Chapter 4 - DISCREPANCIES AND DANGER

Over the next three days, Norah threw herself entirely into her work.

It was the only way to escape the overwhelming intensity of her new reality. Dominic’s estate was a fortress, but inside her private suite, surrounded by glowing monitors and mountains of encrypted financial documents, Norah felt a familiar sense of control. Numbers didn't lie. They didn't have hidden motives, dark eyes, or touches that made her skin burn.

She spent fourteen hours a day systematically deconstructing the financial accounts of the Cobalt Lounge, as well as several other luxury businesses owned by the Gallow Syndicate. What she found was a terrifyingly complex web of corruption.

On Friday evening, past midnight, Norah finally cracked the main encryption code protecting Frank’s secondary ledger. A massive tree of hidden transactions expanded across her high-resolution screens.

"I found it," she whispered aloud, her eyes wide with shock.

"Found what, little bird?"

Norah jumped slightly, turning around to see Dominic standing in the doorway of her office. He was dressed in a dark silk shirt with the top buttons undone, holding two crystal glasses filled with amber liquid. He walked into the room with his signature quiet, feline grace, setting one glass down on her desk next to her laptop.

"You should really knock," she said, trying to calm her racing heart.

"It’s my house," Dominic replied smoothly, leaning over her shoulder to look at the screens. His familiar, intoxicating scent of bergamot and Scotch washed over her instantly. "What did you find?"

Norah pointed her finger at a highlighted red line running down the screen. "Frank wasn't just stealing three hundred thousand dollars. That was just the bait. He was routing millions of dollars through a dummy corporation registered in Panama. But look at the authorizations, Dominic."

Dominic’s posture instantly went rigid. His dark eyes narrowed into cold, lethal slits as he leaned closer to read the screen. "Those are internal security clearance codes."

"Yes," Norah said, looking up at him. "To execute these transfers, Frank needed top-level administrative passwords. Passwords that only three people in your high-ranking circle possess. Frank wasn't the mastermind, Dominic. He was just the fall guy. Someone very close to you is selling off your assets to a rival organization."

Dominic stood up straight, his face transforming into a mask of terrifying, icy wrath. The dark aura of power radiating from him was so potent that the air in the room felt heavy and difficult to breathe.

"Marco," Dominic spat softly, the name dripping with absolute venom.

"Marco?" Norah asked quietly. "Who is Marco?"

"My second-in-command," Dominic said, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin. "He has been with my family for fifteen years. I trusted him with my life." He looked down at Norah, his gaze softening slightly as he took in her pale, exhausted face. "You did extraordinary work, Norah. You’ve uncovered a snake in my house before he could bite my neck."

He reached out, his large, warm hand covering hers on the desk. His thumb gently rubbed the back of her trembling hand. "You look exhausted. You’ve been working for three days without proper rest."

"I... I wanted to give you answers," she admitted softly, her voice thick with fatigue. "I wanted to prove that I was worth the money you paid me."

Dominic’s eyes darkened, a flash of genuine pain crossing his striking face. "Do not ever speak of your worth in terms of money to me, Norah. You are invaluable to me. Not because of what you can do with a spreadsheet, but because of who you are."

He gently took her hand, pulling her up from her chair. Norah didn't resist. Her legs felt heavy, her mind foggy from days of endless work and anxiety. Dominic pulled her close, wrapping one arm around her waist, supporting her fragile weight against his solid frame.

"Come," he murmured softly. "It is time for you to sleep."

"I need to print these reports—"

"The reports can wait until morning," Dominic commanded softly, lifting her easily into his arms.

Norah gasped, her arms instinctively wrapping around his neck for balance. Her face was pressed right against the warm crook of his neck, inhaling his intoxicating scent. Her heart pounded furiously against her ribs, but for the first time in her life, she felt entirely safe in the arms of a dangerous man.

He carried her out of the office and into her bedroom, gently laying her down on the soft silk sheets of the king-sized bed. He reached down, unlacing her shoes and sliding them off her feet, then pulled the warm duvet over her body.

Norah looked up at him through heavy eyelids, her defense mechanisms completely shattered by exhaustion. "Dominic?"

"Yes, little bird?" he asked softly, sitting on the edge of the bed, his dark eyes watching her intently.

"Are you going to hurt him? Marco?"

Dominic’s face remained still, but his eyes glowed with a terrifying, ancient darkness. "In my world, treason is punishable by death, Norah. He threatened my empire. And more importantly... by placing Frank at the Cobalt Lounge, he put you in danger."

He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead. His lips were warm and soft against her skin, sending a wave of electric warmth straight to her chest.

"Sleep, Norah," he whispered against her skin. "I will protect you from the shadows."

May you like

Norah closed her eyes, letting out a soft sigh. As darkness pulled her under, she realized she was no longer afraid of the mafia boss sitting beside her.

She was falling for him.
