styled in soft waves, her skin glowing, a brilliant diamond necklace resting against her collarbone. She was now the President of the Vance Charitable Foundation, managing a two-hundred-million-dollar endowment dedicated to maternal healthcare and child advocacy.

As she waited for her driver to pull the car around, she noticed a man standing near the delivery entrance of the museum, holding a broom and a trash barrel.

He was wearing a stained, dark blue maintenance uniform. His hair was thin, his face lined with premature age and exhaustion, his shoulders hunched as if carrying an unbearable weight.

It was Ethan.

Grace stopped, her eyes meeting his across the paved courtyard.

Ethan froze, the broom slipping slightly in his hands. He stared at her—at the stunning, powerful, radiant woman standing on the marble steps, surrounded by security guards and luxury vehicles.

For a long moment, neither of them said a word.

Ethan took a hesitant step forward, his voice cracking as he whispered, "Grace..."

Before he could take another step, Julian Vance stepped out of the museum doors, placing a warm coat over Grace's shoulders. Julian's sharp eyes flicked toward Ethan, cold and completely impassive.

Grace looked at Ethan one last time. There was no anger in her eyes. No vengeance. No hatred.

There was only nothing.

She turned her back on him, took her brother's arm, and walked down the steps toward the waiting black limousine.

Ethan stood alone under the streetlights, clutching his broom, watching the red taillights of the limousine vanish into the gleaming city night—realizing, with absolute, terrifying certainty, that he had thrown away an empire for a illusion, and that the woman he had struck would never look back again.
