Chapter 8 - THE TRAP

The weeks following their night of absolute surrender were filled with unprecedented bliss for Norah.

She moved out of her guest suite and permanently into Dominic’s master bedroom. Their days were spent working side by side, and their nights were filled with intense passion, warmth, and deep emotional connection. Norah had completely bloomed under Dominic’s care; her cheeks were rosy, her dark eyes shone with happiness, and her confidence had returned tenfold.

However, the dark clouds of the mafia war were gathering quickly on the horizon.

It was a cold Thursday morning. Norah was in Dominic’s home office, reviewing the final consolidated financial reports of the Gallow family enterprise. She was cross-referencing bank records from a third-party shipping company when her eyes caught an unexpected, anomalous string of transactions.

"Wait..." she whispered to herself, leaning closer to the glowing screen.

The dummy account Frank had used was not sending money to Panama—it was receiving automatic, scheduled transfers from a secure server located right here in Chicago. The IP address traced back to a private, luxury high-rise apartment in the Gold Coast district.

"This isn't an offshore leak," Norah realized, her pulse quickening. "The person controlling the funds is still in the city. And they're using an active terminal right now."

She immediately printed the location data and ran out of the office to find Dominic.

She found him in the main tactical room downstairs, surrounded by Viktor and four senior lieutenants, reviewing map coordinates for Vance’s known hideouts.

"Dominic!" Norah said, entering the room.

Dominic instantly stood up, walking over to her, his posture softening. "Norah, what is it? I told you to rest today."

"I found the source," she said, handing him the printed report. "The money Frank stole isn't hidden in Panama. Someone is actively accessing the central shell account from a penthouse in the Gold Coast. The terminal is online right now. If you go there immediately, you can catch who is behind it before they wipe the server."

Dominic looked at the printout, his eyes darkening with intense focus. "This is the break we've been waiting for." He looked up at Viktor. "Get the tactical team ready. We move in ten minutes."

"I'm coming with you," Norah insisted, taking his hand.

"Absolutely not," Dominic said instantly, his voice firm and uncompromising. "It is far too dangerous, Norah. You stay here at the estate where it is safe."

"Dominic, I know the encryption structure of that terminal!" she pleaded, holding his gaze. "If they trigger a wipe sequence when you breach the door, your men won't know how to stop it! I can override the security system in less than thirty seconds and save the data!"

Dominic stared at her, torn between his desperate desire to keep her completely safe and the harsh reality of her undeniable logic. He hated putting her near danger, but he knew she was right.

He pulled her close, his hand cupping the back of her head, pressing his forehead against hers. "You stay inside the armored vehicle until the building is completely secured. Do you understand me, Norah? You do not step one foot outside until Viktor gives the clearance."

"I promise," she whispered softly.

Thirty minutes later, a convoy of three black armored SUVs sped down the highway toward the Gold Coast district. The sky was dark gray, heavy with impending snow.

They pulled up to the rear entrance of a sleek, glass high-rise tower. Dominic’s tactical men moved with terrifying, lethal speed, breaching the rear entrance and securing the lobby in seconds.

Norah sat in the middle armored SUV, watching the security monitors set up inside the vehicle. Viktor was standing outside her door, his weapon drawn, scanning the perimeter.

"Building secured, boss," Viktor’s earpiece crackled after five tense minutes. "Penthouse floor clear. Server terminal identified."

Dominic’s deep voice answered over the radio. "Bring Norah up under heavy guard."

Viktor opened the SUV door. "Miss Miller, it is safe. Let’s go."

Norah took her laptop bag, stepped out of the vehicle, and walked quickly into the building surrounded by four heavily armed guards. They took the private elevator directly to the top penthouse floor.

The elevator doors opened to reveal a magnificent, glass-walled penthouse overlooking the hazy skyline of Chicago. Dominic was standing near a large curved desk in the center of the living room, where a glowing server rack was flashing yellow warnings.

"Norah," Dominic said, gesturing toward the desk. "It’s triggering an auto-delete sequence. Stop it."

Norah rushed to the desk, sitting in the high-backed chair, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced, incredible speed. Lines of code scrolled down the screen at breakneck pace as she bypassed the primary security firewalls.

"Five seconds left..." she muttered under her breath, her forehead beaded with cold sweat. "Bypassing root directory... override code accepted!"

The flashing red warning light turned solid green. A loud chime echoed through the room.

"I got it!" Norah breathed out a huge sigh of relief, smiling up at Dominic. "The entire database is secured! We have every name, every transaction, every—"

Before she could finish her sentence, a heavy metal blast door suddenly slammed down over the elevator entrance behind them with a deafening CRASH.

At the exact same moment, the massive glass windows overlooking the city shattered violently inward in a hail of gunfire!

"AMBUSH!" Viktor roared, diving across the floor.

Dominic moved with lightning speed, throwing his body over Norah, tackling her off the chair and pinning her beneath him on the hardwood floor just as heavy automatic gunfire ripped through the desk above them!

The room descended into absolute chaos. Glass shattered, wood splattered, and the roaring sound of gunfire echoed deafeningly through the penthouse.

Dominic pulled his twin handguns, firing back over the edge of the overturned desk with lethal, incredible accuracy, his body completely shielding Norah from incoming fire.

"It’s a setup!" Dominic growled, his dark eyes glowing with murderous rage. "The terminal was a decoy!"

From the shattered balcony window, four men dressed in black tactical gear swung inside on ropes, throwing flashbang grenades onto the floor.

A blinding flash of white light and a ear-splitting BOOM exploded in the center of the room. Norah screamed as her ears rang violently and her vision went completely dark.

She felt strong, unfamiliar hands grab her arms, yanking her out from beneath Dominic’s protective hold.

"DOMINIC!" she screamed desperately into the smoke and flash, her hands clawing at the floor.

"NORAH!" Dominic’s voice roared through the blinding haze, filled with absolute, horrifying agony.

Norah felt a heavy cloth laced with a sweet, pungent chemical slapped violently over her nose and mouth. She kicked and struggled with all her strength, but the dark fumes quickly filled her lungs.

As her vision faded into absolute darkness, the last thing she heard was the roar of Dominic Gallow, promising to burn the world to get her back.
