PART 6: THE FATHER WHO NEVER DIED

PART 6: THE FATHER WHO NEVER DIED
Daniel stared at the screen.
The name didn’t change.
Richard Hayes.
His father.
A man he had buried ten years ago.
A man whose grave he had visited.
A man whose absence shaped his entire life.
Impossible.
But the evidence was right there.
The account was active.
Money was moving.
Someone was using his father’s identity.
Daniel sat alone in the dark living room.
For the first time in days, there was silence.
No accusations.
No crying.
No secrets being revealed.
Only the sound of his own breathing.
Then Lucas walked in.
“Daddy?”
Daniel immediately closed the laptop.
He forced a smile.
“Hey, buddy.”
Lucas looked at him.
The child had changed in just a few days.
Not completely.
But enough.
He wasn’t hiding as much.
He wasn’t apologizing every time he spoke.
Daniel noticed everything now.
Every small sign.
Every hesitation.
Every fear.
Lucas climbed onto the couch.
“Are you sad?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why do you ask?”
“You make the same face Mommy made.”
The words hit.
Rachel.
Again.
Daniel softened.
“Your mommy was smart.”
Lucas nodded.
“She always said you think too much.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Almost.
Then Lucas became quiet.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you going to leave me?”
The question broke him.
Daniel turned completely.
“No.”
“Never.”
“But everyone leaves.”
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“No.”
He held Lucas’s hand.
“Listen to me.”
“Adults sometimes make mistakes.”
“Sometimes they get lost.”
“But that is never because of you.”
Lucas looked at him.
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
For the first time…
Lucas smiled.
A real smile.
Small.
But real.
The next morning, Daniel met Claire.
She chose an old café far from the city.
A place where nobody knew them.
When Daniel arrived, he saw her immediately.
A woman in her sixties.
Calm eyes.
A folder on the table.
She stood as he approached.
“You look like Rachel.”
Daniel stopped.
Nobody said that anymore.
“Who are you?”
Claire sat down.
“I was Rachel’s friend.”
“Before she died.”
Daniel’s voice tightened.
“You said my father was involved.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“Tell me everything.”
She opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Messages.
Rachel’s handwriting.
Daniel recognized it instantly.
His hands shook.
“She wrote these?”
Claire nodded.
“She was afraid.”
“What did she discover?”
Claire looked at him.
“Your father wasn’t just hiding money.”
“He was building something.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“A network.”
“People.”
“Businesses.”
“Fake identities.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
Claire answered:
“Power.”
The same word.
Again.
Everyone wanted power.
Everyone destroyed lives for it.
Daniel flipped through the documents.
Then he stopped.
A photograph.
His father.
Alive.
Standing beside another man.
Daniel recognized him.
Michael.
Younger.
“What is this?”
Claire became serious.
“Your father recruited Michael years ago.”
Daniel felt sick.
“My brother?”
“Yes.”
“He convinced him that you stole everything.”
Daniel looked down.
The pattern was clear.
Michael’s resentment.
Melissa’s insecurity.
The lies.
Everything had roots.
“My father created this.”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel turned another page.
Then froze.
A report.
Rachel’s name.
Date.
The night she died.
Daniel’s breathing stopped.
“What is this?”
Claire didn’t answer.
He looked up.
“Tell me.”
Claire whispered:
“Rachel wasn’t driving when the crash happened.”
Silence.
“She was trapped.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.”
“She was trying to escape.”
“No.”
“She recorded a message.”
Claire placed a small device on the table.
Daniel stared.
“What is that?”
“The last thing Rachel left behind.”
His hands shook as he picked it up.
He pressed play.
Static.
Then Rachel’s voice.
Weak.
Afraid.
“Daniel…”
His heart stopped.
It was her.
His Rachel.
“If you hear this…”
A shaky breath.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
A tear fell.
“I found out about Richard.”
“He isn’t the man you think he is.”
“He knows about everything.”
A pause.
Then:
“He knows about Lucas.”
Daniel froze.
The recording continued.
“He knows our son is the key.”
Daniel frowned.
“What key?”
Rachel’s voice became quieter.
“Daniel…”
“If anything happens to me…”
“Protect Lucas.”
“Don’t let him take our son.”
The recording ended.
Daniel sat frozen.
His whole body shaking.
Because the woman he loved had not left him.
She had fought.
Until the end.
Claire looked at him.
“She tried to warn you.”
Daniel wiped his face.
“Why didn’t you come sooner?”
Claire looked away.
“I did.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“I tried.”
“But Richard found me.”
“He threatened my family.”
Daniel understood.
Fear.
Always fear.
But now there was something else.
Anger.
Pure anger.
That night, Daniel returned home.
He checked the cameras.
The doors.
The windows.
Everything.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice.
Older.
Calm.
“Daniel.”
His blood froze.
Because he recognized the voice.
A voice from childhood.
A voice he hadn’t heard in ten years.
“Dad?”
A pause.
Then the man laughed.
“You finally found me.”
Daniel couldn’t speak.
Richard continued:
“I’m sorry it took this long.”
Daniel’s grip tightened.
“Where are you?”
Richard answered:
“Close.”
A pause.
“Closer than you think.”
The call ended.
Daniel immediately checked the cameras.
And there…
Standing outside the house.
In the rain.
Was an old man.
Looking directly into the camera.
Richard Hayes.
May you like
Alive.
Watching his family.
