PART 7: THE MAN AT THE DOOR

PART 7: THE MAN AT THE DOOR
Daniel stared at the security monitor.
His father was standing outside.
Alive.
After ten years.
After a funeral.
After a grave.
After all the pain of believing he was gone.
Richard Hayes was standing in front of his house like he had never left.
Daniel’s first instinct was anger.
The second was fear.
Because Richard wasn’t supposed to exist.
And everything that wasn’t supposed to exist in Daniel’s life…
Had already destroyed it once.
Lucas walked into the room.
“Daddy?”
Daniel immediately turned off the screen.
“Go upstairs, buddy.”
Lucas looked at him.
“Is something wrong?”
Daniel forced himself to smile.
“No.”
But Lucas knew.
Children always knew.
“You’re doing the face again.”
Daniel almost laughed.
Almost.
“What face?”
“The worried face.”
Daniel knelt.
He placed both hands on Lucas’s shoulders.
“Listen to me.”
“You did nothing wrong.”
“You are safe.”
Lucas nodded.
But he didn’t leave.
“Is it someone bad?”
Daniel looked toward the door.
Then back at his son.
“I don’t know.”
That was the truth.
And for once…
Daniel refused to lie.
The doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
Slowly.
Richard wasn’t forcing his way in.
He was waiting.
Daniel walked toward the entrance.
Every step felt heavy.
He opened the door.
The rain hit between them.
Father and son stared at each other.
Ten years.
Ten years of questions.
Ten years of anger.
Richard looked older.
His hair was gray.
His face carried exhaustion.
But his eyes…
Those were the same.
“Daniel.”
Hearing his name from his father felt strange.
Like hearing a voice from a dream.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You’re dead.”
Richard looked down.
“I know.”
“Do you have any idea what you did?”
Richard swallowed.
“Yes.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don’t.”
“You don’t know what it was like.”
“Watching Mom break.”
“Watching everyone pretend.”
“Watching Lucas grow up without answers about his mother.”
Richard’s face changed at Lucas’s name.
“My grandson.”
Daniel laughed coldly.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t call him that.”
Richard looked hurt.
“He is.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“You lost that right.”
For a moment, Richard said nothing.
Then:
“I came back because he’s in danger.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Richard looked past him.
Inside the house.
Toward where Lucas was hiding.
“Not just from me.”
“From the people I escaped.”
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“You expect me to believe you?”
Richard nodded.
“No.”
“After everything, I wouldn’t believe me either.”
That honesty surprised Daniel.
Richard continued:
“But Rachel did.”
The name changed everything.
Daniel went still.
“You knew she was investigating.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was in danger.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“Then why didn’t you save her?”
Richard looked broken.
“Because I was too late.”
The answer was quiet.
Too quiet.
Daniel wanted to hate him.
But he saw something.
Regret.
Real regret.
“Tell me everything.”
Richard stepped inside.
But before he spoke…
He looked at Lucas.
The boy was standing halfway down the stairs.
Watching.
Richard froze.
“My grandson…”
Lucas hid slightly behind the railing.
Daniel noticed.
And his heart hurt.
His son was afraid of another adult.
Because adults had failed him too many times.
Daniel moved beside him.
“This is your grandfather.”
Lucas looked at Richard.
“You’re the one who left?”
The question hit harder than any accusation.
Richard stared.
“Yes.”
Lucas’s eyes filled.
“Why?”
Richard had no answer.
Because there was no good one.
Finally he whispered:
“Because I was a coward.”
Everyone went silent.
Richard sat down.
“I built a life around control.”
“I believed power protected people.”
“But I was wrong.”
Daniel watched him.
“Start from the beginning.”
Richard nodded.
“Your mother discovered my organization.”
Daniel frowned.
“Organization?”
Richard looked ashamed.
“Years ago, I created companies.”
“Connections.”
“Influence.”
“Things that gave me power.”
“And when people threatened to expose me…”
“I protected myself.”
Daniel felt disgusted.
“And Rachel?”
Richard looked down.
“She found the evidence.”
“She was going to tell you.”
“But someone stopped her.”
“Who?”
Richard looked at him.
“Michael.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“My brother.”
“Yes.”
“But Michael didn’t act alone.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“Who helped him?”
Richard was silent.
Then he said:
“Melissa.”
Daniel froze.
“No.”
Richard nodded.
“She knew more than you think.”
Daniel stepped back.
“Why?”
Richard answered:
“Because Melissa didn’t marry you by accident.”
The room became cold.
“What are you saying?”
Richard looked at Lucas.
Then at Daniel.
“She chose you.”
“She studied you.”
“She knew about your money.”
“She knew about Lucas.”
Daniel felt sick.
“She planned this?”
Richard nodded.
“But not alone.”
Daniel waited.
Richard’s voice dropped.
“There is someone else.”
A pause.
“Someone who has been controlling everything since Rachel died.”
Daniel stared.
“Who?”
Richard looked toward the window.
And whispered:
“The person you trusted the most.”
Daniel’s mind raced.
Melissa?
Michael?
Claire?
Someone else?
Then Richard reached into his coat.
Pulled out an old photograph.
And placed it on the table.
Daniel looked down.
The picture was old.
A family gathering.
Daniel as a child.
His parents.
Michael.
And another person.
A woman standing behind them.
Daniel’s face changed.
Because he knew her.
Everyone knew her.
She had been in his life for years.
The woman who always comforted him.
The woman who helped after Rachel died.
The woman who knew every secret.
Richard whispered:
“She was never your friend.”
Daniel stared.
The name came out slowly.
“Claire?”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
And at that moment…
Daniel realized the truth.
May you like
The person who helped him find the answers…
Was the person who had hidden them.
