Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Shadows

Nora woke up the next morning to the warm smell of freshly brewed coffee and sunlight pouring through the sheer curtains of the guest suite.

For a brief, confusing second, she forgot where she was. But as she moved her head, the sharp ache in her lip and the dull throb in her cheek instantly brought back the terrifying events of the previous night.

She sat up slowly, noticing a set of silk pyjamas she was now wearing, and a plush white robe placed at the foot of the bed. On the nightstand sat a handwritten note written in precise, elegant calligraphy:

Your sister and niece are safe. Two of my best men are stationed outside their home discreetly. Rest. Breakfast will be served when you are ready. — D.V.

A tear trickled down Nora’s cheek, but this time it wasn't from fear. It was an overwhelming sense of relief. For two years, she had lived in a constant state of hyper-vigilance, looking over her shoulder every time a shadow moved, jumping every time her phone rang, sleeping with a tire iron under her bed.

For the first time in years, she felt completely, undeniably safe.

She showered, dressed in a sleek charcoal dress that had been delivered in her exact size, and made her way downstairs. The mansion was vast and quiet, populated only by silent staff members who bowed politely as she passed.

She found Dante sitting in a sunlit breakfast alcove overlooking a immaculate manicured garden. He was wearing a dark gray suit, looking over a stack of financial documents while sipping dark coffee.

As soon as he heard her footsteps, he put his papers down and stood up immediately.

“Good morning, Nora,” he said, his voice deep and smooth. “How are you feeling?”

“Better,” she replied, sitting across from him as a maid poured her coffee. “Much better. Thank you... for the note about Sarah and my niece.”

“They will not be harmed,” Dante said firmly. “I spoke with your firm’s senior partner an hour ago. I informed him that you are taking a two-week paid leave of absence to consult directly on the Vane Holdings restructuring.”

Nora raised an eyebrow. “You took control of my schedule?”

“I did,” Dante said, without a trace of guilt. “Because until I clear up the remaining political connections your ex-boyfriend tried to leverage, you are safest here.”

Nora took a sip of her coffee, studying the powerful man across from her. “Bradley talked about corporate records. He wanted information on Vane Holdings. Why?”

Dante’s eyes darkened slightly, a shadow passing over his sharp features. “Because Bradley Jenkins was not acting alone last night.”

Nora froze, setting her cup down. “What do you mean?”

“Jenkins is a coward,” Dante explained, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table. “He lacked the intelligence or resources to find your private executive parking location on his own. Someone fed him that information. Someone who wants access to my internal offshore ledgers and knew Jenkins could be used as a desperate, violent battering ram against you.”

“Who?” Nora asked, a cold knot forming in her stomach.

“Victor Moretti,” Dante said, the name dripping with absolute icy hatred. “My former business partner. He controls the eastern docks and has been trying to force a takeover of my shipping routes for three years. He knew you had full clearance to my company’s encryption keys.”

Nora felt a sudden wave of nausea. She had thought last night was just the final, horrific climax of her personal nightmare with Bradley. She hadn't realized she was standing in the crosshairs of a brutal underworld war between two massive syndicates.

“I’ve put you in danger,” she whispered, pulling her hands back. “If Moretti knows I have access—”

“You haven't put me in danger, Nora,” Dante interrupted sharply, his hand reaching across the table to capture hers, his fingers wrapping around hers with absolute strength. “Moretti made a fatal mistake. He thought targeting you would expose a weakness in my armor.”

He leaned closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, intoxicating flame.

“He doesn't realize that touching you only gives me a reason to burn his entire empire to the ground.”
