PART 9 — THE BROTHER I NEVER KNEW EXISTED

PART 9 — THE BROTHER I NEVER KNEW EXISTED
For several seconds, Daniel couldn’t understand the words.
Not because they were complicated.
Because they were impossible.
His father.
Another child.
Another life.
Another secret.
Everything Daniel believed about his family had just cracked open.
Again.
“No.”
The word came out quietly.
Almost like a child refusing to accept a nightmare.
The man behind Patricia smiled.
“That’s what your father wanted everyone to say.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?”
A pause.
“Ask Patricia.”
Every eye turned.
Toward her.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because Patricia looked away.
She couldn’t deny it.
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“Patricia.”
Her face collapsed.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.”
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
The answer destroyed the room.
Mariana covered her mouth.
Salazar looked shocked.
Even the man holding the gun seemed satisfied.
“Yes?”
Daniel’s voice was barely recognizable.
“You knew?”
Patricia cried.
“I found out years ago.”
“How many?”
“Before Leo was born.”
Daniel stepped back.
His mind was racing.
All the memories.
All the conversations.
Every family gathering.
Every holiday.
Every moment his father acted distant.
Was he hiding this?
“Who was he?”
Daniel asked.
Patricia looked at him.
“He.”
A pause.
“Your brother.”
The word felt strange.
Brother.
Daniel had never said it.
Never thought it.
He had grown up believing he was an only child.
“You have a name.”
Patricia nodded.
“Samuel.”
Daniel repeated it silently.
Samuel.
A stranger.
A brother.
Someone who existed his entire life.
Someone his father hid.
“Where is he?”
Patricia’s silence answered.
Daniel looked at the man holding the gun.
The man smiled.
“Now you understand.”
“Understand what?”
“That everything started because Robert Sterling abandoned someone.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“You expect me to believe my father deserved this?”
The man tilted his head.
“Did I say that?”
A pause.
“No.”
“I said your father created this.”
The man stepped closer.
“My father was one of Robert Sterling’s employees.”
Daniel froze.
Another connection.
“Your father ruined him.”
“How?”
The man laughed.
“He exposed his mistakes.”
Daniel frowned.
“What mistakes?”
“Your father wasn’t perfect.”
Again.
The same words.
The same excuse.
But now Daniel listened differently.
Because maybe the truth wasn’t one-sided.
Maybe everyone had pieces.
“My father lost everything because of Robert.”
The man’s eyes darkened.
“He lost his home.”
“He lost his reputation.”
“He lost his family.”
A pause.
“And my father died believing Robert Sterling destroyed him.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Who was your father?”
The man smiled.
“Someone your father forgot.”
A pause.
“But I didn’t.”
Suddenly, Salazar moved.
Fast.
He knocked the gun aside.
The warehouse exploded into chaos.
A gunshot.
A scream.
A crash.
Daniel grabbed Patricia and pulled her away.
Mariana shouted.
“Daniel!”
They moved behind a stack of crates.
The man fought with Salazar.
The gun slid across the floor.
For one second…
Everyone saw it.
A chance.
Daniel ran.
But the man reached it first.
He pointed it.
Not at Daniel.
At Patricia.
“Stop.”
Everyone froze.
Patricia looked at him.
“You won’t do this.”
The man laughed.
“You still think you know me.”
Then he looked at Daniel.
“You want the truth?”
Daniel stared.
“Yes.”
The man lowered the gun slightly.
“Your father didn’t abandon Samuel.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
The man continued.
“Your father tried to save him.”
Silence.
A complete reversal.
“He found out Samuel was being manipulated.”
Daniel frowned.
“By who?”
The man smiled.
“By the same person who has been moving pieces all these years.”
A pause.
“Me.”
Everyone froze.
The man laughed.
“Do you really think I spent years destroying your family because of revenge?”
Daniel stared.
“Then why?”
The man’s expression changed.
For the first time…
He looked almost human.
“I wanted the truth.”
A pause.
“The same truth your father buried.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re insane.”
“Maybe.”
A pause.
“But I was patient.”
He looked at Patricia.
“She knew.”
Then Daniel.
“Your father knew.”
Then Salazar.
“Everyone lied.”
The man’s voice became louder.
“Because powerful people always protect themselves.”
Daniel looked at Patricia.
“Tell me everything.”
She closed her eyes.
And finally…
She stopped hiding.
“Samuel was your father’s first son.”
Daniel listened.
“He was born before your mother.”
A pause.
“Your father loved him.”
Daniel felt confused.
“Then why hide him?”
Patricia cried.
“Because Samuel was sick.”
Silence.
“And your grandfather believed he was a weakness.”
Daniel’s face changed.
The old Sterling family.
The pressure.
The image.
The reputation.
Everything mattered more than people.
“Your father tried to fight him.”
Patricia continued.
“But he lost.”
Daniel looked down.
“So he abandoned him?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“He hid him.”
“Why?”
“Because someone was trying to use Samuel against him.”
Daniel looked at the man.
“And you?”
The man smiled.
“My father was that someone.”
A pause.
“Samuel was the key.”
Daniel finally understood.
Not everything.
But enough.
This wasn’t just revenge.
It was a war that started before he was born.
A war between people who wanted power.
And people who wanted the truth.
Then Daniel noticed something.
The man wasn’t watching them anymore.
He was looking at a door behind him.
A hidden exit.
Waiting.
Planning.
Daniel whispered:
“Salazar.”
The detective looked.
He understood.
They were both thinking the same thing.
Distract him.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You still don’t have what you want.”
The man looked back.
“What?”
“The evidence.”
A pause.
“You came for it.”
The man smiled.
“You finally understand.”
Daniel nodded.
“But you’re wrong.”
The smile disappeared.
“About what?”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“My father didn’t hide it from you.”
A pause.
“He hid it from someone like you.”
The man’s face changed.
Just enough.
Daniel saw it.
The doubt.
The weakness.
And that was enough.
Salazar moved.
This time, he was faster.
The gun fell.
The man hit the floor.
The warehouse went silent.
Hours later, after arrests and statements and endless questions…
Daniel stood outside the hospital.
Patricia was being treated.
Leo was sleeping beside Mariana.
Safe.
Again.
But Daniel knew this wasn’t the end.
Because the evidence had not been found.
And one question remained.
Where was Samuel?
The brother he never knew existed.
The person everything started with.
Then his phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
A photo.
A man standing in the rain.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
Underneath:
I’m sorry you had to find out this way.
My name is Samuel.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Then another message appeared.
May you like
And I need your help.
