PART 8 — Margaret’s Final Betrayal

PART 8 — Margaret’s Final Betrayal

The sound of Margaret’s voice filled the mansion.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost gentle.

And that was what made it terrifying.

Because Ava had learned something about Margaret.

The more dangerous she became…

The quieter she sounded.

She never needed to scream.

She never needed to threaten.

She simply arranged things.

People.

Situations.

Lives.

Until everyone was standing exactly where she wanted.

Daniel stared at her.

His face was full of disbelief.

“Mom.”

Margaret smiled.

“My son.”

The way she said it made Ava’s stomach turn.

Like she still believed she owned him.

Like everything that happened had been nothing more than a disagreement.

“You worked with him.”

Daniel’s voice was shaking.

“With my grandfather.”

Margaret looked toward the old man.

Then back at Daniel.

“Yes.”

The answer came easily.

No denial.

No excuse.

Just yes.

Daniel took a step back.

“Why?”

Margaret tilted her head.

“Why do you think?”

“Tell me.”

His voice cracked.

“Tell me why you destroyed my family.”

Margaret sighed.

“As always, you make things emotional.”

A pause.

“You were never good at seeing the bigger picture.”

Daniel looked disgusted.

“The bigger picture?”

“Yes.”

She looked around the old estate.

“This family was built on power.”

Ava felt anger rising.

“And that gives you the right to hurt people?”

Margaret turned toward her.

For a moment, the old fake kindness returned.

The same expression she used when she brought medicine.

When she held Ava’s hand.

When she said she was helping.

“You still don’t understand.”

Ava laughed bitterly.

“No.”

“I understand perfectly.”

She looked at the wheelchair.

“The papers.”

“The medicine.”

“The lies.”

“You wanted me helpless.”

Margaret didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

Daniel stared.

The honesty was worse than any lie.

“You admit it?”

Margaret looked at him.

“I did what was necessary.”

“To protect you.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You keep saying that.”

A pause.

“But you only protected yourself.”

For the first time…

Margaret looked hurt.

Not because she regretted anything.

Because Daniel had stopped believing her.

“You think she saved you?”

Margaret pointed at Ava.

“She destroyed you.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Margaret stepped closer.

“She came into this family with secrets.”

“She investigated us.”

“She hid things from you.”

A pause.

“She never trusted you.”

Ava looked at Daniel.

The accusation hurt.

Because some of it was true.

But not for the reasons Margaret wanted.

Daniel looked at Ava.

And she saw the conflict.

The doubt.

Still there.

Even after everything.

“Daniel…”

He looked away.

Margaret noticed.

And smiled.

Because she had found the smallest crack.

“You see?”

“She still controls you.”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

But firm.

“She doesn’t.”

Margaret stopped.

Daniel looked at her.

“Not anymore.”

The old man stepped forward.

Enough.

“We’re wasting time.”

Everyone turned.

He looked at Ava.

“The key.”

Ava’s expression changed.

“You’re not getting it.”

The old man smiled.

“You don’t understand what happens if you refuse.”

“Try me.”

A pause.

“I’m tired of people threatening me.”

For a second…

Nobody spoke.

Because Ava was no longer the woman they had controlled.

She was no longer the injured wife sitting quietly.

She had spent months trapped.

And now…

She was done.

Margaret noticed.

And something changed in her expression.

“You really are like your mother.”

Ava froze.

“Don’t compare me to her.”

Margaret smiled sadly.

“That’s exactly what she would say.”

A pause.

“She was stubborn too.”

“Until it got her killed.”

The words hit.

Ava moved forward.

“Did you kill her?”

Silence.

Margaret looked away.

And that was enough.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Mom…”

Margaret didn’t answer.

Ava’s voice became colder.

“Did you?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Yes.”

The room froze.

Even the old man looked surprised.

Because maybe even he didn’t expect her to admit it.

Ava felt numb.

“Why?”

Margaret’s expression became distant.

“Because she refused to cooperate.”

A pause.

“She believed secrets belonged to people.”

“She didn’t understand.”

Ava stared.

“Understand what?”

Margaret answered:

“Secrets belong to whoever has the power to keep them.”

Daniel looked sick.

“You killed her.”

Margaret looked at him.

“I protected this family.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“You protected yourself.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“You sound just like your father.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

She smiled.

“Did you think your father was innocent?”

A pause.

“Everyone in this family is guilty.”

The words hung there.

Ava looked at Daniel.

Because he was hearing the truth of his entire life collapse.

Then the old man suddenly moved.

Fast.

He grabbed Ava’s necklace.

The key.

Everything happened at once.

Daniel reacted.

Adrian moved.

But the old man was already holding it.

Finally.

After all these years.

He had it.

The room went silent.

The old man looked at the key.

And smiled.

“Do you know how long I waited?”

Ava stared.

“My whole life.”

He laughed softly.

“Your mother thought she won.”

“She thought hiding this with you would save everyone.”

A pause.

“She was wrong.”

He turned toward the wall.

There was an old painting.

A family portrait.

He pressed the key into a hidden slot behind it.

Something clicked.

A secret compartment opened.

Everyone stared.

Inside was a small black device.

Not money.

Not jewelry.

A drive.

The old man picked it up.

“This is what everyone died for.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What is it?”

The old man smiled.

“The truth.”

He connected it to the old computer on the desk.

The screen turned on.

Files appeared.

Thousands of them.

Names.

Dates.

Records.

Everything.

Ava saw it.

Her mother’s work.

Her investigation.

Proof.

Then one file appeared.

Marked:

PROJECT AVA

Her blood froze.

Daniel saw it too.

“What is that?”

Nobody answered.

The old man opened it.

The first page appeared.

A photograph.

Ava as a child.

And below it:

SUBJECT: AVA VANCE

STATUS: SUCCESSFUL

Everyone went silent.

Adrian stepped back.

“No…”

Ava couldn’t move.

“What does that mean?”

The old man smiled.

And said:

“Your mother never told you what you really were.”

A pause.

“You weren’t just the heir.”

Ava stared.

“Then what was I?”

The old man looked at the screen.

And whispered:

“The reason everyone was fighting.”

Suddenly…

The computer began deleting files.

One by one.

Someone else had accessed the system.

Everyone looked around.

Margaret slowly smiled.

Not scared.

Not surprised.

Like she expected it.

Ava noticed.

“You knew.”

Margaret looked at her.

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

Margaret answered calmly:

“I called someone.”

The front doors opened.

A group of armed men entered.

And behind them…

A woman walked in.

Older.

Elegant.

Familiar.

Ava’s breath disappeared.

Because the woman looked exactly like her mother.

Margaret smiled.

“Meet the person who started all of this.”

The woman looked at Ava.

And whispered:

“I’m sorry, daughter.”

Ava froze.

May you like

Because her mother…

Was alive.
