PART 5 — THE BOX WITH MY NAME ON IT

The police removed Adrián from the house at 3:42 in the morning.

Daniel remembered the exact time.

Because after ten months of waking up with no answers…

He finally watched the person responsible walk away in handcuffs.

But the strange thing was…

He didn’t feel relieved.

Not completely.

Because Leo was safe.

That was all that mattered.

Everything else could wait.

The doctors checked Leo immediately.

They found dehydration.

Weakness.

Several minor injuries.

But nothing that couldn’t heal.

The doctor said the words every parent dreams of hearing.

“He’s going to be okay.”

Mariana cried when she heard it.

Daniel did too.

Not because he was weak.

Because he had been strong for too long.

The hospital room was quiet.

Leo slept.

One hand wrapped around Daniel’s finger.

Like he was afraid that if he let go…

His father would disappear again.

Daniel sat beside him.

Watching every breath.

Every small movement.

Trying to understand how his son had survived.

How a seven-year-old child had stayed alive in a hidden room beneath a house.

Alone.

Afraid.

But waiting.

The door opened softly.

Mariana entered.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

But different.

Like something inside her had changed.

“He asked for you when he woke up.”

Daniel nodded.

“He’s scared.”

“I know.”

A long silence.

Then Mariana said:

“Patricia confessed.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“She told the police everything.”

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know what to feel.

Anger?

Yes.

Betrayal?

Yes.

But there was something else.

Sadness.

Because Patricia wasn’t a stranger.

She was family.

And family was supposed to protect you.

Not destroy you.

“What did she say?”

Mariana sat down.

“She said Adrián threatened her.”

Daniel looked at Leo.

“And she believed him.”

Mariana lowered her eyes.

“She said she thought if she stayed quiet, he would leave.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“He had our son.”

“I know.”

“She knew.”

“I know.”

Mariana’s voice broke.

“I know, Daniel.”

The pain in her voice stopped him.

Because she was carrying her own guilt.

She had lost ten months too.

Not the same way.

But she had lost them.

The next morning, Detective Salazar came to the hospital.

He had been working Leo’s case since day one.

Daniel remembered him.

The tired eyes.

The careful words.

The way he tried to stay hopeful even when everyone else started preparing for the worst.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel nodded.

“Thank you.”

Salazar looked at Leo sleeping.

“Seeing him here…”

He shook his head.

“I honestly didn’t think we’d get this ending.”

Neither did Daniel.

The detective sat down.

“There’s something else.”

Daniel immediately became alert.

“What?”

Salazar hesitated.

“Adrián didn’t take Leo randomly.”

Daniel stared.

“What do you mean?”

“He had a reason.”

“Which was?”

The detective placed a file on the table.

“When we searched the underground room, we found something.”

Daniel looked at the file.

“The box.”

Salazar nodded.

“The one with your name.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Why would he have a box with my name?”

“That’s what we’re trying to understand.”

The detective opened the file.

Inside were photos.

Old documents.

A flash drive.

And one letter.

Daniel picked up the letter.

The envelope was old.

The handwriting wasn’t familiar.

But the name was.

His.

Daniel Rivas.

He opened it.

The first line made his blood run cold.

Daniel, if you are reading this, it means the truth came out too late.

He stopped.

Salazar watched him.

“Who wrote it?”

Daniel kept reading.

The letter continued.

I tried to protect you. I tried to stop what was happening. But I failed.

Daniel frowned.

“What is this?”

The next sentence changed everything.

Leo was never the target. You were.

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

Salazar leaned forward.

His hands shook.

Adrián didn’t hate your son. He wanted to use him.

He knew you would never stop searching.

He knew you would destroy yourself trying to find Leo.

Because that was the point.

Daniel felt cold.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Someone had planned this.

Not an accident.

Not a moment of madness.

A plan.

The letter continued.

Years ago, before Leo was born, I discovered what Adrián was involved in.

Daniel froze.

Who was this person?

He was hiding money. Documents. Secrets.

Your sister Patricia knew more than she admitted.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

But the worst part was what they found.

He turned the page.

And the final sentence made him stop.

They found the evidence that could destroy powerful people.

Daniel looked at Salazar.

“What evidence?”

The detective was silent.

Because he didn’t know either.

That was the terrifying part.

Someone had hidden something.

Something worth kidnapping a child for.

Something worth destroying a family.

Later that afternoon, Daniel went back to Patricia’s house.

Not the same man who left it.

Not the desperate father breaking through the floor.

A different man.

A father who had answers to find.

Patricia was sitting in the living room.

The broken floor had been covered.

But the damage remained.

Not just in the wood.

In everyone.

When she saw him, she started crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel stood there.

“I need the truth.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“What did Adrián want?”

She looked away.

“I don’t know everything.”

“Patricia.”

She flinched.

“I swear.”

A pause.

“He talked about documents.”

“What documents?”

She shook her head.

“He never showed me.”

“Then why was my name on that box?”

That question destroyed her.

Because she knew.

Her face changed.

Daniel saw it.

“You know.”

“No.”

“You do.”

She looked down.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your father.”

Daniel froze.

“My father?”

She nodded.

“Years ago…”

Her voice trembled.

“He worked with Adrián.”

Daniel felt the world shift.

“My father died fifteen years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

Patricia looked at him.

“The secrets started before Leo disappeared.”

A pause.

“And your father left something behind.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Patricia swallowed.

“The reason Adrián came back.”

The room became silent.

Then she said:

“The reason Leo was taken…”

A pause.

“Was because Adrián believed your father hid the evidence with you.”

Daniel couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The hidden room.

The box.

The letter.

Leo.

This was never only about his son.

It was about something buried years ago.

Something his father left behind.

And someone was still willing to kill for it.

That night, Daniel returned home.

Leo was asleep in his room.

Finally.

His own bed.

His own blanket.

Safe.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Watching him.

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

A photo.

Daniel opened it.

His blood froze.

It was a picture of the old box.

The same box from beneath the floor.

And underneath the photo were six words:

YOU FOUND THE WRONG SECRET.

Daniel stared.

Then another message appeared.

ASK YOUR FATHER’S BEST FRIEND.

He didn’t know what that meant.

Until the next line appeared.

A name.

A name that made his entire body go cold.

Patricia’s husband wasn’t the mastermind.

May you like

Your father’s best friend was.
