PART 4 — THE SECRET ROOM BELOW

PART 4 — THE SECRET ROOM BELOW

Daniel didn’t remember the last time he moved that fast.

Not when Leo disappeared.

Not when the police told them there were no new leads.

Not when months passed and every morning began with the same horrible realization:

His son was still gone.

But now…

Leo was close.

Close enough to hear.

Close enough to touch.

And someone had taken him again.

“Daniel, wait!”

Mariana grabbed his arm.

But he pulled away.

“No.”

His voice was different.

Cold.

Focused.

“I’m not losing him twice.”

He grabbed the flashlight and climbed into the opening.

The broken floor dug into his knees.

The space below was darker than he expected.

The air smelled old.

Wet.

Like a place that hadn’t seen sunlight in years.

“Daniel…”

Mariana’s voice came from above.

“I’m coming with you.”

He looked up.

“No.”

“I’m his mother.”

The way she said it stopped him.

Not angry.

Not asking.

A fact.

Daniel nodded.

“Stay behind me.”

She climbed down.

Patricia stayed above.

Frozen.

Watching the two people she betrayed enter the darkness.

Watching them chase the child she had failed to protect.

The hidden room was bigger than anyone imagined.

It wasn’t just a storage area.

It was a network.

A narrow hallway extended beneath the house.

Old pipes ran along the ceiling.

Dust covered everything.

There were old boxes.

Blankets.

Food containers.

A small mattress in the corner.

Daniel stopped.

His flashlight moved across the room.

And his stomach turned.

Someone had been living here.

Not hiding.

Living.

Mariana covered her mouth.

“Oh my God…”

Daniel picked up a small toy.

A red car.

Leo’s red car.

The same one they found near the lemon tree.

The one they thought was left behind.

But it wasn’t.

Someone had brought it here.

Daniel closed his hand around it.

“Leo was here the whole time.”

Mariana started crying.

Not loudly.

The kind of crying that came from a place too deep for sound.

“He was alive.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And we’re getting him back.”

A noise came from deeper inside.

Both froze.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Daniel turned off the flashlight.

Darkness surrounded them.

Mariana grabbed his hand.

Then a voice whispered:

“Dad?”

Daniel’s heart nearly stopped.

“Leo?”

The voice came again.

“We have to be quiet.”

Daniel moved toward the sound.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then he saw him.

Leo was behind a metal door.

Small fingers wrapped around the bars.

His face dirty.

His eyes exhausted.

But alive.

Daniel almost broke.

“Leo.”

He rushed forward.

His son reached through the bars.

“Dad!”

Daniel grabbed his hands.

“I’m here.”

“I knew you’d come.”

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because Leo never stopped believing.

Even when everyone else did.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I’m so sorry.”

Leo shook his head.

“You came.”

That was all he needed.

The door was locked.

Daniel examined it.

Old.

But strong.

“Where is he?”

Leo looked behind him.

Fear returned to his face.

“He went to get the key.”

“Who?”

Leo whispered:

“Uncle Adrián.”

Mariana closed her eyes.

“Where did he go?”

Leo pointed deeper into the hallway.

“He said if I told anyone…”

He swallowed.

“He said he would make Mom disappear too.”

Daniel felt rage rise.

But he pushed it down.

Not now.

Not until Leo was safe.

“Stay with me, buddy.”

“I can’t.”

Leo looked down.

“I’m stuck.”

Daniel noticed.

A chain around the door.

Not connected to Leo.

But locking the mechanism.

He looked closer.

The chain was old.

Rusty.

Maybe weak.

He pulled.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Mariana handed him something.

A metal bar.

“Try this.”

Together, they worked.

Every second felt like an hour.

Because Adrián could return anytime.

Finally…

The chain snapped.

The door opened.

Leo ran into Daniel’s arms.

And Daniel held him.

Really held him.

Ten months of fear.

Ten months of nightmares.

Ten months of wondering if he would ever feel this again.

His son was in his arms.

Then a voice echoed.

“Touching.”

Everyone froze.

Adrián stood at the end of the hallway.

The key in his hand.

The knife still there.

But now Daniel noticed something.

Adrián wasn’t looking at Leo.

He was looking at Patricia.

Who had followed them down.

“Why did you come?”

Patricia stepped forward.

“I need to fix this.”

Adrián laughed.

“You?”

“You ruined everything.”

Mariana looked at her sister.

“What is he talking about?”

Patricia’s face collapsed.

And this time…

She didn’t run from the truth.

“I made a mistake.”

Daniel held Leo tighter.

“What mistake?”

Patricia looked at Mariana.

“I saw Adrián here the day Leo disappeared.”

Silence.

“I came to check on the house.”

She swallowed.

“I heard something.”

Mariana stared.

“You heard Leo?”

Patricia nodded.

“I heard him crying.”

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“And?”

Patricia cried.

“I opened the door.”

A pause.

“And Adrián was there.”

Everyone was silent.

“He told me Leo had fallen.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“He lied.”

“Yes.”

Patricia closed her eyes.

“I knew.”

The words were devastating.

Mariana stepped back.

“You knew my son was alive?”

“I was scared.”

“You knew?”

Patricia broke down.

“I was scared of him!”

Daniel looked at her.

“And you left my child here.”

Patricia had no answer.

Because there was none.

No explanation.

No excuse.

Adrián smiled.

“Finally.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The truth.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You manipulated her.”

Adrián shrugged.

“She was easy to control.”

Patricia cried.

“I thought he would let Leo go.”

Adrián laughed.

“You believed me?”

His smile disappeared.

“You really are pathetic.”

That was the moment something changed.

Patricia stopped crying.

She looked at him.

Not with fear.

With realization.

“You were never going to let him go.”

“No.”

“And you were going to blame me.”

Adrián didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Daniel saw the opening.

He moved.

Fast.

Adrián raised the knife.

But Daniel wasn’t alone.

Mariana pushed Leo behind her.

Patricia grabbed the metal bar from the floor.

And for the first time…

Everyone turned against Adrián.

Not as victims.

As survivors.

The struggle was chaos.

A scream.

A crash.

The knife fell.

The hallway shook.

And then…

A loud sound came from above.

The police.

Someone had called them.

Daniel never knew who.

Later, he would find out.

Patricia.

Before following them underground.

She had sent the location.

Adrián was arrested.

The truth came out.

The hidden room.

The lies.

The months of silence.

Everything.

But the hardest part was still ahead.

Because Leo was safe.

But Daniel knew one thing.

Some wounds don’t disappear just because the person causing them is caught.

And the biggest question remained:

Why did Adrián take Leo?

What was the secret that made him risk everything?

Because the police found something in that underground room.

Something hidden behind the last wall.

A locked box.

May you like

With Daniel’s name written on it.
