Chapter 6 - Into the Lion's Den

The Grand Plaza Ballroom was a spectacle of decadent opulence. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, casting glittering light over hundreds of the city’s elite—politicians, judges, corporate tycoons, and high-society socialites.

When the heavy oak doors opened and Dante Vane walked in, the orchestra seemed to stumble for a beat. The chatter in the room instantly hushed into frantic, excited whispers.

At his side was Nora.

She wore an exquisite emerald-green silk dress that draped elegantly over her curves, leaving her shoulders bare. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves, and a diamond choker—a personal gift from Dante’s private vault—glistened at her neck. The faint bruise on her cheek was completely hidden beneath professional makeup, leaving her looking radiant, powerful, and utterly untouchable.

Dante walked with effortless majesty, his hand resting securely against the small of her back. Every eye in the room followed them as they navigated the crowded floor.

“They’re staring,” Nora murmured, maintaining a bright, confident smile for the surrounding cameras.

“Let them,” Dante replied smoothly, leaning down slightly toward her ear. “They are staring because you are the most stunning vision this shallow room has ever seen.”

Nora felt a sudden blush warm her cheeks, her heart doing a frantic dance against her ribs.

At the far end of the ballroom, sitting in a velvet-lined VIP booth surrounded by dark-suited bodyguards, was Victor Moretti.

Moretti was a heavy-set man in his late fifties, with slicked-back gray hair, sharp rat-like eyes, and a cruel, arrogant sneer. As he saw Dante and Nora approach, his smile faded, replaced by a flash of stunned disbelief.

He clearly hadn't expected Nora to be alive, let alone walking arm-in-arm with the city’s most dangerous man, looking like royalty.

“Dante,” Moretti said, rising slowly from his chair, offering a fake, greasy smile as they reached the table. “I was beginning to think you wouldn't make an appearance tonight.”

“I would never miss an opportunity to watch you waste your money, Victor,” Dante replied coolly, not bothering to take Moretti’s offered hand.

Moretti’s eyes slid onto Nora, his gaze lingering on her neck and face with sickening curiosity. “And who is this breathtaking creature? Ah... Miss Vance, isn't it? The legal analyst from Vane Global.”

“Miss Vance to you,” Nora said, her voice steady and icy, meeting Moretti’s gaze without a single hint of fear. “Mr. Moretti.”

Moretti chuckled, though his eyes narrowed dangerously. “Feisty. I heard a rumor you had a minor domestic disagreement a few nights ago in a parking garage. I’m glad to see you looking so... remarkably whole.”

The tension at the table spiked violently. Marco, standing two feet behind Dante, subtly shifted his stance, his hand creeping beneath his suit jacket.

Dante didn't flinch. He took a step closer to Moretti, dropping his voice to a whisper that was intended only for the older crime lord’s ears.

“Bradley Jenkins broke under three minutes of interrogation, Victor,” Dante said smoothly. “He gave us the offshore account numbers you used to pay him. He gave us the location of your unregistered warehouse on Pier 42. And he gave us the names of the three city councilmen you paid off to bypass port customs.”

Moretti’s face drained of color, his arrogant sneer completely vanishing. “You’re bluffing.”

“I don't bluff,” Dante replied calmly. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a elegant silver flash drive, and placed it gently in Moretti’s champagne glass, where it sank to the bottom. “That contains the complete files. By six o'clock tomorrow morning, every federal prosecutor in the state will have a copy. Your empire is over, Victor.”

Moretti’s body shaking with sudden, blinding rage. “You think you can ruin me in my own town? I’ll kill you! I’ll tear everything you love to pieces!”

Moretti reached toward his waist, reaching for a concealed firearm.

Before he could clear his holster, Dante moved with brutal efficiency. He grabbed Moretti’s hand, crushing the man’s fingers against the edge of the glass table, while Marco silently stepped up behind Moretti’s main bodyguard, pressing the hidden barrel of a suppressed pistol directly against the man’s ribs.

“Make a sound,” Marco whispered in the bodyguard's ear, “and you die before he hits the floor.”

The surrounding guests, laughing and drinking twenty feet away, remained entirely oblivious to the silent, lethal confrontation occurring in the VIP corner.

Dante leaned over the trembling Moretti, his slate-gray eyes pitch black with lethal intent. “You touched my city, Victor. You tried to break my business. But worst of all... you threatened Nora.”

Dante squeezed Moretti’s crushed hand until the older man let out a stifled, agonizing gurgle.

“If you are still in this city at sunrise,” Dante whispered, “I will personally make sure you never see the light of day again. Do you understand me?”

Moretti, sweating profusely, nodded frantically, tears of pain welling in his eyes.

Dante released him, stepping back gracefully. He wiped his hands on a napkin, offered his arm to Nora, and smiled warmly at her.

“Shall we dance, my dear?” Dante asked softly.

Nora looked at the broken crime lord, then back at Dante. She took his arm with a radiant smile. “I would love to, Mr. Vane.”
