Part 7: The Race Against Time

For one second, nobody moved.
The words hung in the air.
"I sent someone to the hospital."
My mind stopped working.
All I could think about was Clara.
Clara.
And our baby.
"You're lying."
My voice came out low.
Adrian smiled.
"Am I?"
Detective Miller grabbed Adrian's phone.
"Unlock it."
Adrian laughed.
"You think I'm stupid?"
The detective stepped closer.
"You have no idea how close you are to spending the rest of your life in prison."
But Adrian didn't look afraid.
That terrified me.
People who were scared made mistakes.
Adrian wasn't scared.
He believed he still had control.
My father looked at him.
"Adrian."
His voice was broken.
"Don't do this."
Adrian turned.
"Now you care?"
"I always cared."
"No."
Adrian shook his head.
"You cared about him."
He pointed at me.
"You cared about the son you raised."
My father closed his eyes.
And for the first time...
I saw the weight of his regret.
But we didn't have time.
I turned to Detective Miller.
"We need to get to Clara."
He nodded immediately.
Two officers moved toward the exit.
But before we left, Adrian said something that stopped me.
"Ethan."
I looked back.
His expression had changed.
No anger.
No satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
"Ask your father about the hospital."
I frowned.
"What?"
Adrian smiled sadly.
"Ask him why he knows so much about that place."
Then he lowered his eyes.
"Ask him why your mother was really afraid."
My father went pale.
I saw it.
The reaction.
The fear.
"Dad?"
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
"What are you hiding?"
My father looked at me.
And whispered:
"The hospital isn't random."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
He swallowed.
"The doctor who treated Clara..."
"He was connected to Adrian."
Everything went silent.
My heart sank.
"You knew?"
My father looked ashamed.
"I suspected."
I stepped back.
"You suspected?"
"I was trying to confirm it."
"While my wife was in danger?"
His eyes filled with guilt.
"I thought I had more time."
I couldn't believe it.
Everyone had been protecting secrets.
Everyone had been making choices for me.
And while they did...
Clara was the one paying the price.
Detective Miller grabbed my shoulder.
"Ethan, we have to go."
He was right.
The drive to the hospital felt endless.
Every red light felt like an enemy.
Every second felt stolen.
I sat in the back seat.
Calling Clara again and again.
No answer.
The only thing keeping me from falling apart was the last message she sent.
"I love you."
Three words.
The kind of words you assume you will hear forever.
Until suddenly...
You don't know if you will.
When we arrived at the hospital, everything looked normal.
Too normal.
People walked through the entrance.
Nurses pushed carts.
Families waited.
But I knew better now.
Normal could be an illusion.
We rushed to the maternity floor.
A nurse looked at us.
"Can I help you?"
"My wife."
I said quickly.
"Clara Bennett."
The nurse checked the computer.
Her face changed.
"What?"
I asked.
"She was moved."
My heart stopped.
"Moved where?"
She looked confused.
"She requested a private room."
"When?"
"About twenty minutes ago."
Twenty minutes.
I looked at Detective Miller.
Something was wrong.
"Who approved the transfer?"
The nurse checked.
Then frowned.
"I don't know."
That was impossible.
Hospitals had records.
Names.
Signatures.
Security.
Someone had manipulated the system.
We ran down the hallway.
Then I saw it.
Room 314.
The door was open.
"Clara!"
I rushed inside.
The room was empty.
The bed was made.
The machines were disconnected.
No Clara.
No baby.
Only one thing remained.
A note on the pillow.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
The handwriting wasn't Clara's.
It said:
"You wanted the truth, Ethan."
"Now you'll see how it feels to lose everything."
Below it...
A name.
Adrian.
I felt rage explode inside me.
But then I noticed something else.
The security camera above the door.
The light was blinking.
Recording.
Detective Miller checked it.
"We have footage."
Everyone crowded around the screen.
The video played.
We saw Clara entering the room.
She was walking.
Holding her stomach.
She looked frightened.
Then a man appeared.
He wasn't wearing a mask.
He didn't hide his face.
Because he wanted us to know.
The man grabbed Clara's arm.
And Clara didn't scream.
She looked at him.
Like she knew him.
My blood turned cold.
Because the man wasn't Adrian.
It wasn't a stranger.
It was someone we trusted.
The doctor.
The same doctor who had cared for Clara's pregnancy.
The person we trusted with our baby's life.
Detective Miller froze.
"Who is that?"
My father answered quietly.
"His name is Dr. Vincent Hale."
I turned.
"You know him?"
My father looked devastated.
"Yes."
"How?"
He whispered:
"Because he was the man who helped Adrian disappear six years ago."
And suddenly the truth became clear.
This wasn't just about revenge.
Adrian wasn't acting alone.
Someone had been planning this from the beginning.

And they had taken my wife...
and my unborn child.
