PART 3: THE CHILD SHE ERASED

PART 3: THE CHILD SHE ERASED
Daniel read the file three times.
The words refused to make sense.
Melissa Carter.
One child.
A son.
Born nine years ago.
Status: Missing.
Not dead.
Not lost.
Missing.
Daniel looked up from the papers.
“Where did this come from?”
His lawyer friend, Aaron, placed another folder on the table.
“We investigated her background after you called.”
Daniel’s eyes remained fixed on the document.
“You found this overnight?”
Aaron shook his head.
“No.”
“We found pieces.”
“Court records.”
“Old medical files.”
“Statements from neighbors.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“What statements?”
Aaron hesitated.
“People who knew her before.”
Daniel felt something heavy in his chest.
“Tell me.”
Aaron opened the folder.
“One neighbor said Melissa had a son named Evan.”
“She raised him for almost two years.”
“Then one day, the child disappeared.”
Daniel stared.
“And nobody questioned it?”
“They did.”
“What happened?”
Aaron looked down.
“Melissa told everyone the boy had died.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
The same lie.
A different child.
“How?”
“She claimed there was an accident.”
Daniel flipped through the pages.
“There should be a death certificate.”
Aaron nodded.
“There is.”
“Fake?”
Aaron didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
Daniel stood.
Lucas was asleep in the next room.
Finally sleeping peacefully.
Daniel looked through the glass door.
His son was curled under a blanket.
The same child who had sat outside in a storm.
The same child who believed he was too much.
Daniel whispered:
“How did I not see this?”
Aaron looked at him.
“Because you were grieving.”
Daniel said nothing.
Because it was true.
After Lucas’s mother died, Daniel wasn’t living.
He was surviving.
He came home.
Worked.
Paid bills.
Tried to be a father.
And when Melissa appeared…
She seemed like an answer.
Someone who could help him breathe.
Someone who could make the house feel like a family again.
But he never asked enough questions.
Never looked deeper.
Never wondered why Melissa hated certain conversations.
Especially about children.
Daniel closed the folder.
“I need to find Evan.”
Aaron nodded.
“That’s not all.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What else?”
Aaron pulled out another document.
“A witness.”
“Someone who worked at the hospital where Evan was born.”
Daniel took it.
The witness statement was old.
Written by a nurse.
The nurse claimed:
Melissa did not lose her child.
She voluntarily gave him away.
Daniel froze.
“She abandoned him?”
Aaron nodded.
“But there’s more.”
Daniel looked up.
“The nurse said Melissa wasn’t alone.”
A cold feeling spread through him.
“Who was with her?”
Aaron answered:
“Michael.”
Daniel’s face changed.
His brother.
Again.
Michael.
The same man in his bedroom.
The same man standing beside Melissa.
Daniel walked away.
He needed air.
Because suddenly everything connected.
The affair.
The lies.
The child.
The manipulation.
This wasn’t a mistake.
It was a pattern.
That evening, Daniel waited.
Melissa had been placed in a separate room while lawyers handled everything.
She looked different now.
No confidence.
No control.
Only anger.
“You’re investigating me.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You hurt my son.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Your son.”
“You really love saying that.”
Daniel stared.
“You’re sick.”
Her eyes flashed.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t pretend you’re better than me.”
“I saw you.”
“What?”
“When Lucas was younger.”
“You looked at him and saw his mother.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
Melissa continued.
“You loved him because of her.”
“That’s not true.”
“You never looked at me the way you looked at her.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re blaming a child for your insecurity.”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“I’m blaming you.”
The room went silent.
Daniel realized something.
Melissa truly believed she was the victim.
She had built an entire world where everyone else was responsible for her pain.
Then Daniel asked:
“Where is Evan?”
The question destroyed her expression.
For the first time…
Real fear appeared.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Don’t lie.”
“I don’t.”
Her eyes filled.
“I don’t know where he is.”
Daniel froze.
Because she sounded sincere.
“You gave him away.”
“Yes.”
The confession was quiet.
“But I thought he would have a better life.”
Daniel stared.
“Then why did you tell everyone he died?”
Melissa looked down.
“Because I was ashamed.”
The answer surprised him.
She continued:
“Michael told me nobody would forgive me.”
“He said if people knew I gave up my own child…”
“They would never trust me.”
Daniel felt sick.
Again Michael.
Always Michael.
“What did he do?”
Melissa looked up.
“He helped me hide it.”
Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
Aaron.
Daniel answered.
“Hello?”
Aaron’s voice was urgent.
“Daniel.”
“We found Evan.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“We found him.”
“Where?”
A pause.
Then Aaron said:
“He’s been living with a man named Michael Hayes.”
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
“No.”
Aaron continued.
“Daniel…”
“The child is listed as his son.”
Daniel couldn’t speak.
Michael.
His own brother.
Had taken Evan.
Had hidden him.
For nine years.
Daniel looked toward the room where Lucas slept.
His brother had not only betrayed him.
He had been stealing children’s lives.
Daniel hung up.
And walked back toward Melissa.
She looked at him.
“What happened?”
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“Your secret isn’t yours anymore.”
“Michael took Evan.”
Melissa’s face turned white.
“What?”
“You said he helped you.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“He didn’t help you.”
“He used you.”
For the first time…
Melissa looked truly terrified.
Because she understood.
The person she trusted most…
Was the person who destroyed everything.
And somewhere across town…
Michael Hayes was packing a suitcase.
May you like
Because he knew Daniel was coming.
And he knew the truth could not stay buried forever.
