Chapter 9 - The Day the House Became Ours Again

The legal process took months.
Brandon moved out.
Gertrude and Hailey were forced to leave.
The fraudulent loan was stopped.
The forged documents were preserved.
The house remained mine.
But when I returned, I changed everything.
I replaced the locks.
I removed the dining table where Skylar had been excluded.
I turned the dark kitchen into a bright breakfast room.
Then I took Skylar shopping.
She chose a new tablecloth.
Blue.
With yellow flowers.
“Grandma would hate it,” she said.
I laughed.
“Then it’s perfect.”
That night, we cooked together.
Chicken.
Rice.
Vegetables.
Nothing expensive.
Nothing dramatic.
But Skylar looked at the table.
Then at me.
“Everyone gets the same food?”
I smiled.
“Everyone.”
She nodded.
Then whispered.
May you like
“Good.”
