Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

The black Sedan was waiting outside Norah’s dilapidated apartment building at precisely seven-fifty-five the next morning.

Norah had not slept a single minute. She had spent the dark hours pacing her cramped living room, staring at the peeling wallpaper and the empty space where her mother’s hospital bed used to sit. She had packed a single small suitcase with her modest clothing, her practical shoes, and her laptop.

When she walked down the concrete steps of her building, a tall, well-dressed driver with a quiet demeanor immediately stepped out, opened the rear door for her, and bowed his head respectfully.

"Good morning, Miss Miller. Mr. Gallow is expecting you."

Norah swallowed hard, stepping into the leather-scented interior of the luxury car. The driver closed the door seamlessly, blocking out the noisy sights and sounds of the city street. The car glided away from the curb, carrying her far away from the life she had always known.

They drove north, leaving the gritty, industrial sectors of Chicago behind and entering the opulent, gated estates of Lake Forest. Dense greenery and towering stone walls replaced the concrete gray of the city. Finally, the car turned onto a private brick driveway lined with ancient oak trees, coming to a stop in front of a breathtaking French Renaissance mansion.

It was sprawling, made of pale gray stone, with slate roofs, high arched windows, and manicured gardens that looked like something out of a fairy tale. But to Norah, it looked like a high-security fortress. Modern security cameras swept the perimeter, and two armed men in sharp suits stood at the main gates.

The driver opened her door. "Welcome to the Gallow Estate, Miss Miller."

Norah stepped out, clutching her worn leather handbag tightly against her chest. Before she could take a step toward the grand double doors, they opened wide.

Dominic Gallow stepped out onto the wide stone porch.

He looked devastatingly handsome in the morning light. He had traded his business suit for a dark cashmere sweater with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows, exposing his powerful, tattooed forearms, paired with dark trousers. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his deep eyes fixed instantly on her as she approached.

"Norah," he greeted her, his voice low and warm. He descended the stairs with a graceful, fluid power that reminded her of a apex predator stalking its territory. "You came."

"I signed the resignation letter this morning," she said, trying to keep her voice firm despite the nervous flutter in her stomach. "And I deposited the check. I keep my promises, Mr. Gallow."

"Dominic," he corrected smoothly, stopping just inches in front of her. His tall frame towered over her, casting a long shadow in the morning sun. "In this house, you call me Dominic."

He reached out, his fingers naturally finding her wrist. He didn't grab her roughly; he simply encircled her delicate pulse point with his warm hand, feeling the rapid, erratic beat of her heart beneath her skin. A dark, knowing smile touched his lips.

"You're nervous," he observed softly.

"I’m in the home of a mob boss," she retorted, looking up into his dark eyes. "Nervous is a reasonable response."

Dominic chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that sent a shockwave of electricity through her core. "Honest as always. Come inside. I’ll show you where you will be living and working."

He guided her through the grand entryway, which featured soaring ceilings, a massive crystal chandelier, and a sweeping marble staircase. The interior was decorated in rich tones of navy, gold, and deep charcoal—masculine, sophisticated, and undeniably wealthy.

He led her up the grand staircase and down a wide, carpeted hallway to a set of double oak doors. He pushed them open, revealing a breathtaking suite. The bedroom was enormous, featuring a plush king-sized bed draped in crisp white silk linens, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, a private balcony overlooking the lake, and an adjoining private office equipped with state-of-the-art computers and multi-screen displays.

"This is your private suite," Dominic said, leaning against the doorframe. "My private quarters are just across the hall. If you need anything—anything at all—you only have to ask."

Norah stepped into the room, her eyes wide as she took in the sheer luxury of it all. It was larger than her entire previous apartment. "This is... too much, Dominic. I just need a desk and a chair to do my work."

"You are not an employee sitting in a cubicle, Norah," Dominic said, his tone turning serious as he walked up behind her. She could feel the heat radiating from his body. "You are under my personal protection. While you are here, you will be treated with the utmost respect. The house staff will handle your meals, your laundry, and your comfort. Your only job is to focus on the numbers... and to let me take care of you."

Norah turned around slowly to face him, her pulse racing. "Why are you doing this? The money, the suite, the protection... I’m just an auditor."

Dominic stepped closer, closing the distance between them until there was barely an inch of space left. He reached out, his fingers gently tracing the delicate line of her collarbone above her high-necked blouse. Norah gasped softly, her eyes fluttering shut for a fraction of a second at the intoxicating feeling of his touch.

"Because, Norah," he murmured, his deep voice thick with an emotion she couldn't quite name, "you are the first real, untainted thing that has walked into my life in a very long time. In my world, everyone wants something from me. My power, my money, my life. But you... you stood in front of me with nothing left to lose, completely honest and vulnerable."

His hand moved up to cup her cheek, his thumb gently caressing her soft skin. "I told you last night. You are untethered. And I intend to bind you to me so tightly that you will never feel lonely again."

May you like

Norah stared up at him, her heart thumping wildly against her chest. She knew she should run. She knew she was walking directly into a trap built of gold and dark desires. But as she looked into Dominic’s dark, intense eyes, she realized a terrifying truth:

Part of her didn't want to leave at all.
