PART 3 — The Secret Ava Hid From Daniel

PART 3 — The Secret Ava Hid From Daniel
Daniel stared at the document.
For several seconds…
He didn’t say anything.
And that silence terrified Ava more than anger would have.
Because Daniel was the person who used to understand every expression on her face.
He knew when she was nervous.
When she was lying.
When she was hurt.
But now…
He looked at her like she was a stranger.
“Ava.”
Her name sounded different coming from him.
Not loving.
Not familiar.
Confused.
“What is this?”
Ava looked at the folder.
Then at Margaret.
She immediately understood.
This was not an accident.
Margaret had been waiting for this moment.
Waiting until Daniel was already shaken.
Waiting until his trust was damaged.
Because the truth was always more powerful when people were afraid.
“Daniel…”
He held up the paper.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“Just answer.”
Ava swallowed.
“What do you want to know?”
His eyes moved back to the document.
“Why does this say you were investigating my family?”
The room went silent.
Even Margaret looked satisfied.
Because that was exactly what she wanted.
Daniel to see Ava as the enemy.
Ava closed her eyes.
Because she knew this day might come.
She just never imagined it would happen like this.
“I wasn’t investigating you.”
Daniel laughed once.
A painful sound.
“This says Mercer Holdings.”
A pause.
“My family’s company.”
He looked at her.
“Why were you looking into us?”
Ava didn’t answer immediately.
And that hesitation hurt him.
“You were.”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped back.
“Why?”
Margaret crossed her arms.
“Because she knew.”
Ava turned.
“Knew what?”
Margaret smiled.
“You can stop pretending.”
Ava’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know anything.”
“Oh, I know more than you think.”
Daniel looked between them.
“What is happening?”
Ava took a breath.
Then said:
“I found something before we got married.”
Daniel froze.
“Before?”
She nodded.
“Three years ago.”
The words hit him.
“Three years?”
Ava looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You were investigating my family before you met me?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I was investigating a business deal.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Explain.”
Ava looked at the papers.
“I worked with a financial group.”
He remembered.
She had always told him she was successful before marriage.
Independent.
Private.
She never talked much about it.
“I discovered irregularities in a company merger.”
“And?”
Ava’s fingers tightened.
“The company involved was connected to Mercer Holdings.”
Daniel looked at Margaret.
Then back at Ava.
“So you knew my family had problems.”
“I knew there were suspicious transactions.”
A pause.
“But I didn’t know about you.”
He looked hurt.
“Until you met me.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then Daniel asked the question that hurt the most.
“Did you marry me because of that?”
Ava’s eyes filled.
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
“I married you because I loved you.”
Daniel looked away.
Because he wanted to believe her.
But he had just learned that the person he loved kept secrets.
And secrets change everything.
Margaret stepped closer.
“Daniel, you need to think carefully.”
He looked at her.
“You manipulated her.”
Margaret smiled.
“Did I?”
She pointed at Ava.
“She hid things from you.”
Ava looked at her.
“You are twisting the truth.”
“Am I?”
Margaret pulled out another document.
“This is a transfer record.”
Daniel looked.
His face changed.
Ava knew immediately.
“What is it?”
He didn’t answer.
Margaret did.
“Before your wedding.”
A pause.
“Your wife moved a large amount of money into a private account.”
Daniel looked at Ava.
“Why?”
Ava felt trapped.
Because there was no easy answer.
“Because I was protecting myself.”
“From me?”
“No.”
“Then from who?”
She hesitated.
That was enough.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“From who, Ava?”
She looked at the window.
At the rain.
Then finally said:
“Your mother.”
The room froze.
Margaret laughed.
A cold laugh.
“Of course.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“My mother?”
Ava nodded.
“I found evidence.”
“What evidence?”
She looked at Margaret.
“Evidence that someone had been moving money through shell companies.”
Daniel frowned.
“And you thought my mother was involved?”
“I didn’t know.”
A pause.
“I suspected.”
Daniel stared.
“And you never told me?”
Ava’s voice broke.
“Because every time I tried to talk about your family…”
She stopped.
Then whispered:
“You defended them.”
That hurt.
Because it was true.
Daniel remembered.
Every conversation.
Every warning.
Every time Ava said something felt wrong.
And every time he told her she was imagining things.
Margaret suddenly stood.
Enough.
She had lost control of the conversation.
Because Daniel was starting to see both sides.
So she changed direction.
“You want the real secret?”
Everyone looked at her.
Margaret opened another file.
Ava’s face went pale.
“No.”
Daniel noticed.
“What?”
Margaret smiled.
“This one explains everything.”
She placed a birth certificate on the table.
Daniel picked it up.
His eyes moved.
Then stopped.
“What…”
His voice disappeared.
Ava looked down.
She knew.
She knew this was coming.
“What is it?”
Daniel looked at her.
His expression was broken.
“Your name.”
A pause.
“Your legal name.”
Ava said nothing.
Daniel looked back at the paper.
“You changed it.”
Silence.
Margaret spoke softly.
“Her real name isn’t Ava Collins.”
Daniel looked at Ava.
“Is that true?”
Ava nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The room felt colder.
“Why?”
Ava looked at him.
“Because I was hiding from someone.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Ava didn’t answer.
And that scared him.
“Who were you hiding from?”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“My father.”
Daniel froze.
“Your father?”
She nodded.
“He wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.”
Margaret watched carefully.
Because this was the secret she had been saving.
The one that could destroy Ava.
Ava whispered:
“He was connected to your family.”
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“What?”
“My father worked with your grandfather.”
A pause.
“And when he discovered what they were doing…”
She stopped.
“What?”
Ava looked at him.
“He disappeared.”
Silence.
Margaret smiled.
“Not disappeared.”
Everyone looked at her.
She said:
“Dead.”
Ava’s face changed.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“What are you saying?”
Margaret walked closer.
“I’m saying your wife has spent years hiding the truth.”
A pause.
“And I’m saying the accident that put her in that wheelchair…”
She looked directly at Ava.
“Was not an accident.”
The room went silent.
Ava’s breathing stopped.
Daniel stared.
“What?”
Margaret smiled.
“Ask her.”
Daniel turned slowly.
“Ava…”
His voice shook.
“Did someone try to hurt you?”
Ava opened her mouth.
But before she could answer…
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire house fell into darkness.
A sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming closer.
Margaret whispered:
“He’s here.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?”
And from the darkness…
A man’s voice answered.
“Me.”
Everyone froze.
Ava recognized the voice immediately.
A voice from her past.
A voice she thought was gone forever.
May you like
Her father’s voice.
“You should have stayed away, Ava.”
