Chapter 6 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The intimacy of that night in the study altered the balance between them completely.

Norah was no longer just an auditor living in a luxury suite; she was the center of Dominic’s universe. Over the next two weeks, Dominic transformed her world. He bought her elegant dresses, filled her wardrobe with fine silks and cashmeres, and personally took her out to private, high-end dinners where entire restaurants were closed down just for them.

For the first time in her life, Norah felt cherished. She experienced the joy of laughter, fine food, and deep conversations. Dominic was a man of intense intellect and culture, opening up to her about his past, his struggles, and the heavy burden of leading a powerful family empire.

However, in Dominic’s world, peace was always an illusion.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Norah was sitting in Dominic’s grand library, reading a book by the fireplace, when the double doors burst open.

Dominic’s chief security officer, a stern man named Viktor, walked in hurriedly. His face was grave. "Mr. Gallow, we have a situation. A package was delivered to the front gate."

Dominic, who was sitting at his mahogany desk reviewing papers, looked up instantly. His eyes narrowed. "What kind of package?"

Viktor held up a sleek silver flash drive inside a plastic evidence bag. "It came with a note addressed directly to Miss Miller."

Norah set her book down, her heart instantly cold. "To me?"

Dominic stood up, walking quickly over to Viktor. He took the flash drive, his face darkening into a terrifying expression. "Plug it into the secure terminal," he ordered sternly.

Viktor plugged the drive into a hardened, offline laptop on the side table. A single video file appeared on the screen. Dominic clicked play.

The screen flickered to life, showing a dimly lit room. A man dressed in a high-end suit sat behind a dark desk. He had slicked-back gray hair, a cold, snake-like smile, and sharp blue eyes.

Norah gasped, recognizing the man immediately. It was Victor Vance—the leader of the rival Vance Crime Family, the absolute ruthless enemy of the Gallow Syndicate.

"Greetings, Dominic," Vance’s oily voice echoed through the speaker. "I see you’ve found yourself a lovely new accountant. Norah Miller, isn't it? The quiet little girl who spent her youth changing adult diapers."

Norah’s blood ran cold. She took a step back, her hands trembling violently.

"Did you really think Marco was working alone, Dominic?" Vance laughed, a dry, terrifying sound. "Marco was just a small piece of my chess board. Your little virgin auditor cleared Frank’s books, but she missed something far bigger. Something that belongs to me."

Vance leaned closer to the camera, his dark smile widening. "Enjoy her while you can, Gallow. Because very soon, I am going to take everything you value... starting with her."

The screen went black.

Silence descended upon the library, heavy and suffocating. Norah stood frozen, terror gripping her lungs like an icy hand. The shadows of Dominic’s world were finally reaching out to drag her under.

"How... how does he know who I am?" Norah whispered, her voice cracking with fear. "How does he know about my mother?"

Dominic didn't answer immediately. He stared at the blank black screen, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides, his knuckles turning stark white. The dark, terrifying aura around him was more potent than anything Norah had ever felt before.

He turned around slowly, walking toward her. His eyes were burning with a lethal, uncontrollable rage, but as he reached Norah, his touch was impossibly gentle.

He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her small, shivering body tightly against his broad chest. He buried his face in her soft hair, inhaling her soothing scent.

"He won't touch you, Norah," Dominic growled softly, his voice thick with a terrifying, absolute promise. "I will tear this city apart brick by brick before I let that bastard lay a single finger on you."

"Dominic... he said I missed something in the books," she whimpered against his shirt. "What if I made a mistake? What if I didn't find everything?"

Dominic pulled back slightly, holding her face in his hands, forcing her dark eyes to meet his. "You didn't make a mistake, Norah. Vance is trying to play psychological games with us. He wants us paranoid. He wants us weak."

He leaned down, pressing a fierce, desperate kiss to her lips. It was filled with passion, protection, and a dark possessiveness that made Norah’s heart soar despite her fear.

"You are under my protection, Norah," Dominic declared softly against her mouth. "You are my woman now. And no one takes what is mine."

May you like

Norah wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face into his chest. The fear was still there, lurking in the shadows, but as she held onto Dominic, she knew one thing for certain:

She would rather face the storm with him than live a safe, quiet life without him ever again.
