Part 8: The Doctor’s Secret

The hospital hallway felt like it had become a nightmare.

A place that was supposed to protect life had become the place where my wife disappeared.

My child was somewhere I couldn't reach.

And the person responsible...

Was someone we trusted.

Dr. Vincent Hale.

The man who smiled at every ultrasound.

The man who explained every heartbeat.

The man who told us:

"Your baby is growing perfectly."

I remembered Clara holding my hand during every appointment.

Her eyes filling with tears when we heard the heartbeat.

The way she trusted him.

And now...

He had taken her.

"Find him."

My voice was barely controlled.

Detective Miller was already moving.

He grabbed his radio.

"Lock down the hospital."

"No one leaves."

Officers spread through the building.

Elevators stopped.

Security doors locked.

But my fear didn't disappear.

Because people like Adrian and Vincent didn't plan without an exit.

My father stood beside me.

His face was filled with guilt.

"Tell me everything."

I said.

He looked at me.

"Ethan..."

"No."

My voice hardened.

"I am done being protected from the truth."

He nodded slowly.

"You deserve to know."

He took a deep breath.

"Vincent Hale was never just a doctor."

"What was he?"

"Adrian's friend."

The answer made me sick.

"How long?"

"Years."

My father looked at the hospital.

"He helped Adrian after Adrian left our family."

"Why?"

"Because Vincent believed Adrian was wronged."

I laughed bitterly.

"Wronged?"

My father looked down.

"He believed I abandoned my first son."

I stared at him.

"And did you?"

The question hurt him.

"I made mistakes."

"That's not an answer."

He was silent.

Then:

"Yes."

The honesty shocked me.

"I thought I could fix things later."

He looked away.

"But later never came."

I understood something.

Adrian's anger didn't come from nowhere.

It was built from years of pain.

But pain didn't excuse what he did.

Detective Miller returned.

His face was serious.

"We found something."

"What?"

He held up a security badge.

"Dr. Hale used a restricted exit."

"Where?"

"Underground parking."

My heart dropped.

"Is there a camera?"

He nodded.

"Let's see."

The footage appeared.

We watched.

Dr. Hale pushed a wheelchair.

Someone was sitting in it.

Covered by a blanket.

My heart stopped.

"Is that Clara?"

Detective Miller zoomed in.

The blanket moved.

A hand appeared.

Clara's hand.

I almost collapsed.

"She's alive."

But then...

The video changed.

Dr. Hale wasn't alone.

Someone walked beside him.

A second person.

Someone wearing a black coat.

My father went pale.

"No..."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

The camera zoomed closer.

The face became visible.

My mother.

Again.

My chest tightened.

"She's involved?"

My father shook his head.

"No."

"Then why is she there?"

He looked terrified.

"Because she's trying to stop them."

I didn't understand.

Before anyone could explain, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked.

I answered.

"Ethan."

My mother's voice.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

"Mom?"

Her voice was shaking.

"Listen carefully."

"Where is Clara?"

"I have her."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"She's alive."

I closed my eyes.

Relief.

Fear.

Everything at once.

"Are you with Vincent?"

Silence.

Then:

"Yes."

My fists tightened.

"Why?"

My mother cried.

"Because I made a terrible mistake."

"What mistake?"

She whispered:

"I helped him."

The words destroyed me.

"What?"

"I didn't know what he planned."

My voice cracked.

"You knew about Adrian?"

"Yes."

"And you said nothing?"

She cried harder.

"I thought I could control it."

Detective Miller motioned for me to keep her talking.

I forced myself to stay calm.

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Mom."

"I'm sorry."

Her voice became desperate.

"Please listen."

"What?"

"Adrian doesn't know the truth."

I frowned.

"What truth?"

She paused.

Then whispered:

"The baby isn't just your child."

Everything stopped.

Not again.

Not another secret.

I felt anger rising.

"Don't do this."

"Ethan, listen to me."

"No."

"You need to understand."

My mother cried.

"Vincent and Adrian think they are taking your family."

"But they don't know..."

She stopped.

"Don't know what?"

Her answer came softly.

"That Clara was never their target."

A chill went through me.

"What?"

My mother whispered:

"The real target is the baby."

I looked at the hospital around me.

The child I had dreamed about.

The child I had waited for.

"Why?"

My mother answered:

"Because the baby has something Adrian needs."

I felt sick.

"What are you talking about?"

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"Your baby carries the evidence that can destroy Vincent and Adrian forever."

Silence.

The baby.

My unborn child.

Wasn't just a child in their eyes.

It was proof.

And suddenly I understood.

The broken picture.

The lies.

The attack.

The kidnapping.

None of it was about my marriage.

It was about a secret bigger than all of us.

Then my mother's voice changed.

Fear entered it.

"Ethan..."

"What?"

"You need to hurry."

"Why?"

Because in the background...

I heard another voice.

Vincent.

And he was saying:

"Give me the phone."

The call ended.

And Detective Miller looked at me.

"We know where they are."

"Where?"

He pointed toward the hospital map.

"The old surgical wing."

A place closed for years.

A place nobody used.

May you like

A place where Vincent had taken my wife.

And where my child was about to be born into a nightmare.
