PART 8 — THE BETRAYAL WE NEVER SAW

PART 8 — THE BETRAYAL WE NEVER SAW
Daniel didn’t speak for almost a full minute.
He just stood there.
Staring at the closed door.
Victor was gone.
But his words stayed.
The person you trusted most.
The sentence repeated in his mind.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Like a warning he couldn’t turn off.
Miguel was the first to move.
“Daniel…”
Daniel raised his hand.
“Don’t.”
Miguel stopped.
Because Daniel’s voice wasn’t angry.
It was worse.
It was empty.
A man who had reached the point where anger was no longer enough.
“Tell me I’m wrong.”
Miguel looked down.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Tell me Victor was lying.”
Silence.
That silence broke something.
Because Daniel already knew.
He just needed someone else to say it.
“Patricia.”
Miguel closed his eyes.
And Daniel felt the answer before he heard it.
“No.”
Miguel finally whispered.
“No?”
Daniel laughed softly.
“After everything…”
His eyes filled.
“My sister?”
The drive back home felt unreal.
The streets looked the same.
The traffic.
The lights.
The people walking.
But Daniel felt like he was watching another world.
Because ten months ago, he thought his biggest nightmare was losing Leo.
Then he found out Leo was alive.
Then he discovered his sister lied.
Then his father’s past returned.
And now…
The person who had comforted them.
The person who hugged Mariana.
The person who sat beside them while they cried.
Might have been the reason everything happened.
When Daniel arrived home, Mariana was waiting.
She knew immediately something was wrong.
“You found something.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He walked inside.
Leo was asleep upstairs.
Safe.
That was the only thing keeping him standing.
Mariana followed.
“Daniel?”
He turned.
“Did Patricia ever act strange?”
Mariana froze.
The question was unexpected.
“What?”
“After Leo disappeared.”
Mariana looked confused.
“Why?”
“Just answer.”
She thought.
Then slowly:
“She was… different.”
“How?”
Mariana sat down.
“She cried with us.”
A pause.
“But sometimes…”
“Sometimes what?”
“She seemed scared.”
Daniel stared.
“Scared of what?”
Mariana shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she whispered:
“But once, I woke up late at night.”
Daniel listened.
“She was in the kitchen.”
“And?”
“She was talking on the phone.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What did she say?”
Mariana looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know everything.”
A pause.
“But I heard one thing.”
“What?”
Mariana looked at him.
“She said…”
Her voice lowered.
“I did what you asked.”
The room went silent.
Daniel felt sick.
“When?”
Mariana looked away.
“Two weeks after Leo disappeared.”
Two weeks.
Two weeks after they started searching.
Two weeks after every day became a nightmare.
Patricia was already talking to someone.
“I thought she was helping.”
Mariana’s eyes filled.
“I thought…”
She couldn’t finish.
Daniel understood.
Because they all thought Patricia was family.
A sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard.
Both looked up.
Leo.
Daniel immediately moved.
But before he reached the stairs…
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then:
A child’s voice.
“Dad?”
Daniel froze.
It wasn’t Leo.
It sounded like him.
But older.
A recording.
“Dad…”
Then static.
Then another voice.
A woman.
Patricia.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.”
His blood went cold.
Because Patricia was on the phone.
And she sounded terrified.
The message continued.
“Please.”
Then the call ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Mariana saw his face.
“What happened?”
He looked at her.
“Patricia called.”
Her expression changed.
“She’s in danger?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
But he knew one thing.
The person controlling this was still active.
And they had Patricia now.
They found Patricia’s car two hours later.
Parked outside an abandoned warehouse.
The same warehouse where old Sterling company files were once stored.
The police arrived.
Daniel didn’t wait.
He went inside.
“Daniel!”
Detective Salazar grabbed him.
“Wait for the team.”
“My sister is inside.”
“Which is exactly why you don’t go alone.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I already lost ten months.”
A pause.
“I’m not losing another second.”
Salazar saw something in his face.
Then nodded.
“Stay behind us.”
The warehouse was dark.
Dust covered everything.
Old boxes.
Broken equipment.
Memories of a company that no longer existed.
Then they heard it.
A voice.
“Daniel.”
Patricia.
They rushed forward.
She was tied to a chair.
Alive.
But injured.
And standing behind her…
Was someone Daniel recognized.
Someone he never expected.
Someone who had been part of the investigation.
Someone who knew every detail.
Detective Salazar stopped.
His face changed.
“No.”
The man smiled.
“Hello, Detective.”
Daniel stared.
Because the person holding Patricia hostage…
Was the one man everyone trusted to find the truth.
“Officer?”
The man laughed.
“Not anymore.”
Salazar’s hand moved toward his weapon.
But the man pointed a gun.
“Don’t.”
Daniel looked at Patricia.
She was crying.
“Daniel…”
He walked closer.
“Who is he?”
Patricia couldn’t answer.
The man did.
“My name is not important.”
A pause.
“What matters is that I’ve been cleaning up your father’s mess for years.”
Daniel stared.
“What mess?”
The man smiled.
“The truth.”
Patricia looked at Daniel.
“I’m sorry.”
He looked at her.
Not with forgiveness.
Not yet.
Just pain.
“You knew.”
She cried.
“I knew something.”
“What?”
She swallowed.
“Your father hid evidence.”
Daniel stared.
“And you helped hide it.”
“Yes.”
The admission hurt.
“Why?”
Patricia looked at the man behind her.
“Because he threatened my family.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Your family?”
The man laughed.
“She still doesn’t understand.”
Everyone looked at him.
He stepped closer.
“Patricia wasn’t protecting herself.”
A pause.
“She was protecting someone else.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Who?”
The man smiled.
Then said the words that destroyed everything.
“Your father’s real secret.”
A pause.
“Your father had another child.”
Silence.
No one moved.
Daniel felt the world tilt.
Another child.
Impossible.
His father.
Another family.
Another secret.
The man continued:
“And that child…”
He looked directly at Daniel.
May you like
“Is the reason Leo was taken.”
