PART 7 — THE PERSON BEHIND EVERYTHING

PART 7 — THE PERSON BEHIND EVERYTHING
The footsteps stopped outside the door.
Daniel didn’t move.
Neither did Miguel.
The darkness inside the house felt heavier than before.
Not because the lights were gone.
Because both men knew something.
The person outside wasn’t afraid.
They didn’t rush.
They didn’t sneak.
They walked slowly.
Confidently.
Like they owned the place.
Like they knew exactly what they were doing.
Daniel whispered:
“Who is it?”
Miguel didn’t answer.
And that silence told Daniel more than words could.
Miguel knew.
He had known for years.
The same thought hit him again.
How many people knew the truth?
How many people stayed quiet while Leo suffered?
A shadow passed behind the curtains.
Daniel moved toward the hallway.
Miguel grabbed his arm.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No?”
“He wants you angry.”
“Who?”
Miguel swallowed.
“The same person who destroyed your father.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Then I want to meet him.”
Miguel shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
Daniel pulled away.
“I understand perfectly.”
A pause.
“My son spent ten months trapped underground.”
His voice lowered.
“My sister lied.”
A breath.
“Her brother threatened my family.”
Another breath.
“And now someone is standing outside your door.”
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
“I’m done being afraid.”
The doorknob moved.
Slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
A voice came from outside.
“Daniel.”
Miguel went pale.
Because he recognized it.
Daniel looked at him.
“Who?”
Miguel whispered:
“Victor.”
The name meant nothing.
But the fear behind it meant everything.
The door opened.
No force.
No violence.
Just a key.
Someone had a key.
The man who entered was older.
Well dressed.
Calm.
Silver hair.
Expensive coat.
The kind of person who looked harmless.
The kind of person people trusted.
He looked at Daniel.
Then smiled.
“Robert’s son.”
Daniel stared.
“You knew my father.”
The man smiled.
“Better than anyone.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re Victor?”
“Yes.”
“The one behind all of this?”
Victor looked almost offended.
“Behind?”
He glanced around.
“Such a dramatic word.”
A pause.
“I prefer involved.”
Daniel laughed.
A cold laugh.
“My son was kidnapped.”
Victor’s expression didn’t change.
“And he survived.”
Daniel’s fist tightened.
“You don’t get to talk about him like that.”
Victor looked at him carefully.
Then something strange happened.
He smiled.
“You really are like your father.”
Daniel froze.
Everyone said that.
But coming from him…
It sounded like an insult.
“Where is Adrián?”
Daniel asked.
Victor walked into the room.
“Probably already in custody.”
“You know.”
“Of course.”
“And Patricia?”
“Regretting her choices.”
Daniel stared.
“You’ve been watching everything.”
Victor poured himself a drink.
“Not everything.”
A pause.
“Just enough.”
Miguel stepped forward.
“Victor, this ends now.”
Victor looked at him.
And laughed.
“You still think you have a choice?”
Miguel’s face hardened.
“You lost.”
Victor looked amused.
“Did I?”
Daniel noticed something.
Victor wasn’t nervous.
Not even slightly.
A man exposed.
A man threatened.
A man whose secrets were about to come out.
Should be afraid.
But Victor wasn’t.
That meant one thing.
He still had something.
“You knew about the box.”
Victor looked at him.
“Yes.”
“What was inside?”
“Answers.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You took my son because of it.”
Victor tilted his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“Adrián took your son because he was desperate.”
Daniel frowned.
“And you?”
Victor smiled.
“I was curious.”
The words were disgusting.
Almost casual.
Like a child talking about an experiment.
Daniel felt anger explode.
“You watched.”
“Yes.”
“You watched a child suffer.”
Victor looked at him.
“Your father did worse.”
Silence.
The sentence hit.
Hard.
Because Daniel didn’t want to hear it.
But he needed to.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor looked at Miguel.
Then back at Daniel.
“Your father wasn’t the innocent man you believe.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“He built his empire using the same methods you hate.”
“No.”
“He destroyed people.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re lying.”
Victor smiled.
“Ask Miguel.”
Daniel turned.
Slowly.
Toward the man who had been like family.
Miguel looked away.
And that was enough.
“Tell me.”
Miguel didn’t answer.
“Tell me!”
The anger in Daniel’s voice filled the room.
Finally…
Miguel whispered:
“Your father made mistakes.”
Daniel laughed.
“That’s all anyone says.”
A pause.
“He made mistakes.”
Another pause.
“He hurt people.”
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“How many?”
Miguel looked broken.
“Enough.”
Silence.
Victor smiled.
“See?”
He spread his hands.
“The truth is always more complicated.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
Victor raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
“You’re trying to make monsters look like victims.”
Victor’s smile faded slightly.
“And you’re trying to believe your father was better than he was.”
That hurt.
Because maybe some part of Daniel feared it was true.
Victor walked closer.
“Your father found out about me.”
Daniel listened.
“And instead of exposing me…”
A pause.
“He tried to negotiate.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
Victor smiled.
“Because he was protecting you.”
The answer shocked him.
Victor continued:
“He knew if he attacked me publicly, your family would become a target.”
Daniel froze.
“So he hid everything?”
“Yes.”
“He sacrificed his reputation?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“He made himself look guilty.”
Daniel stared.
Because that was the kind of impossible choice his father would make.
A terrible one.
But a protective one.
Victor reached into his coat.
Daniel immediately tensed.
But Victor pulled out only a small envelope.
He placed it on the table.
“Your father wrote this.”
Daniel stared.
“For me?”
“No.”
Victor looked at him.
“For you.”
Daniel didn’t move.
“Why give it to me now?”
Victor smiled.
“Because now you’re ready.”
The words felt wrong.
“Ready for what?”
Victor turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“You think the story ended with Adrián.”
A pause.
“It didn’t.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Victor looked back.
“The man who ordered everything…”
Silence.
“Was never Adrián.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Who?”
Victor opened the door.
And before leaving, he said:
“The person you trusted most.”
The door closed.
Daniel stood frozen.
Miguel looked terrified.
And then Daniel understood.
There was only one person Victor could mean.
One person who had been there from the beginning.
One person who knew everything.
May you like
Patricia.
