PART 10 — THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS

PART 10 — THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS
Daniel stared at the photo.
Again.
And again.
His fingers went cold around the phone.
The man in the picture wasn’t a stranger.
Not completely.
There was something familiar.
The shape of his eyes.
The expression.
The tired sadness on his face.
It was impossible.
But somehow…
Daniel recognized him.
Not from memory.
Not from meeting him.
From blood.
From the parts of himself he had never understood.
His brother.
Samuel.
Alive.
“Daniel?”
Mariana’s voice pulled him back.
She stepped closer.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at her.
For a moment, he couldn’t speak.
Because how do you explain that your family just became bigger and more broken at the same time?
How do you say:
The brother I never knew existed wants to meet me.
After everything.
After Leo.
After the lies.
After all the pain.
Finally, he showed her the phone.
Mariana read the message.
Her face changed.
“Samuel?”
Daniel nodded.
She sat down slowly.
“Your father’s son.”
Another nod.
A long silence.
Then she whispered:
“Is he dangerous?”
That was the question.
The one everyone would ask.
The one Daniel asked himself.
“I don’t know.”
The next morning, Daniel received another message.
No picture this time.
Only an address.
A small café outside the city.
And one sentence.
Come alone.
Daniel stared at it.
He knew better than to walk into unknown situations.
He had learned.
But this wasn’t a stranger.
This was family.
Or maybe…
That was exactly why it was dangerous.
“I’m coming with you.”
Daniel looked up.
Mariana stood in the doorway.
“No.”
She crossed her arms.
“You’re not doing this alone.”
“Mariana.”
“No.”
Her voice softened.
“But I almost lost you too.”
That stopped him.
Because she was right.
The past ten months had changed everything.
They were no longer the same people who searched for Leo.
They had survived something.
Together.
Daniel nodded.
“Okay.”
A pause.
“But we stay careful.”
The café was almost empty.
Morning light came through the windows.
Normal.
Too normal.
Daniel hated how many times he had thought that lately.
Everything looked normal right before something terrible happened.
Then he saw him.
The man from the photo.
Samuel.
He was sitting alone.
No weapon.
No disguise.
Just a man waiting.
When Daniel approached, Samuel stood.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Because what do brothers say when they meet for the first time?
“Hello.”
“Nice to meet you.”
Those words felt ridiculous.
Finally, Samuel said:
“You look like him.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Samuel looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
The apology surprised him.
“Why?”
“Because you spent your whole life carrying his name.”
A pause.
“And I spent mine carrying his absence.”
Daniel didn’t know what to say.
Because there was pain on both sides.
They sat down.
Samuel looked older than his age.
Not because of years.
Because of what he had lived.
“My father told me Robert abandoned me.”
Daniel listened.
“But later, I found out he was lying.”
Samuel looked at the table.
“He didn’t leave me.”
A pause.
“He was trying to protect me.”
Daniel remembered Patricia saying the same thing.
“From who?”
Samuel looked up.
“From people who wanted access to Sterling.”
“The company?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Something bigger.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Samuel reached into his jacket.
He placed a small object on the table.
An old key.
Daniel recognized it.
Not exactly.
But enough.
A key similar to the one found in the underground room.
“What is that?”
“My father gave it to me.”
Daniel froze.
“Your father?”
Samuel nodded.
“Robert.”
Silence.
“My whole life, I thought he forgot me.”
A pause.
“Then when I was older, he found me.”
Daniel stared.
“When?”
“Five years before he died.”
That changed everything.
“Why didn’t anyone know?”
Samuel smiled sadly.
“Because your father was still afraid.”
“Of what?”
Samuel looked directly at him.
“Of the people who killed him.”
The café suddenly felt smaller.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You know who killed him?”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Samuel hesitated.
Then:
“Someone inside Sterling.”
Daniel’s heart sank.
“Who?”
Samuel looked away.
“I don’t know the full name.”
“But?”
“But my father left evidence.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Where?”
Samuel looked at him.
“The same place where he hid everything.”
A pause.
“Under the old family house.”
Daniel froze.
The underground room.
The box.
The hidden spaces.
It all connected.
“He knew.”
Samuel nodded.
“He knew someone would come looking.”
Daniel felt anger rise.
“You could have helped us.”
Samuel accepted the accusation.
“Yes.”
“Leo suffered because of this.”
“I know.”
“You watched?”
Samuel looked down.
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I didn’t know.”
A pause.
“I found out too late.”
Daniel studied him.
The pain looked real.
But he had learned something.
People could look broken and still hide things.
“What are you not telling me?”
Samuel looked at him.
For a long time.
Then he said:
“The man who kidnapped Leo…”
A pause.
“He wasn’t working alone.”
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“Who else?”
Samuel didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked outside.
Toward the street.
And whispered:
“We need to leave.”
Daniel turned.
“Why?”
Samuel’s face changed.
Because he saw something.
Someone.
A black car parked across the street.
Someone watching.
Samuel stood quickly.
“Now.”
They left through the back exit.
Mariana followed.
Daniel’s heart raced.
“Who is it?”
Samuel didn’t slow down.
“The person who has been cleaning up the evidence.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You said Victor was involved.”
Samuel nodded.
“Victor was only a piece.”
“A piece of what?”
Samuel stopped.
Then looked at him.
“The organization my father discovered.”
Daniel felt cold.
“What organization?”
Samuel’s voice dropped.
“The people who control companies.”
“The people who control politicians.”
“The people who make problems disappear.”
A pause.
“And they’re not finished.”
They reached the car.
Daniel opened the door.
Then froze.
Because on the windshield…
Was an envelope.
No name.
No message.
Just waiting.
Samuel immediately stepped back.
“Don’t touch it.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
Samuel whispered:
“Because that’s how they start.”
A pause.
“They want you to know they can reach you.”
The envelope moved slightly in the wind.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A symbol.
Printed on the paper.
A symbol he had seen before.
On the old documents.
On the hidden files.
The same symbol his father spent his life trying to expose.
Daniel looked at Samuel.
“What does it mean?”
Samuel’s face went pale.
“It means…”
A pause.
“They know you found me.”
Daniel stared at the envelope.
And for the first time…
He understood.
Finding Leo was only the beginning.
Because the person who started this nightmare…
Was still out there.
And now…
May you like
They were coming for everyone Daniel loved.
