Part 9: The Truth Hidden Before Birth

The old surgical wing was at the far end of the hospital.

A place most people didn't even know existed anymore.

The lights there were dim.

The halls were empty.

The walls carried the smell of dust and forgotten years.

But Clara was there.

My wife.

My baby.

And every second we wasted...

Was a second they could be in danger.

Detective Miller moved quickly.

"Stay behind us."

I nodded.

But inside, I knew I wouldn't.

Not when Clara was there.

Not when our child was there.

My father walked beside me.

For the first time in my life...

We weren't arguing.

We weren't carrying old wounds.

We were just two men trying to save someone we loved.

Then we heard it.

A woman's voice.

Crying.

"Clara."

I whispered.

We reached the door at the end of the hallway.

Room 7.

The old operating room.

Detective Miller raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

He listened.

A man's voice came from inside.

Vincent.

"You don't understand."

Then Clara answered.

Her voice was weak.

But strong.

"No."

She said.

"You don't understand."

My heart tightened.

Because even now...

She wasn't afraid.

She was fighting.

Detective Miller opened the door.

"Police! Step away!"

Everything happened at once.

Vincent turned.

His face changed.

My mother stood near the wall, crying.

And Clara was on the hospital bed.

Still awake.

Still fighting.

But the thing that destroyed me...

Was seeing the monitor.

The baby's heartbeat.

Fast.

Strong.

Our baby was alive.

"Clara!"

I rushed forward.

She looked at me.

And the first thing she said was:

"I'm sorry."

I almost broke.

"You don't apologize."

I held her hand.

"You hear me?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I should have told you everything."

"We'll talk later."

I whispered.

"Right now, you're safe."

But Vincent laughed.

"You still don't understand."

Detective Miller pointed his weapon.

"Don't move."

Vincent smiled.

"You think this ends with me?"

My father stepped forward.

"Vincent."

Vincent looked at him.

"You ruined everything."

My father shook his head.

"No."

"You did."

Vincent laughed.

"After everything you did to Adrian?"

I looked at my father.

"What is he talking about?"

My father closed his eyes.

And finally...

The last secret came out.

"I wasn't just Adrian's father."

Everyone looked at him.

"I was also responsible for what happened to his mother."

The room went silent.

My father continued.

"Years ago, I left Adrian and his mother because I was afraid."

"Afraid of scandal."

"Afraid of losing everything."

His voice broke.

"I chose my reputation over my son."

Adrian's anger suddenly made sense.

But Vincent wasn't finished.

"Adrian spent years trying to make you pay."

He looked at me.

"And then he found out about the baby."

"What does the baby have to do with anything?"

Vincent smiled.

"Your child carries the answer."

Detective Miller frowned.

"What answer?"

Vincent looked at Clara.

"Tell him."

Clara looked down.

I felt my heart sink.

"Tell me what?"

She closed her eyes.

"Ethan..."

"I found out something during the pregnancy."

"What?"

She swallowed.

"The doctor discovered a genetic match."

I didn't understand.

"What kind of match?"

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

"The baby is a match to Adrian."

The room went silent.

I stared.

"What?"

Clara quickly shook her head.

"No."

She grabbed my hand.

"Not like that."

She was crying.

"Adrian isn't the father."

I let out a breath.

"Then what?"

She whispered:

"The baby could help prove something."

Detective Miller listened carefully.

Clara continued.

"Before Adrian disappeared years ago, there was evidence connecting him to Vincent."

"What evidence?"

"A DNA sample."

My father looked shocked.

"Clara..."

She nodded.

"The hospital stored old records."

Vincent's expression changed.

Because he knew.

Clara continued:

"When I became pregnant, doctors found an unusual genetic marker."

"The same marker from Adrian's old case."

I looked at Vincent.

"You wanted the baby's DNA."

He smiled.

"Exactly."

Everyone froze.

Detective Miller understood.

"You were going to destroy the evidence."

Vincent didn't deny it.

For years...

He and Adrian had been hiding something.

Something serious.

Something that could send them both away.

The baby wasn't valuable because of who it was.

The baby was valuable because it could expose them.

Then suddenly...

A loud sound came from outside.

Glass breaking.

Everyone turned.

A figure appeared in the doorway.

Adrian.

But he looked different.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Broken.

He looked at Vincent.

"You lied to me."

Vincent froze.

Adrian stepped closer.

"You said you were helping me get revenge."

His voice trembled.

"But you only wanted the evidence."

Vincent's face changed.

"Adrian..."

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

"You used me."

The man who wanted to destroy my family...

Finally realized he had been used too.

Vincent moved suddenly.

He grabbed a nearby instrument.

Everyone reacted.

But before anyone could move...

Adrian stepped between Vincent and Clara.

The room went silent.

Because the man who came to take my family...

Was now protecting it.

Vincent raised the weapon.

"Move."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

And he whispered:

May you like

"For once..."

"I choose the right thing."
