PART 5: THE DEATH THAT WASN’T AN ACCIDENT

PART 5: THE DEATH THAT WASN’T AN ACCIDENT
Daniel couldn’t breathe.
For years.
For years he had carried the same memory.
The phone call.
The hospital.
The doctor’s tired eyes.
The words:
“We did everything we could.”
His wife was gone.
The mother of his child was gone.
And he had accepted it.
Because he had no choice.
Or so he thought.
Now Michael was standing in front of him.
Destroying the only truth Daniel had left.
“What did you say?”
His voice was low.
Michael looked down.
“I said she knew something.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Don’t play with me.”
“I’m not.”
“Then explain.”
Michael swallowed.
“Her name was Rachel.”
The name alone hurt.
Daniel looked away.
Rachel.
His wife.
Lucas’s mother.
The woman who used to laugh at his terrible jokes.
The woman who painted the nursery walls herself.
The woman who promised:
“We’ll give him the happiest childhood.”
Gone.
At least he thought she was.
Michael continued.
“Rachel found out about Melissa.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“She found documents.”
“About Evan.”
“About the fake death records.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“She knew?”
Michael nodded.
“She was going to expose everything.”
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“And then?”
Michael hesitated.
“Then she died.”
Daniel stared.
“No.”
“It was an accident.”
Michael didn’t answer.
That silence was worse.
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“Tell me the truth.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“It wasn’t an accident.”
The room went quiet.
Evan stood nearby, confused and scared.
Daniel forgot everything else.
The anger.
The betrayal.
The years.
All he could think about was Rachel.
“How?”
Michael looked broken.
“I don’t know all of it.”
“Then what do you know?”
“Rachel was investigating Melissa and me.”
“She met someone.”
“Someone who promised to help her.”
Daniel waited.
“Who?”
Michael’s eyes moved toward the floor.
“Victor.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who is Victor?”
Michael looked up.
“A man connected to the family.”
The words made Daniel uncomfortable.
Again.
Another person.
Another hidden name.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Michael laughed bitterly.
“Because I was afraid.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Everyone is always afraid.”
Michael nodded.
“Because everyone had something to lose.”
Daniel looked at Evan.
The boy was sitting silently.
Trying to understand a world collapsing around him.
Daniel’s anger softened.
He walked to Evan.
“Hey.”
The boy looked up.
“Are you really my uncle?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Evan looked confused.
“Do I have a family?”
Daniel’s heart broke.
“Yes.”
“You do.”
The boy whispered:
“Then why did nobody want me?”
Daniel had no answer.
Because the truth was painful.
Adults had failed children.
Again.
The next morning, Daniel brought Evan to Melissa.
The meeting happened under supervision.
When Melissa saw her son…
She stopped breathing.
Evan stood behind Daniel.
Not sure.
Not trusting.
Melissa covered her mouth.
“Evan…”
The boy stared.
“Are you my mom?”
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
“Yes.”
The word broke her.
“Yes, I am.”
Evan didn’t run to her.
He didn’t hug her.
He just stood there.
Because nine years of absence couldn’t disappear in one second.
Melissa understood.
She cried quietly.
“I’m sorry.”
Evan looked away.
Daniel watched.
For the first time…
He saw Melissa not as a monster.
But as someone who made terrible choices.
Someone damaged.
Someone who also hurt others.
And that made everything more complicated.
Later that day, Daniel received a call.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice.
Older.
Calm.
“I heard you found Evan.”
Daniel froze.
“Who is this?”
The woman laughed softly.
“You really don’t know.”
“Everyone knows you as the perfect son.”
“The perfect father.”
“But you never knew your own family.”
Daniel stood.
“Who are you?”
The woman replied:
“My name is Claire.”
Daniel frowned.
“I don’t know any Claire.”
“You will.”
A pause.
Then:
“I knew Rachel.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“What?”
“She came to me before she died.”
Daniel grabbed the phone tighter.
“Where are you?”
The woman ignored him.
“She discovered the truth.”
“What truth?”
The answer came slowly.
“Your wife wasn’t killed because of Melissa.”
Daniel froze.
“She was killed because she found out who was controlling everything.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Who?”
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“Your father.”
Daniel went completely still.
“My father is dead.”
“No.”
The woman answered.
“He disappeared.”
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
His father.
The man he buried years ago.
The man everyone said was gone.
Could he be alive?
That night, Daniel searched through old records.
And he found something impossible.
A transfer.
A bank account.
Opened three months after his father’s funeral.
Active.
Still receiving money.
Someone had been alive.
Someone had been watching.
Daniel looked at the name on the account.
And his blood turned cold.
The account holder was:
May you like
Richard Hayes.
His father.
