Chapter 5 - The Night Brandon Finally Told the Truth
Brandon came to my hotel.
He stood outside my room.
I opened the door but did not invite him inside.
“I made mistakes,” he said.
“Yes.”
“I was trying to fix things.”
“With a forged signature?”
He looked away.
“The business wasn’t doing well.”
“What business?”
He hesitated.
That told me everything.
I laughed.
“Your secret business?”
He closed his eyes.
“I owe money.”
“How much?”
Silence.
“How much?”
“Two hundred and eighty thousand.”
The number hung between us.
I stared.
“That’s why you needed the renovation loan.”
He nodded.
“And the seafood?”
He looked confused.
“What?”
I stepped closer.
“My daughter was eating instant noodles while you spent six hundred dollars on dinner.”
His face changed.
For the first time, shame appeared.
“I didn’t know.”
“Yes, you did.”
“No.”
“Skylar told you?”
He said nothing.
I nodded.
