PART 4: THE BROTHER WHO STOLE EVERYTHING

PART 4: THE BROTHER WHO STOLE EVERYTHING
Michael Hayes knew the truth was coming.
He always knew.
People like him could hide secrets for years.
But they could never erase them completely.
Every lie left a mark.
Every action left a trail.
And now Daniel had found the trail.
Michael stood inside his apartment.
The suitcase on the bed was half packed.
Passport.
Money.
A few documents.
Everything he needed to disappear.
Just like he had done before.
But this time…
He was too late.
A knock came from the door.
Not a polite knock.
A warning.
Michael froze.
He looked toward the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
For a moment, he considered running.
Then he smiled.
A small, bitter smile.
Because he realized something.
He had spent his entire life running.
From mistakes.
From consequences.
From himself.
He opened the door.
Daniel stood there.
Alone.
No police.
No lawyer.
Just a brother who looked completely different from the person Michael knew.
“What do you want?”
Daniel stared at him.
“Where is Evan?”
Michael’s expression didn’t change.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Daniel stepped inside.
“You always were a bad liar.”
Michael laughed.
“Funny.”
“Coming from you.”
Daniel stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Michael closed the door.
“You think you’re the good brother?”
“The responsible one?”
“The perfect father?”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“This isn’t about me.”
“No.”
Michael walked toward the kitchen.
“It’s always been about you.”
Daniel watched him.
“You hated me.”
Michael smiled.
“You finally understand.”
“Why?”
The question came quietly.
And for the first time…
Michael’s face changed.
Because behind the anger was something older.
Pain.
“When we were kids…”
“You were always chosen.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“You.”
“Mom praised you.”
“Dad trusted you.”
“You were the son everyone wanted.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s not true.”
Michael laughed.
“You don’t even know.”
“You were too busy being loved.”
The words stayed between them.
Daniel remembered.
His childhood.
His father teaching him sports.
His mother celebrating his achievements.
Michael always quieter.
Always standing behind.
But Daniel never saw it.
Or maybe…
He never looked.
Michael continued:
“When Dad died, everything changed.”
“I thought finally…”
“Finally I would matter.”
“But then you became the one who handled everything.”
“The company.”
“The house.”
“The decisions.”
Daniel stared.
“You’re angry because Dad trusted me?”
“No.”
Michael’s voice became colder.
“I’m angry because everyone forgot I existed.”
Daniel took a breath.
“And Evan?”
Michael looked away.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.”
“What wasn’t?”
“Taking him.”
The answer shocked Daniel.
Michael continued:
“I was trying to help Melissa.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“Help?”
“You stole her child.”
Michael’s expression tightened.
“I thought I could fix it.”
“Fix it?”
Michael looked at him.
“You don’t understand.”
“I was already losing everything.”
“I needed money.”
Daniel stared.
“There it is.”
“Money.”
Michael looked down.
“I had debts.”
“People threatening me.”
“I thought…”
He stopped.
Daniel waited.
“You thought what?”
Michael whispered:
“I thought if I had a child connected to this family…”
“The inheritance would change.”
Silence.
Daniel understood.
The children.
Lucas.
Evan.
Sophia.
Everything came back to the same thing.
Control.
Legacy.
Money.
People treated children like keys.
Not human beings.
“Where is Evan?”
Michael didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Where is he?”
Michael finally looked at him.
“Safe.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Safe?”
“Yes.”
“You expect me to believe you?”
Michael shook his head.
“You shouldn’t.”
That honesty surprised Daniel.
Michael sat down.
“I made mistakes.”
Daniel stared.
“That’s all?”
“No.”
Michael’s voice broke slightly.
“I destroyed lives.”
A pause.
“But Evan…”
“He was the one thing I never meant to hurt.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Where is he?”
Michael reached for his phone.
Before he could unlock it—
The door behind Daniel opened.
A voice came from the hallway.
“Uncle Michael?”
Everyone froze.
A young boy stood there.
About nine years old.
Holding a backpack.
Looking confused.
Daniel’s heart stopped.
The face.
The eyes.
There was something familiar.
Michael stood quickly.
“Evan.”
The boy looked at Daniel.
“Who is he?”
Daniel couldn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
His nephew.
Melissa’s son.
The child everyone believed was gone.
Daniel slowly knelt.
“Hi, Evan.”
The boy looked nervous.
“Do I know you?”
Daniel swallowed.
“No.”
Then he looked at Michael.
“But I think you should have.”
Evan looked between them.
“What’s happening?”
Nobody answered.
Then Michael said something that shocked Daniel.
“Evan…”
His voice shook.
“I’m not your father.”
The boy froze.
“What?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“I never was.”
The boy stepped back.
“No.”
“I don’t understand.”
Daniel felt his chest hurt.
Another child.
Another truth falling apart.
Evan looked at Michael.
“You said my mom left me.”
Michael couldn’t look at him.
“I lied.”
The boy’s eyes filled.
“Why?”
No answer.
Because there was no excuse.
Daniel moved slowly.
He didn’t want to scare him.
“Evan.”
The boy looked at him.
“Your mom is alive.”
The words broke something.
“She is?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
The boy’s lips trembled.
“Why didn’t she come?”
Daniel looked away.
Because he didn’t know.
Because adults had created wounds children carried.
Then Michael suddenly grabbed his jacket.
“I need to tell you something.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Michael looked terrified.
“Melissa wasn’t the only one hiding things.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Michael whispered:
“Your son’s mother…”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Don’t.”
Michael continued.
“She didn’t die the way you think.”
The room became silent.
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“My wife?”
Michael nodded.
“She knew something.”
“What?”
Michael looked at him.
“And that’s why she was killed.”
Daniel stared.
The world tilted.
May you like
Because the story he believed for years…
Was another lie.
