Chapter 8 - Skylar’s Question

One night, Skylar sat beside me on the hotel bed.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Are we going home?”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Will Grandma be there?”
“No.”
“What about Dad?”
I paused.
Skylar looked down.
“Did Dad know?”
That was the hardest question.
I could have lied.
I could have protected him.
Instead, I took her hand.
“Your father made choices that hurt us.”
“Because of money?”
“Because of choices.”
She thought about this.
Then whispered, “Can I still love him?”
My eyes filled.
“Yes.”
She looked relieved.
“Even if he did something bad?”
“Yes.”
I kissed her forehead.
