PART 9: THE LAST HEIR

PART 9: THE LAST HEIR
Daniel couldn’t move.
The paper shook in his hands.
The words blurred.
LUCAS HAYES IS THE LAST LIVING HEIR.
A sentence that explained everything.
The lies.
The betrayals.
The years of secrets.
Everyone had been fighting over his son.
Not because they loved him.
Because they wanted what he represented.
Power.
Control.
A legacy.
Daniel slowly lowered the paper.
“You knew.”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You knew all along.”
“Yes.”
“And you let everyone hurt him?”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“Your son was never in danger with me.”
Daniel stared.
“He was standing outside in a storm.”
Claire said nothing.
Because she knew.
She had no defense.
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You watched.”
“I watched many things.”
The answer made his blood run cold.
Richard stepped forward.
“Claire, stop.”
She looked at him.
“You have no right to tell me what to do.”
Richard’s face changed.
“I created this.”
“No.”
Claire laughed.
“You started it.”
“But I perfected it.”
Daniel looked between them.
Two people.
Two monsters.
Two people who spent years treating human lives like chess pieces.
“You both are insane.”
Claire looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.”
“I spent my entire life being ignored.”
“Richard chose Eleanor.”
“The family chose Rachel.”
“Everyone chose you.”
She pointed at Daniel.
“But nobody chose me.”
Daniel shook his head.
“So you destroyed children?”
Claire’s face tightened.
“I created balance.”
“Balance?”
“Yes.”
“Everyone who had power took something from me.”
“So I took something from them.”
Daniel looked at Lucas.
His son was listening.
Too much.
He shouldn’t have to hear this.
Daniel moved toward him.
“Go upstairs.”
Lucas looked afraid.
“But Daddy—”
“Now.”
The boy nodded.
He ran upstairs.
Daniel waited until he was gone.
Then he turned back.
“Tell me everything.”
Claire smiled slightly.
“Finally.”
She sat down.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
“Rachel discovered the truth.”
“She found documents about Lucas.”
“She learned your father’s inheritance was not what everyone believed.”
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Claire looked at Richard.
“Tell him.”
Richard remained silent.
So Claire continued.
“The inheritance was never money.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Then what was it?”
“The family trust.”
She paused.
“The trust only passes to someone who carries the original bloodline.”
Daniel looked at Lucas.
“But he’s a child.”
“Yes.”
“And that’s why everyone wanted him.”
Claire nodded.
“Because whoever controls Lucas…”
“Controls everything.”
Daniel felt disgusted.
“You kidnapped a child.”
“No.”
Claire’s eyes sharpened.
“I protected an asset.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
An asset.
That was how she saw him.
Not a boy.
Not a human.
A thing.
A key.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You’re going to pay for this.”
Claire smiled.
“You think the police can fix this?”
Then she looked at Richard.
“You know what happens if everything comes out.”
Richard went silent.
Daniel noticed.
“What is she talking about?”
Richard didn’t answer.
Daniel turned.
“Dad.”
A long pause.
Then Richard said:
“The trust has one condition.”
Daniel waited.
“The heir must be protected by the family.”
“And if the family fails?”
Richard looked down.
“The inheritance disappears.”
Daniel understood.
“That’s why you all did this.”
Richard nodded.
“Everyone wanted control before someone else got it.”
The room went silent.
Then Daniel’s phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
Daniel opened it.
A picture.
Lucas.
In his bedroom.
Sleeping.
Daniel’s face changed.
He looked upstairs.
Then back at Claire.
The air disappeared from his lungs.
“You.”
Claire looked surprised.
“What?”
Daniel showed the phone.
“You took him.”
Claire’s eyes widened.
“No.”
For the first time…
She looked afraid.
“I didn’t.”
Daniel didn’t believe her.
“Where is my son?”
“I don’t know.”
“Liar.”
Claire stood.
“I swear.”
Richard suddenly looked toward the window.
His face turned pale.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
Richard whispered:
“The photo.”
“What about it?”
Richard pointed.
“Look behind Lucas.”
Daniel zoomed in.
A shadow.
A person standing near the bed.
Not Claire.
Not Richard.
Not anyone in the room.
Someone else.
Someone who had been watching.
Claire stepped back.
“No…”
Daniel looked at her.
“You know who that is.”
Claire’s face lost color.
A whisper escaped her lips.
“It can’t be.”
“Who?”
She looked terrified.
“The one person I thought was gone.”
Daniel’s heart sank.
“Who?”
Claire whispered:
“Ethan.”
The name hit.
The missing child.
Richard’s forgotten son.
Claire’s son.
Alive.
And now he had taken Lucas.
Daniel ran upstairs.
The bedroom door was open.
The bed was empty.
The window was broken.
And on Lucas’s pillow…
Was a note.
Three words.
COME FIND ME.
Daniel stared.
His hands shaking.
Because after everything…
May you like
The person everyone thought was a victim…
Had become the final threat.
