Part 1: The Sixty Seconds I Will Never Forgive

My name is Ethan.

And there is one moment in my life I replay every single night.

Not the day I met Clara.

Not our wedding day.

Not even the day she told me we were going to become parents.

It was the sixty seconds when I stood in our bedroom doorway...

And believed the worst thing about the woman I loved.

Three days earlier, I had left home for a business trip.

It was supposed to last until Friday evening.

A simple trip.

Meetings.

Presentations.

Long conversations in conference rooms.

The kind of work that drained you but paid the bills.

Normally, I hated traveling.

But this time was different.

Because every night, I would call Clara.

And every night, she would put the phone on speaker and let me talk to our baby.

"Our little one knows your voice now," she always joked.

I would smile.

"You think so?"

She would place her hand on her stomach.

"I know so."

Clara was eight months pregnant.

The pregnancy had changed everything.

She was slower.

More tired.

She couldn't sleep comfortably.

Her back hurt.

Her feet were swollen.

But she never complained.

Not once.

She always said:

"The hard parts are temporary."

Then she would smile and add:

"Meeting our baby will make all of it worth it."

I loved that about her.

Her strength.

Her patience.

Her kindness.

Watching her become a mother made me fall in love with her all over again.

So when my final meeting ended early, I made a decision.

I booked the earlier flight.

I wanted to surprise her.

The whole way home, I imagined her reaction.

I imagined opening the door.

Seeing her shocked face.

Her smile.

Her running carefully toward me.

Her saying:

"You weren't supposed to be home yet!"

And me kneeling beside her belly.

Feeling our baby move.

I had no idea that when I opened that door...

I wouldn't find the happy surprise I expected.

I would find a scene that would make me question everything.

When I unlocked the apartment, something felt wrong immediately.

The door opened easily.

No music.

No television.

No sound.

Usually Clara played soft music while she cooked.

But the apartment was silent.

Completely silent.

"Clara?"

I called softly.

No answer.

I smiled to myself.

Maybe she was sleeping.

Maybe I really had surprised her.

I quietly placed my suitcase near the entrance.

Then I walked toward the bedroom.

The door was slightly open.

A faint light spilled into the hallway.

I pushed it open.

And stopped.

For a few seconds...

I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

Clara was sitting on the edge of the bed.

Her back was facing me.

She wasn't moving.

She was wearing the pale silk nightgown I bought her for our anniversary.

The one she loved.

The one she said made her feel beautiful even while pregnant.

But something was wrong.

The gown was backwards.

The seams were outside.

The neckline was twisted around her back.

The fabric looked uncomfortable.

Strange.

My first thought was innocent.

Maybe she was exhausted.

Maybe she got dressed in the dark.

Maybe pregnancy brain had made her forget.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Then I looked down.

The floor.

The wedding photo.

Our wedding photo.

The frame was shattered.

The glass was everywhere.

The silver frame was bent.

And across the broken picture...

Was blood.

Fresh blood.

My entire body went cold.

I stopped breathing.

My heart started pounding.

I looked at Clara.

Then at the broken photo.

Then back at Clara.

And my mind started creating answers.

Answers I didn't want.

Had someone been here?

Had there been an argument?

Had another man been in our bedroom?

Had I walked in moments after something happened?

Then my mother's voice came back.

Weeks earlier, she had looked at me seriously and said:

"Ethan, don't assume you know everything about the woman you married."

I had been angry.

I defended Clara immediately.

"Mom, you don't know her."

But now...

Those words came back.

The worst thoughts entered my mind.

What if Clara had secrets?

What if the baby...

Wasn't mine?

The thought disgusted me.

Because Clara was the woman I trusted.

The woman carrying my child.

The woman who cried when we saw the ultrasound.

The woman who kept every tiny baby item we bought.

But suspicion is cruel.

Once it enters your mind...

It starts rewriting every memory.

I stood there.

Frozen.

For almost a minute.

A full minute.

I didn't ask if she was okay.

I didn't run to her.

I didn't call for help.

I just stood there silently accusing the woman I loved.

My hands tightened.

My nails dug into my palms.

Then finally...

I forced myself to move.

"Clara..."

My voice came out broken.

She didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Clara?"

Then suddenly...

She moved.

Not like someone waking up.

Like someone trying to survive.

Her hands grabbed her stomach.

Her body curled slightly.

A weak cry escaped her lips.

And everything inside me changed.

"Clara!"

I rushed forward.

She slowly turned toward me.

Her face was pale.

Almost colorless.

Cold sweat covered her forehead.

Her hair stuck to her face.

And the thing that destroyed me most...

Was her eyes.

There was no guilt.

No fear.

No shame.

No sign that she had been caught doing something wrong.

Only pain.

Pure, terrifying pain.

She looked at me.

Her lips trembled.

She tried to speak.

Then she whispered:

"Ethan..."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"You're not supposed to be here yet..."

I grabbed her hand.

"I'm here. I'm here."

"What happened?"

She squeezed my fingers weakly.

Then she looked toward the broken wedding photo.

And with barely any strength left...

She whispered:

"I didn't want you to see this..."

My heart stopped.

"See what?"

She closed her eyes.

And said the words I would never forget.

"Someone broke in."

The room went silent.

My suspicion disappeared instantly.

Replaced by fear.

Because suddenly the story I had created in my head was completely wrong.

There wasn't another man.

There wasn't betrayal.

There wasn't a secret.

There was someone else.

Someone who had been inside our home.

Someone who hurt my pregnant wife.

I looked around the room.

The broken glass.

The blood.

The backward nightgown.

And then I noticed something I had missed before.

A detail that made my blood run cold.

The blood wasn't coming from Clara.

It was on the photo frame.

And on the floor...

There were footprints.

Not mine.

Not hers.

Someone had been standing in our bedroom.

Right before I arrived.

And whoever it was...

Had left in a hurry.

But they had forgotten one thing.

A small object hidden beneath the bed.

A piece of evidence that would reveal exactly who had attacked my wife.

May you like

And the person behind it...

Was someone I never expected.
