Chapter 10 - The Cards Were Never the Real Problem
A year later, I still had the old seafood receipt.
I kept it in a folder.
Not because of the money.
Six hundred dollars had become insignificant compared to everything that followed.
I kept it because that receipt marked the moment I finally understood.
The cards were never the real problem.
The loan was not the beginning.
The renovation was not the beginning.
The theft was not the beginning.
The real problem was entitlement.
Brandon and his family believed my work belonged to them.
My house belonged to them.
My savings belonged to them.
Even my daughter’s place at the dinner table depended on whether she was useful to them.
They were wrong.
One evening, Skylar and I sat at the same café where we had gone after leaving the house.
She ordered the same chicken.
Mashed potatoes.
Sweet iced tea.
Then she smiled.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Can I get dessert?”
I laughed.
“Of course.”
She studied the menu.
Then said, “I think I’ll get two.”
I looked at her.
“Two?”
She smiled.
“One for now.”
“And the other?”
She leaned closer.
“In case someone tells me I’m not allowed to eat.”
For a moment, I could not speak.
Then I reached across the table and held her hand.
“No one gets to decide that again.”
Outside, cars passed through the San Bernardino night.
My phone sat quietly beside my plate.
No frantic calls.
No demands.
No panic over blocked cards.
Just silence.
The kind I had wanted for years.
Skylar took a bite of her dessert.
I watched her smile.
And I realized something.
The night I blocked every card, I thought I was cutting off their access to my money.
I was wrong.
I was cutting off their access to my life.
And that was worth more than every credit card, every account, and every house they had tried to take.
Because my daughter was no longer eating alone in the dark.
She was sitting across from me.
Eating whatever she wanted.
Laughing.
