PART 2 — THE FLOORBOARD THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

PART 2 — THE FLOORBOARD THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Daniel stared at Patricia.

Not because she was standing in his way.

Not because she looked terrified.

But because, for the first time in ten months…

He saw something in her eyes that he had been too desperate to notice before.

Fear.

Not the fear of a sister watching her brother-in-law destroy her beautiful new house.

Not the fear of someone being accused unfairly.

The fear of someone knowing exactly what was underneath that floor.

“Move.”

His voice was low.

Almost calm.

That was what scared everyone.

Mariana knew Daniel.

She knew what his anger looked like.

She knew his frustration.

She knew his grief.

But this was different.

This wasn’t anger.

This was the moment a father reached the edge of what he could endure.

Patricia shook her head.

“Daniel, please listen to me.”

“Move.”

“You’re not thinking clearly.”

He laughed once.

A cold, broken sound.

“My daughter heard her brother.”

Patricia swallowed.

“She’s five.”

“And you’re protecting a floorboard.”

Silence.

The words landed harder than he intended.

Because Patricia’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Enough for Mariana to see it too.

She stepped forward.

“Patricia…”

Her voice trembled.

“What is he talking about?”

Patricia looked at her.

For a second, she looked like she wanted to answer.

Like she wanted to tell the truth.

Then something closed inside her.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel’s grip tightened around the pry bar.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

“You renovated this house three months after Leo disappeared.”

Patricia’s eyes moved away.

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“You replaced the entire floor.”

“It was old.”

“And this board?”

He pointed.

“The one that doesn’t match?”

Patricia said nothing.

Daniel walked closer.

“Why does it look different?”

“I said I don’t know!”

Her voice cracked.

The room went silent.

Even Inés stopped crying.

Because everyone heard it.

Patricia wasn’t angry.

She was scared.

Daniel didn’t wait anymore.

He turned toward the floor.

Patricia grabbed his shoulder.

“Daniel!”

He pulled away.

The movement sent her stumbling backward into the couch.

“Don’t.”

The single word came from Mariana.

Not to him.

To Patricia.

Mariana looked at her sister.

Her face was pale.

“You knew something.”

Patricia’s lips parted.

“No.”

“You knew.”

“No!”

Mariana stepped closer.

“You were the first person who came when Leo disappeared.”

Patricia’s eyes filled.

“Because I love you.”

“Then why are you stopping him from opening the floor?”

No answer.

That was the answer.

Daniel placed the pry bar beneath the edge of the board.

The wood resisted.

The first crack echoed through the room.

Everyone froze.

Even Daniel.

Because from beneath the floor…

Something moved.

A weak sound.

Almost impossible to hear.

But there.

A small whimper.

Mariana collapsed.

“No…”

She covered her mouth.

“No, no, no…”

Daniel stopped breathing.

The world narrowed.

There was no house.

No sister.

No furniture.

No years of pain.

Only that sound.

The sound of his son.

Alive.

“Leo?”

His voice broke.

He dropped to his knees.

“Leo, can you hear me?”

For a moment…

Nothing.

Then:

A tiny voice.

So weak.

So quiet.

But unmistakable.

“Dad?”

Daniel fell apart.

Not completely.

Not loudly.

Just enough.

Enough that Mariana grabbed his shoulder because she thought he would fall.

“Leo.”

He pressed his ear against the floor.

“I’m here.”

A pause.

“I’m here, buddy.”

The voice underneath trembled.

“Dad…”

“I’m cold.”

Those three words destroyed him.

Because those were the same words Inés had said.

Not a story.

Not imagination.

His son was down there.

Daniel ripped the floor open faster.

The beautiful expensive hardwood cracked apart.

Pieces flew.

The elegant living room Patricia had created became a scene of desperation.

Mariana helped.

Together they pulled.

Together they destroyed everything standing between them and their child.

And Patricia…

She stood frozen.

Watching.

Not helping.

Not calling anyone.

Not screaming for emergency services.

Just watching.

Daniel noticed.

And that scared him.

“Call an ambulance.”

Patricia didn’t move.

“Patricia.”

She looked at him.

He pointed toward her phone.

“Now.”

Her hands shook.

But she still didn’t pick it up.

Mariana saw.

And something changed in her.

A mother’s grief became something sharper.

“You’re still protecting yourself.”

Patricia whispered:

“I didn’t mean for this to happen.”

The room stopped.

Daniel slowly turned.

“What did you say?”

Patricia realized too late.

Her eyes widened.

“I…”

“What did you mean?”

“I didn’t…”

“You said you didn’t mean for this to happen.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What happened, Patricia?”

She backed away.

Tears forming.

“I was trying to fix it.”

“Fix what?”

She looked at the broken floor.

At the hole.

At the truth coming out.

Then she whispered:

“The accident.”

Mariana’s face drained of color.

“What accident?”

Patricia closed her eyes.

And finally…

The secret she had carried for ten months began to come out.

“Leo didn’t disappear.”

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.

Patricia continued.

“He was never taken.”

A pause.

“He was here.”

The next words were barely audible.

But they changed everything.

“He fell.”

Mariana stared.

“No…”

Patricia cried.

“I didn’t know what to do.”

Daniel’s hands shook.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Where?”

She pointed toward the broken floor.

“The old storage space.”

The room became silent.

“There was a hidden access area beneath the house.”

Daniel stared at her.

“This house?”

Patricia nodded.

“My husband built it years ago.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Her voice broke.

“He used it for storing things.”

Daniel looked down.

At the hole.

At the darkness beneath.

At his son.

Still alive.

Still waiting.

And suddenly the most painful question came.

“If you found him…”

He looked at Patricia.

“Why didn’t you call us?”

Patricia started crying.

Real crying.

Not the dramatic tears she had shown before.

These were the tears of someone who knew there was no escape anymore.

“Because…”

She swallowed.

“Because when I opened the door…”

A pause.

“He wasn’t alone.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Patricia looked at him.

“There was someone else down there.”

Before anyone could respond…

A loud sound came from beneath the floor.

Not Leo.

Something heavier.

Something moving.

Slowly.

Coming closer.

And then…

A man’s voice echoed from the darkness.

“Patricia.”

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“You should have kept your mouth shut.”

Patricia turned toward the hole.

And her entire body began shaking.

Because she recognized the voice.

Someone who was supposed to be gone.

Someone who had disappeared the same night as Leo.

Someone Daniel had never suspected.

“Please…”

Patricia whispered.

“No…”

The voice came again.

“After everything I did for you…”

A pause.

“You’re going to betray me now?”

Daniel looked into the darkness.

And realized the nightmare was much bigger than a missing child.

Someone had been living beneath this house.

Someone had been hiding.

May you like

And they had been there the entire time.
