Part 4: The Man I Thought Was My Enemy

The hallway was completely dark.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

The only sound was the slow, heavy pounding of my own heartbeat.

Because the voice I had just heard...

Was impossible.

"Ethan..."

The voice came again.

Older.

Rougher.

But unmistakable.

My hands went cold.

"Dad?"

For several seconds, there was no answer.

Then the flashlight beam moved.

And a figure stepped out from the shadows.

My father.

Thomas.

But that couldn't be.

Because my father had been dead for six years.

I stared at him like I was looking at a ghost.

My mouth opened, but no words came.

Detective Miller immediately stepped in front of us.

"Don't move."

His hand went toward his weapon.

The man raised his hands.

"I'm not here to hurt anyone."

I barely heard him.

I was still trying to understand what I was seeing.

"You..."

My voice cracked.

"You're dead."

My father looked at me.

And for the first time in years...

I saw sadness in his eyes.

"I know."

The answer made no sense.

Clara grabbed my arm.

"Ethan..."

She was scared.

Not because of him.

Because of me.

Because she knew my entire world had just been turned upside down.

Detective Miller stared at the man.

"Identify yourself."

The man slowly reached into his coat.

Everyone tensed.

But he pulled out only an old wallet.

Inside was an identification card.

The detective looked at it.

His expression changed.

Then he looked at me.

"Mr. Ethan..."

He paused.

"He's telling the truth."

My knees almost gave out.

My father was alive.

The man who I thought had left me forever.

The man whose funeral I attended.

The man whose last words I remembered from a hospital bed.

Was standing in my home.

"Why?"

That was the only word I could say.

He looked at me.

"I tried to protect you."

I laughed bitterly.

"Protect me?"

"You let me believe you were dead."

His face tightened.

"I had no choice."

"No choice?"

My voice rose.

"I buried you."

"I watched Mom cry."

"I watched everyone mourn you."

He looked down.

"I know."

"Do you have any idea what that did to me?"

He didn't answer.

Because he did.

Detective Miller interrupted.

"Everyone needs to calm down."

He looked at my father.

"Start explaining."

My father nodded.

His eyes moved to Clara.

"I'm sorry."

Clara frowned.

"For what?"

"For what happened to you."

The room became quiet.

He continued:

"Because your mother didn't do this alone."

My stomach dropped.

"You're talking about my mother?"

He nodded.

"She came here because she was scared."

"Scared?"

I looked at the phone.

The messages.

The photograph.

The evidence.

"She attacked my wife."

My father shook his head.

"No."

"She was trying to stop someone else."

Nobody spoke.

"What are you talking about?"

I asked.

He looked at the broken wedding photo.

Then at the blood.

Then at Clara.

"That scene wasn't created to make you think Clara cheated."

I frowned.

"Then why?"

His answer chilled me.

"To make you think Clara was dangerous."

The words sank in.

"What?"

My father stepped closer.

"Someone wanted you to turn against her."

"Who?"

He hesitated.

Then said:

"Your brother."

The room went silent.

I felt like I had been hit.

"My brother?"

I didn't have a brother.

At least...

That's what I thought.

My father looked at me with pain.

"I never told you because I wanted you away from that part of my life."

"Explain."

He took a deep breath.

"Before I met your mother, I had another family."

I stared.

"I had a son."

My entire life suddenly felt like a lie.

"What happened?"

My father looked away.

"His name was Adrian."

The name meant nothing.

Until my father continued.

"Adrian blamed me for abandoning him."

"He spent years believing I chose you over him."

I shook my head.

"Why would he hurt Clara?"

My father answered:

"Because he wants what you have."

A family.

A wife.

A child.

A life.

But there was something else.

Something much darker.

Detective Miller looked at the phone again.

"We need to find this Adrian."

My father nodded.

"He knows about the baby."

Clara's face changed.

"How?"

My father looked at her.

"Because he has been watching you."

The room went cold.

"Watching?"

I whispered.

My father nodded.

"Adrian has been following Ethan for months."

"He knows about the pregnancy."

"He knows about this apartment."

"He knows everything."

Then Detective Miller found something.

A hidden folder on the phone.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Photos.

He opened the latest photo.

It was Clara.

Taken today.

While she slept.

But the location wasn't our bedroom.

It was the hospital.

The day Clara went for her pregnancy checkup.

Someone had been following her.

For months.

Then another photo appeared.

One that made my blood run cold.

It was a picture of our baby ultrasound.

Someone had stolen it.

Written beneath the image were four words:

"My child. My family."

The detective looked at me.

"We need to find Adrian."

But before anyone could move...

My father's phone rang.

Everyone looked.

The number was unknown.

He answered.

A man's voice came through.

A voice full of anger.

"Ethan."

I froze.

The voice continued:

"You finally met the father who abandoned you."

A pause.

Then:

"Now let me show you what happens when someone takes my family."

The call ended.

My father looked terrified.

Because he knew something we didn't.

Adrian wasn't running.

He wasn't hiding.

May you like

He was coming for Clara.

And the baby.
