PART 6 — The Brother Who Was Erased

PART 6 — The Brother Who Was Erased

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

The man standing in the doorway held the gun steadily.

Not shaking.

Not nervous.

Like he had imagined this moment thousands of times.

Like he had waited years to say those words.

Hello, sister.

Ava stared at him.

Her mind searched through every memory.

Every photograph.

Every story.

Every family conversation.

Nothing.

There was no brother.

There had never been a brother.

Her mother had never mentioned one.

Her father had never mentioned one.

So why did this stranger look at her like they shared a lifetime?

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

The man smiled.

“You always say that.”

Ava’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“That nothing is possible.”

He stepped inside.

Daniel immediately moved in front of her.

“Put the gun down.”

The man looked amused.

“You’re Daniel.”

A pause.

“The husband.”

His eyes moved toward Ava.

“The man who was supposed to protect her.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“And you are?”

The stranger smiled.

“My name is Adrian.”

A pause.

“Adrian Vance.”

Ava felt the world tilt.

Vance.

Her family name.

Her mother’s name.

Her name.

“No.”

Again.

She shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

Adrian laughed softly.

“You really don’t know anything.”

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Her entire life had been a collection of missing information.

She looked at her father.

“Is he telling the truth?”

The man who had once been her protector looked broken.

“Yes.”

Ava stared.

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“I did.”

Her voice became colder.

“Everyone knew.”

Silence.

“Everyone except me.”

No one answered.

Because there was no defense.

Adrian lowered the gun slightly.

Not enough to make anyone comfortable.

Just enough to show he wasn’t there to shoot.

Yet.

“You want to know the truth?”

Ava looked at him.

“I’ve been asking for it my whole life.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

He walked closer.

“Because you deserve to know.”

Daniel remained between them.

“You’re not getting near her.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You still think you understand what’s happening.”

A pause.

“You don’t.”

Daniel didn’t move.

“I understand enough.”

Adrian laughed.

“No.”

His eyes turned toward Ava.

“She doesn’t even know.”

Ava felt anger rising.

“Stop talking about me like I’m not here.”

The room went quiet.

For the first time…

Adrian looked surprised.

Then he smiled.

“Mother was right.”

Ava froze.

“What did you say?”

“Mother.”

A pause.

“She always said you were stronger than me.”

The word hurt.

Because it sounded like a memory.

A family memory.

Something she had never been part of.

“Our mother?”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

Ava’s eyes filled.

“What happened?”

His expression changed.

The confidence disappeared.

And for a moment…

He looked like someone who had lost everything.

“She tried to save us.”

Ava whispered:

“From what?”

Adrian looked at their father.

“From him.”

Everyone turned.

The man lowered his eyes.

Ava’s stomach tightened.

“Dad?”

No answer.

“Tell me.”

Still silence.

Adrian answered.

“Your father worked for the Mercers.”

Ava already knew.

But Adrian continued.

“He didn’t just help them.”

A pause.

“He gave them information.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What information?”

Adrian looked at Ava.

“About us.”

Ava felt cold.

“Our mother.”

He nodded.

“You.”

A pause.

“And me.”

She shook her head.

“Why?”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Because he wanted money.”

The accusation hit.

Ava looked at her father.

“Is that true?”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

The answer destroyed something inside her.

Even though she expected it.

Even though she already knew.

Hearing it still hurt.

“I was desperate.”

Her father’s voice broke.

“They threatened us.”

Ava laughed bitterly.

“You always have a reason.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No.”

Her voice became louder.

“You were trying to protect yourself.”

Silence.

He looked down.

Because he couldn’t deny it.

Adrian walked toward the table.

He picked up the old letter.

“You want to know why Mother chose you?”

Ava stared.

“What?”

He looked at her.

“The inheritance.”

She frowned.

“My mother?”

He nodded.

“Not money.”

A pause.

“Not companies.”

“Something else.”

Ava looked confused.

“What?”

Adrian turned the letter over.

“There is a second page.”

Everyone froze.

Ava grabbed it.

“There wasn’t.”

Adrian smiled.

“Because Margaret removed it.”

Ava’s heart dropped.

She carefully checked the back.

Nothing.

Then Adrian pointed.

“Heat.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What?”

“Hidden ink.”

Ava stared.

“Like a message?”

“Yes.”

She moved toward the fireplace.

The old documents.

The hidden secrets.

Everything about her family.

Slowly…

She held the paper near the warmth.

Letters began appearing.

Faint.

Then clearer.

Her mother’s handwriting.

Ava covered her mouth.

She read:

Ava,

If you discover this, then the people who tried to control your life have failed.

Her hands shook.

She continued.

There is a reason I separated you and Adrian.

Ava looked up.

Her brother watched her.

I did not abandon him.

Adrian looked away.

I hid him because one child had to survive outside their reach.

Ava’s eyes filled.

She kept reading.

Adrian was always brave. Too brave.

He would fight anyone.

You were different.

A pause.

You were the one who could forgive.

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Forgive.”

Ava looked at him.

He looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

The letter continued:

The person who destroys our family is not the one you think.

Ava’s breathing stopped.

Everyone waited.

Then the next sentence appeared.

The real enemy is someone who has been beside you all along.

Silence.

Daniel looked around.

“Who?”

Ava continued reading.

Then her face changed.

Because the final name appeared.

A name nobody expected.

Not Margaret.

Not their father.

Not the Mercers.

Ava whispered:

“No.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What is it?”

She looked up.

Her voice barely worked.

“It says…”

A pause.

“It says the person who betrayed our family…”

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

“…was Daniel’s father.”

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared.

“My grandfather?”

Ava nodded slowly.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Because even he didn’t know.

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Then his phone rang.

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice came through.

Old.

Weak.

But familiar.

“Daniel.”

His face turned white.

Because he recognized the voice.

The grandfather who had supposedly died five years ago.

“Grandfather?”

The voice laughed softly.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You finally found the truth.”

Daniel couldn’t speak.

The voice continued:

“But now you need to know something else.”

Everyone listened.

The old man said:

“The accident that hurt Ava…”

A pause.

“Was arranged by me.”

Ava felt her entire body go cold.

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

The voice continued.

“And if you want to know why…”

A pause.

“Come alone.”

The call ended.

Daniel stood frozen.

And then everyone heard it.

A car engine outside.

Someone was leaving.

Ava looked through the window.

A black vehicle disappeared into the night.

May you like

And inside it…

Was Margaret.
