PART 7 — The Grandfather’s Final Game

PART 7 — The Grandfather’s Final Game
The room felt like it had lost all oxygen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody knew what to say.
Because one sentence had destroyed everything Daniel believed about his family.
The accident was arranged by me.
His grandfather.
The man who had raised him.
The man he had admired.
The man he believed built their empire through hard work.
A monster hidden behind a respected name.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
His hand was shaking.
Ava noticed.
She had seen Daniel angry.
Stressed.
Tired.
But never like this.
Broken.
“Daniel…”
He didn’t answer.
He just stared at the floor.
“My grandfather.”
His voice sounded empty.
“My grandfather did this.”
Nobody corrected him.
Because everyone knew.
The truth was finally out.
And it was worse than any lie they had imagined.
Adrian looked toward the window.
“He’s moving.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
“Your grandfather.”
Adrian’s expression was serious.
“He expected this.”
Ava frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Adrian looked at her.
“He didn’t call because he wanted Daniel.”
A pause.
“He called because he wanted us to react.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“He’s setting a trap.”
“Yes.”
The realization hit.
And immediately Daniel moved toward the door.
“I’m going.”
Ava turned.
“What?”
“I need answers.”
“No.”
Her voice stopped him.
He looked back.
Ava pushed her wheelchair slightly forward.
“You don’t go alone.”
Daniel looked at her.
“It’s dangerous.”
She almost laughed.
After everything.
After all the secrets.
After all the people deciding what she could handle.
“You don’t get to protect me by leaving me behind.”
Daniel went silent.
Because she was right.
Again.
“I won’t lose you.”
Ava looked at him.
“You almost did.”
The words hurt.
But Daniel accepted them.
Because he deserved them.
They followed the location from Daniel’s phone.
An old private property outside the city.
A place nobody visited anymore.
The old Mercer estate.
The same place where Daniel’s grandfather had built his first company.
A place full of history.
And apparently…
Secrets.
Security surrounded the area.
Marcus arrived with a team after Daniel called.
Ava looked at the old mansion through the window.
She felt something strange.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Like some part of her had been here before.
“Have you been here?”
Daniel asked.
She shook her head.
“No.”
But her voice wasn’t certain.
Adrian noticed.
“You have.”
Ava looked at him.
“What?”
He looked at the building.
“Our mother brought you here once.”
Ava froze.
“No.”
“You were young.”
“I would remember.”
Adrian smiled sadly.
“Trauma doesn’t always leave memories.”
The sentence stayed with her.
Because maybe…
Maybe there were pieces missing.
Not hidden.
Lost.
The front doors opened before they reached them.
That was worse.
Nobody opened doors unless they were expecting someone.
Inside, the mansion looked untouched.
Old furniture.
Dust.
Paintings.
Family photographs.
Daniel stopped at one.
His grandfather.
Standing beside a younger version of his father.
And another person.
A woman.
Ava moved closer.
“Who is that?”
Daniel looked.
“I don’t know.”
Adrian stepped forward.
His face changed.
“That’s your grandmother.”
Daniel stared.
“My grandmother died before I was born.”
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But not the way you were told.”
The pattern was becoming clear.
Every death.
Every disappearance.
Every story.
A lie.
Ava looked around.
“How many people knew?”
Adrian answered quietly.
“Enough.”
A sound came from upstairs.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
An old man stood at the top of the stairs.
Daniel froze.
“Grandfather.”
The old man smiled.
“Daniel.”
He looked older than the photographs.
But alive.
Very alive.
“You grew up.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The old man smiled.
“Because dead people don’t have power.”
The answer was terrifying.
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“You ruined our lives.”
The old man looked at Ava.
“Did I?”
Ava felt disgust.
“Do you know what you did?”
He ignored her.
“You are more important than you understand.”
She shook her head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
A pause.
“But nobody explains why.”
The old man smiled.
“Because your mother never told you.”
Ava stepped forward.
“Tell me.”
He walked down slowly.
“Your mother discovered something.”
“Something valuable.”
“Something that could destroy governments, companies, families.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
The old man looked at him.
“Information.”
A pause.
“Not money.”
“Not property.”
“Information.”
Ava didn’t understand.
He continued.
“Your grandmother created a system.”
“A hidden archive.”
“Every secret.”
“Every illegal deal.”
“Every betrayal.”
“All recorded.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“The archive.”
The old man looked at him.
“Yes.”
Ava looked between them.
“What archive?”
The old man smiled.
“The one your mother hid inside you.”
Silence.
Ava felt cold.
“What?”
He looked directly at her.
“Your mother didn’t leave you wealth.”
A pause.
“She left you the key.”
Her hand immediately moved to her necklace.
The small object she had carried since childhood.
The one she never understood.
The old man smiled.
“You have had it your entire life.”
Ava stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
He stepped closer.
“That key opens everything.”
Daniel looked horrified.
“And the accident?”
The old man didn’t answer.
Daniel repeated.
“The accident that injured her.”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Ava’s heart broke.
“Why?”
The old man looked at her.
“Because we needed the key.”
Ava stared.
“You hurt me…”
A pause.
“For a key?”
The old man’s expression didn’t change.
“For control.”
Then he looked at Daniel.
“And because you were becoming a problem.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“What?”
The old man smiled.
“You loved her.”
A pause.
“And love makes people weak.”
The words were disgusting.
But then Ava noticed something.
The old man wasn’t looking at her.
He was looking behind them.
At the door.
Confused.
“What?”
Everyone turned.
Nobody was there.
Then Marcus’s voice came through the communication device.
“Ms. Vance.”
Ava answered.
“What?”
A pause.
His voice became tense.
“We found Margaret’s vehicle.”
Relief almost came.
Then he continued.
“But there’s a problem.”
Ava’s stomach tightened.
“What problem?”
Silence.
Then Marcus said:
“The vehicle was empty.”
Ava looked at Daniel.
“And Margaret?”
Marcus answered:
“She was never inside.”
The old man suddenly smiled.
A terrible smile.
Because he knew something they didn’t.
“Margaret was never running away.”
Everyone looked at him.
He said:
“She was coming here.”
Ava froze.
The doors behind them suddenly locked.
The lights turned off.
And a familiar voice echoed through the mansion.
“Everyone finally gathered.”
Margaret.
Ava’s blood ran cold.
“I thought it would take longer.”
A shadow appeared near the entrance.
Margaret stepped forward.
Calm.
Perfect.
Like nothing had happened.
She looked at Ava.
Then Daniel.
Then the old man.
And smiled.
“Now…”
May you like
She said.
“Let’s finish what we started.”
