Chapter 5 - The Gala Gambit

Over the next five days, the Vane Estate became both Nora’s luxury fortress and her sanctuary.
Dante provided her with a private, high-security laptop so she could continue her legal review work, but he insisted she stay within the estate grounds. Every evening, despite his demanding schedule running a billion-dollar empire, Dante returned precisely at seven o'clock to join her for dinner.
During those long evening dinners, the icy barrier between them began to melt. Nora discovered that beneath Dante Vane’s terrifying reputation lay a man of incredible intellect, surprising depth, and a dry, quiet sense of humor. He listened intently when she spoke about her law school days, her dreams of opening a non-profit legal aid clinic for domestic violence survivors, and her love for classical literature.
In turn, Dante slowly opened up to her about his own past—growing up in the unforgiving streets, taking over his family’s failing enterprise after his father was murdered by corrupt rivals, and the heavy price he paid to secure absolute power in a ruthless city.
“You carry the weight of the world on your shoulders,” Nora said softly one evening as they walked through the estate’s glass conservatory under the moonlight.
“I carry what is necessary to survive,” Dante replied, stopping beside a blooming white orchid. “In my life, weakness is death. Love, affection, empathy—those are luxuries for men who do not have enemies waiting in every corner.”
Nora looked up at him, her heart beating fast. “Is that why you’ve stayed alone all these years?”
Dante turned to her, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. “I was alone because no one was worth the risk. Until now.”
Before Nora could answer, Marco stepped into the conservatory, holding a encrypted satellite phone.
“Boss,” Marco said, his tone urgent. “Moretti has made his move. He’s hosting the annual Metropolitan Charity Gala tomorrow night at the Grand Plaza. He’s putting out word that he intends to announce a major partnership that will undermine our port leases.”
Dante’s expression hardened back into cold stone. “He’s trying to draw me out in public where he thinks I cannot strike back.”
“Should we decline the invitation?” Marco asked.
“No,” Dante said coldly. “We attend. And we end this.”
He turned to look at Nora, his eyes softening slightly. “I need to go to this event, Nora. But Moretti will have his eyes on everyone entering that ballroom.”
“I’m coming with you,” Nora said without hesitation.
Dante frowned, his brows knitting together in immediate disapproval. “Absolutely not. It is far too dangerous.”
“Moretti targeted me to get to you,” Nora argued, stepping closer, her chin raised with stubborn determination. “If I stay hidden, he will think I’m afraid. If I walk into his hall on your arm, standing tall, he loses all leverage. I am a senior legal analyst for your accounts, Dante. It makes logical sense for me to be at your side.”
Dante stared at her, caught between admiration for her bravery and a fierce, primal desire to keep her locked away safely in his fortress.
“You are playing with fire, little bird,” he warned softly.

“Then let me burn with you,” she replied firmly.
Dante stared at her for a long, heavy moment before a rare, proud smile broke through his sharp features. “Very well. But you stay at my side every second. You do not leave my sight.”
