Part 6: The Secret Clara Never Told Me

The words echoed through the abandoned building.
"The baby isn't the only secret your wife has been hiding."
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything else.
Not the police moving outside.
Not the wind hitting the broken windows.
Not even my own breathing.
Only those words.
I looked at Adrian.
"What did you do?"
He smiled.
"Nothing."
"Not this time."
I stepped toward him.
"You hurt my wife."
He laughed quietly.
"No."
"I exposed her."
The anger inside me exploded.
"You don't know anything about her."
His face changed.
"Don't I?"
He held up the phone again.
The screen was black.
The video had ended.
But the image of Clara standing with my mother remained in my mind.
My father stepped forward.
"Adrian, this ends now."
Adrian looked at him.
For the first time...
The anger disappeared.
Replaced by something colder.
"You."
He whispered.
"The man who abandoned me."
My father lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
Adrian laughed.
"Sorry?"
"After all these years?"
"You were my son."
The sentence made Adrian freeze.
"Was I?"
My father looked shocked.
"What?"
Adrian's voice cracked.
"Because I spent my entire life wondering why you left."
"Why you chose Ethan."
I stepped forward.
"Adrian..."
He looked at me.
"Don't."
The pain in his eyes was real.
And for the first time...
I saw something besides anger.
I saw a child who had spent years feeling unwanted.
But then I remembered Clara.
And the baby.
And the fear in her eyes.
"What did you do to her?"
I asked.
Adrian looked away.
"She's safe."
I didn't believe him.
"Where is she?"
He didn't answer.
Detective Miller moved closer.
"Adrian, this is over."
Adrian smiled.
"No."
"You're all still missing the point."
He looked at me.
"Your wife knows."
"Knows what?"
He leaned closer.
"The truth about the baby."
My stomach dropped.
I remembered Clara's face.
The way she reacted when I accused her.
The way she said:
"I can't believe you thought that."
She had been hurt.
Not guilty.
But now...
What was she hiding?
Detective Miller's phone rang.
He answered quickly.
Then looked at me.
"Your wife wants to talk."
My heart jumped.
"Is she okay?"
He nodded.
"She's safe."
He handed me the phone.
"Put it on speaker."
I accepted.
"Clara?"
Silence.
Then I heard her breathing.
"Ethan..."
Her voice broke.
"I'm sorry."
Those words scared me more than anything.
"Sorry for what?"
She didn't answer.
Then my mother spoke.
"Ethan, listen to me."
I froze.
My mother.
The woman I thought betrayed us.
"What happened?"
Her voice trembled.
"I need to tell you everything."
I closed my eyes.
"Start."
She took a deep breath.
"I didn't come to hurt Clara."
"Then why were you here?"
Silence.
Then she said:
"Because I found out about Adrian."
I looked at Adrian.
He smiled.
My mother continued:
"I knew someone was watching your family."
"I knew someone wanted to destroy your marriage."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Her voice broke.
"Because Adrian threatened me."
The entire room went silent.
"What?"
"He found out about my past."
My mother paused.
"And he knew about the secret I kept from you."
I felt cold.
"What secret?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"The baby."
My heart stopped.
Everyone looked at me.
"What about the baby?"
My mother whispered:
"The baby is yours."
I let out a breath.
A breath I didn't know I was holding.
Then she continued:
"But..."
That one word destroyed the relief.
"But what?"
My mother cried.
"The pregnancy was more dangerous than Clara told you."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Clara finally spoke.
"Ethan..."
Her voice was shaking.
"I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry."
My hands tightened.
"Tell me."
She took a deep breath.
"The doctor found something."
"What?"
"A complication."
I felt my chest tighten.
"The baby?"
"The baby is okay."
I almost collapsed with relief.
"But me..."
Silence.
Then Clara whispered:
"There was a chance I wouldn't survive the birth."
The words destroyed me.
"What?"
She cried.
"I didn't tell you because you were already stressed."
"You were working."
"You were excited."
"I didn't want the last months of our pregnancy to be filled with fear."
I couldn't speak.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The exhaustion.
The quiet moments.
The way she held our baby at night.
The way she looked at me sometimes.
Like she was trying to memorize me.
She hadn't been hiding betrayal.
She had been hiding fear.
Adrian watched me.
And for the first time...
He looked uncertain.
Because his plan had failed.
He wanted me to hate Clara.
But instead...
I loved her more.
Then Adrian's expression changed.
He looked toward the exit.
Detective Miller noticed.
"Don't move."
But Adrian smiled.
"You're too late."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
He looked at me.
"Because while you were chasing me..."
"I made one final move."
My blood ran cold.
"What did you do?"
He looked at his phone.
"I sent someone to the hospital."
The room froze.
"What hospital?"
Adrian smiled.
"Where Clara was supposed to deliver the baby."
My entire body went cold.
Because Clara was eight months pregnant.
May you like
And the baby...
Was not safe anymore.
