Chapter 7 - Gertrude’s Last Demand

Gertrude came to see me one afternoon.
She did not apologize.
Instead, she said, “You’re destroying your family.”
I laughed.
She stared.
“You think this is funny?”
“No.”
I looked at her.
“I think it’s familiar.”
She frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“You spent years telling me family should sacrifice for family.”
“Yes.”
“So I did.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“I worked.”
I continued.
“I paid bills.”
“I gave you a home.”
“I paid Hailey’s expenses.”
“You used my card.”
“And when I stopped, you called me selfish.”
Gertrude stood.
“You’ll regret this.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
Then I smiled.
