Chapter 3 - The True Heir

Ethan stared up at Marcus, the blood draining completely from his face as the pieces began to lock together in his terrified mind.

"Vance..." Ethan whispered, his breath catching in his throat. "Vance Capital... Marcus Vance... Julian Vance... Gabriel Vance..." He looked at Grace, his eyes wide with absolute horror. "Grace... your maiden name... you said your father was a high school teacher..."

"My father was a high school teacher," Grace said calmly, standing tall beside Gabriel. "He taught history for thirty years because he loved it. But his father was Arthur Vance, the founder of Vance Enterprises. My family chose to live simply, Ethan. I chose to live simply. I wanted a life built on real love, not status."

Ethan's mind raced back through five years of marriage.

He remembered the time his company needed a five-hundred-thousand-dollar bridge loan, and an anonymous angel investor had granted it within two hours at zero interest. He remembered how the city zoning board had suddenly approved his controversial Southgate residential permit after two years of bureaucracy. He remembered how major subcontractors always gave him priority pricing, assuming he was just a shrewd negotiator.

It hadn't been him. It had never been him.

"You..." Ethan breathed, staring at Grace as if seeing a total stranger. "You were the one... all these years..."

"She kept us from destroying you three years ago when we found out you were over-leveraging your business to buy luxury cars," Julian spat, leaning down until his nose was inches from Ethan's face. "She begged us to let you build your own success. She protected you from us, Walker. And this is how you repay her?"

Lauren looked at Ethan, her shock turning into sharp, venomous panic. "Ethan! What is he talking about? You told me you built Walker Development from scratch! You told me your wife was a penniless nobody who lived off your success!"

"Shut up, Lauren!" Ethan yelled desperate, pulling himself up onto his knees. "Grace... Grace, please! Look at me! I made a mistake! I was stressed about the Southgate project, I was drinking, I wasn't thinking straight!"

He crawled toward her on the rug, reaching out to grab the hem of her dress. "Grace, please! We're having a baby! We can fix this! I'll fire Lauren tonight! I'll never see her again!"

Before his hands could touch Grace's dress, Gabriel stepped forward, his polished shoe catching Ethan firmly in the chest and shoving him flat onto his back.

"Don't touch her," Gabriel said, pulling a fountain pen and a slim leather folder from his inner jacket pocket. "You don't get to speak to her about family ever again."

Gabriel opened the folder and threw it onto Ethan's chest.

"What... what is this?" Ethan stammered, looking at the legal documents.

"That is a complete, unconditional surrender of all assets," Gabriel said with surgical precision. "You will sign over the deed to this house, every share of Walker Development, every bank account, and every piece of property currently listed in your name. You will relinquish all parental rights to the child Grace is carrying, and you will agree to a immediate dissolution of marriage on the grounds of severe domestic abuse and marital infidelity."

Ethan blinked, horrified. "Sign over Walker Development?! That's my company! I built it! It's worth thirty million dollars!"

"Correction," Gabriel said coldly. "Walker Development is currently ninety-two percent leveraged by debts holding cross-collateral guarantees with regional banks that Vance Capital acquired at 4:00 p.m. today. If you do not sign that paper in the next three minutes, I will execute those guarantees by midnight. You will not only lose the company, Ethan. You will be forty million dollars in personal debt, facing federal bank fraud charges for the falsified revenue statements you submitted to secure your lines of credit."

Ethan felt as though the floor had opened up beneath him. He looked at Lauren, hoping for support, but Lauren was already backing toward the front entrance, her hand hovering over her mouth as she realized her "rising star" entrepreneur was about to be turned into a homeless pauper.

"Lauren..." Ethan reached out a hand. "Lauren, help me call your father's lawyers..."

"Stay away from me, Ethan!" Lauren snapped, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at Marcus Vance. "I had nothing to do with this! I didn't know he was hitting her! I'm leaving!"

She turned and ran out the front door, the click of her high heels fading rapidly down the cobblestone driveway until a car door slammed and tires squealed into the night.

Ethan was left alone on the floor, surrounded by three giants and the quiet woman he had struck twenty minutes ago.

"You have two minutes, Walker," Julian said, checking his tactical watch. "Then I stop holding Marcus back."
