PART 4 — The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

PART 4 — The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The voice echoed through the dark house.

And for one impossible moment…

Ava forgot how to breathe.

Because there were some voices a person never truly forgets.

Not because they are comforting.

Because they are terrifying.

Her father’s voice.

The voice from her childhood.

The voice that haunted her dreams.

The voice she had spent years trying to erase.

“No…”

The word escaped her lips.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Ava?”

But she wasn’t looking at him.

She was staring into the darkness.

Trying to convince herself that she was wrong.

That fear was playing tricks on her.

That grief was making her imagine things.

Because her father was dead.

He had to be dead.

She had seen the documents.

The reports.

The funeral.

Everything.

Then the footsteps came closer.

Slow.

Calm.

Like someone who knew they owned the room.

The emergency lights flickered on.

A man stood at the bottom of the staircase.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair gray.

But the eyes…

The eyes were the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

Familiar.

Ava’s hands began shaking.

“Dad…”

The man smiled.

Not warmly.

Not like a father.

Like someone who had just won.

“Hello, Ava.”

Daniel moved immediately.

He stepped between them.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

Then laughed softly.

“So this is Daniel.”

A pause.

“The man my daughter married.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Answer me.”

The man ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Ava.

“You look just like your mother.”

Ava felt anger replacing fear.

“Don’t say her name.”

The smile disappeared.

For the first time…

The man looked annoyed.

“You always had her attitude.”

Daniel looked at Ava.

“Who is he?”

Ava couldn’t answer.

Because saying it out loud made it real.

Margaret did it for her.

“Her father.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“What?”

Ava looked at him.

“I thought he was dead.”

The man smiled.

“I wanted everyone to think that.”

Silence.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Daniel looked at Ava.

“You knew?”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“I didn’t.”

The man laughed.

“Still protecting you, aren’t you?”

Ava looked at him.

“What do you want?”

He walked closer.

Daniel immediately blocked him.

“Stay away.”

The man looked amused.

“Protective.”

A pause.

“Good.”

Then his eyes moved toward Ava.

“Because I came for something.”

Ava’s heart sank.

“What?”

He smiled.

“What your mother stole.”

The words froze the room.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

Ava shook her head.

“No.”

The man tilted his head.

“She never told you?”

“Told me what?”

He looked at Margaret.

Then smiled.

“You really didn’t know.”

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

And that caught Ava’s attention.

Because Margaret was rarely uncomfortable.

“You knew?”

Ava looked at her.

Margaret didn’t answer.

Daniel noticed too.

“Mom.”

His voice was cold.

“What did you know?”

Margaret looked away.

The silence was enough.

Ava felt betrayed again.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone had pieces of her life.

Except her.

The man walked toward the table.

Toward the papers.

The trust documents.

The power of attorney.

He picked them up.

“You people are still fighting over money.”

A bitter smile.

“Just like always.”

Daniel stared.

“What are you talking about?”

The man looked at him.

“You think this is about your family?”

A pause.

“You think this is about control?”

He looked at Ava.

“This is about ownership.”

Ava frowned.

“Ownership of what?”

The man placed the papers down.

“Everything.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You’re not making sense.”

The man smiled.

“Your grandfather knew.”

Daniel froze.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

The man looked at him.

“The Mercer family didn’t build their fortune alone.”

Ava felt cold.

Not again.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

The man continued.

“They built it by taking.”

Margaret interrupted.

“Enough.”

Everyone turned.

Because for the first time…

Margaret sounded afraid.

The man looked at her.

“You still pretend to be in control.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“Leave.”

He laughed.

“You think you can order me?”

A pause.

“After everything we did?”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What does he mean?”

Margaret said nothing.

Daniel’s voice rose.

“Mom!”

She finally looked at him.

And Ava saw something she had never seen before.

Fear.

Real fear.

The man stepped closer to Ava.

“I didn’t come here for revenge.”

Ava laughed bitterly.

“You broke into my house.”

“You threatened my life.”

“You disappeared for years.”

“And you expect me to believe you?”

He looked hurt.

Almost.

Then it vanished.

“I came because you need to know the truth.”

Ava shook her head.

“No.”

“You do.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Every person who says that destroys my life.”

Silence.

Because everyone knew she was right.

Her father looked at Daniel.

“Ask your mother why she helped hide my disappearance.”

Daniel turned.

His face changed.

“Mom?”

Margaret looked away.

“Ava was in danger.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Margaret finally spoke.

“I was trying to protect her.”

Ava stared.

“Protect me?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“From him.”

The man laughed.

“You see?”

He looked at Ava.

“She still lies.”

Ava’s head spun.

Who was telling the truth?

Who was manipulating her?

Her whole life had become impossible to separate.

The man reached into his coat.

Everyone tensed.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

And placed it on the table.

“This belongs to you.”

Ava stared.

“What is it?”

“Your mother’s final message.”

Her heart stopped.

“No.”

“Yes.”

He pushed it toward her.

“She left it before she died.”

Ava looked at Margaret.

Then Daniel.

Nobody moved.

Finally…

She opened it.

Inside was one page.

Her mother’s handwriting.

The first line destroyed her.

My dear Ava,

If you are reading this, then everyone failed to protect you.

Her hands shook.

She continued.

I need you to understand something.

Your father did not betray me.

Ava stopped.

Her breathing changed.

Because everything she believed…

Was falling apart.

She kept reading.

The person who betrayed us was the person closest to you.

Ava looked up.

Slowly.

Everyone froze.

Daniel whispered:

“Who?”

Ava looked back at the letter.

The next sentence waited.

And when she read it…

Her entire world collapsed.

It was Margaret.

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“No.”

Margaret stepped back.

“Ava…”

But Ava wasn’t listening.

Because the woman who claimed she protected her…

The woman who forced the papers.

The woman who controlled her life.

May have been the reason her family was destroyed from the beginning.

Then the man who was supposed to be dead said one final thing.

“Now you know why she wanted you powerless.”

Ava looked at him.

“Why?”

He answered:

“Because a person without control cannot expose the truth.”

The lights flickered again.

May you like

And when they returned…

Margaret was gone.
