PART 8: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LIES

PART 8: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LIES

Daniel stared at the photograph.

His fingers tightened around the edges.

Claire.

The woman who sat across from him.

The woman who cried when she talked about Rachel.

The woman who gave him the evidence.

The woman who claimed she wanted the truth.

His mind rejected it.

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

“I know what you want to believe.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Claire helped me.”

“She gave me Rachel’s recording.”

Richard nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“And?”

“That was part of the plan.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“What plan?”

Richard looked tired.

“The plan to make you trust her.”

The room became silent.

Lucas watched from the stairs.

Daniel immediately looked at him.

“Buddy, go upstairs.”

Lucas hesitated.

“Are you okay?”

Daniel forced a smile.

“I’m okay.”

The boy slowly walked away.

When he disappeared, Daniel turned back.

“Explain.”

Richard took a deep breath.

“Claire worked with me.”

Daniel’s eyes darkened.

“You’re saying she helped you?”

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

“She worked against me.”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

“She wanted my empire.”

“She used Rachel.”

“She used Michael.”

“She used Melissa.”

Daniel stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Richard nodded.

“Because Claire made sure nobody knew the whole story.”

“She gave everyone pieces.”

“Enough truth to create anger.”

“Enough lies to create chaos.”

Daniel remembered.

Every conversation.

Every clue.

Every discovery.

Claire always appeared at the right moment.

She always knew something.

She always guided him.

Not toward the truth.

Toward a destination.

Richard continued:

“Claire knew Rachel would find out.”

“She knew Rachel would investigate.”

“She knew Rachel would trust her.”

Daniel’s stomach turned.

“So Rachel…”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“She was betrayed by someone she loved.”

Daniel felt sick.

The woman he thought was helping Rachel…

Was the person who destroyed her.

“Why?”

Richard looked at him.

“Because Claire believed the Whitmore family belonged to her.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

Richard’s voice became quieter.

“Because Claire was my first wife.”

The words hit.

Daniel stared.

“What?”

“Before your mother.”

Richard nodded.

“Before Eleanor.”

Daniel couldn’t process it.

“Claire?”

“Yes.”

“She never accepted that I left.”

“She believed she deserved everything.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Another person obsessed with power.”

Richard looked down.

“Yes.”

The next morning, Daniel searched everything.

Old records.

Photos.

Documents.

And he found something.

Claire’s real name.

Clara Whitmore.

Richard’s first wife.

And mother of someone Daniel never knew existed.

A child.

Daniel froze.

A child.

Again.

Another secret.

He immediately called Richard.

“Did you have another child?”

Silence.

Then Richard answered.

“Yes.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Who?”

Richard hesitated.

Then:

“Ethan.”

The name meant nothing.

But the existence meant everything.

“Where is he?”

Richard said nothing.

“Dad.”

“He disappeared.”

Daniel felt the familiar cold feeling.

“Like everyone else?”

Richard whispered:

“Yes.”

That evening, Daniel returned home.

Lucas was drawing at the table.

Daniel stopped.

The drawing showed a family.

Four people.

Daniel.

Lucas.

Rachel.

And someone else.

Daniel knelt.

“Who is this?”

Lucas looked up.

“That’s Mommy.”

“I know.”

“And this?”

Lucas smiled slightly.

“That’s me.”

“And this?”

Lucas looked at the fourth person.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Lucas shrugged.

“I just felt like someone was missing.”

The words were innocent.

But they frightened Daniel.

Because they were true.

Someone was missing.

Always.

Then the lights went out.

The entire house became dark.

Daniel immediately stood.

“Lucas.”

“I’m here, Daddy.”

Daniel grabbed his son.

Moved him behind him.

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Daniel reached for his phone.

No signal.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Daniel.”

He froze.

Because he recognized it.

A woman’s voice.

Claire.

The lights suddenly returned.

And Claire was standing in the living room.

Calm.

Smiling.

Like she belonged there.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“How did you get in?”

Claire looked at Lucas.

Then at him.

“I came to talk.”

“You lied to me.”

Claire’s smile disappeared.

“No.”

“I protected you.”

Daniel laughed.

“You destroyed my life.”

Claire looked hurt.

“You still don’t understand.”

“I saved you from Rachel’s mistake.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You killed her.”

Claire’s expression changed.

Cold.

Empty.

“She was weak.”

The words shocked him.

“She loved too much.”

“She trusted too much.”

“She thought the truth would fix everything.”

Claire stepped closer.

“But families like ours don’t survive because of love.”

“They survive because someone is willing to make hard choices.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You sound just like my father.”

Claire smiled.

“Exactly.”

Then she looked toward Lucas.

“And now…”

“Your son is the final piece.”

Daniel immediately moved in front of him.

“No.”

Claire tilted her head.

“You have no idea what he is.”

“What are you talking about?”

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a file.

Dropped it on the table.

Daniel opened it.

His face changed.

DNA results.

Family records.

And one sentence:

LUCAS HAYES IS THE LAST LIVING HEIR.

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Claire smiled.

“The reason everyone fought.”

“The reason Rachel died.”

“The reason I waited.”

Daniel looked at Lucas.

Confused.

Afraid.

And suddenly…

He understood.

May you like

Lucas wasn’t just a child caught in the middle.

He was the key to everything.
